Less but higher quality content = more interest and money.
The NRL missed the opportunity to lever off the value of origin to TV to reduce rounds and compensate clubs accordingly. We keep hearing what a massive event Origin is yet in the TV deal what was its value? Our content still got less than AFL even with origin. If origin is worth say $75million a year then reduce rounds by 4 and share that $75mill out to the clubs, they are probably doing it anyway with increased grants but missed the opportunity to call it compensation and change the structure.
And for want of sounding like a stuck record expanding the comp can increase content whilst still allowing for reduction in rounds.
I agree. The NRL and ARL has shown no ability or vision to fix issues from grassroots, to scheduling, crowds and footprint. You could say the administrarion has in the past deceived expansion bids with public statements which have mislead them to beleive it was happening within a certain time followed by long periods of silence and further contradictary comments.
There is no strategy to boost crowds and seemingly they are not aorth comment from the executive unless its the finacial report when they spin everything they dan to paint a positive picture.
Honestly its no wonder people walk away from the game as the games leadership make that an easy decision at times.
They need to suspend the NRL for the month of June and call that Origin month.
They should play a nines tournament throughout the month with teams from Perth and Wellington included to satisfy the television networks.
Boring! Some of us couldn't care less about some mickie mouse exhibition games. I'd rather watch Brisbane at half strength. Would rather see the youngsters coming through. One game a week that is interesting does not tell me that this idea is good. We have tried stand alone Origins before, they don't work!

And here is why RL will never be a major sport. Hopefully "fans" like you are diminishing and more and more see test matches as the pinnacle of our game as most other sports do.
Australia vs NZ/Eng might be. The others meh. We are in Australia, guess what most people care about Australian matches, not some exhibition test match just to fill in a weekend. It won't work. Stand alone Origin has been tried before, fans hate it, it is boring by the 2nd week. Stopping a competition for a month is even worse- talk about a free kick to other sports. Hate to be blunt but I'd lose interest by the end of the first weekend, as it is we have that International round and that is bad enough personally.
Thanks for your input phil rothfield. As per usual, you're wrong. Please explain this "Free kick to other sports" bullsh*t theory that the media (daily telegraph) like to use?
Other sports in the middle of their seasons...and you want to stop our season for a month! How about NO thanks. We have tests at the end of the year and an International round. That is MORE than enough.
Do I completely love the current way, NO. Is it the best of the worst solutions, YES. We don't need our season stopped every year.
So when you're giving a "free kick" to other sports, what happens exactly? Are you gonna become an AFL fan in 3 weeks? Or suck it up and stop being a bitch, and watch Origin, NZ v Eng, and Pacific nations belt the shit out of each other.
Does this free kick thing apply in the offseason? Should the NRL run year round to avoid giving a free kick to Soccer and Cricket?
Here's a free kick for ya. Our inward focussed bullshit gives a free kick to other sports, especially International Rugby. While we sit here stomping down internationals so we can watch an extra round of Parra vs Souffs, fans turn to the Wallabies playing England in front of a packed out crowd. Players look over to France and look at the pay packet they can get from a game boosted by the huge popularity of its superior international scene. And sponsors and media jump on board too.
Playing depleted NRL rounds gets clubs a few thousand $$ in gate (if they arent losing money on shit crowds) while costing us players, fans, positive media, international sponsors, and respect.
We could match Union internationally in 15 years if anyone in charge had the balls to. We could have players looking at sponsorship and travel opportunities not just to the North of England and Auckland, but France Italy Canada USA Spain Jamaica Fiji Lebanon Philippines.
The status quo isn't broken (if we want to continue as is) but it isn't getting us anywhere or growing the game either.
