The game was very entertaining the experience not so. For the cost of getting to a game it needs to be both to attract more than just the die hards.

Re the races, no not at my local amateur races that are free to get in, but absolutely they create a great sports experience at Grand Prix and v8's which are professional events that are Expensive to attend.

At the end of the day fans are not going to games in any great numbers and my experience last night showed me why.
Do you actually have any suggestions to improve this? You're good at telling us what's not working but short on solutions.

The Raiders should be allocated home week night games in the first 8 weeks of the season & that's that ...

No other teams supporters are asked to attend games in the frigid conditions of last night because they only exist in Canberra.

We have another one to come against the Storm in a few weeks , this one played on a Sunday afternoon would of attracted 20,000.
Instead half that many will be at GIO.
It's ridiculous.

I am pretty sure that NZ has cold weather as well and winter nights in Melbourne aren't exactly toasty..

Canberra is cold in winter, we get it, but the schedule isn't changing.

Heaps, I can think of a dozen things they could have done that wouldn't cost more than $50k a game but make it feel like you are going to an event above park footy. If I can with no industry knowledge then why can't they? It smacks of clubs not giving much of a toss about getting fans through the gate and just accepting the easy tv money rather than work hard to get both. Maybe it is a culture developed in the easy pokie money that funded rugby league in this country?

The night was a reflection of our game forever, great game on the pitch, lousy off field effort. I hope I live long enough to one day see the game get the management to match with the quality of the players

Gio lends itself well to doing some fun stuff for fans on the concourse that runs around it.

8,000 people @ average $25/head = $200,000

Minus costs of running the game, let's say conservatively $120,000 profit.

You want to spend $50,000 on what, a band? A dance troup? A DJ?

Would the crowd have increased to >10,000 based on the band being there, in order for the club to break even?

They need to have Origin through June and suspend the NRL season and play a nines or tens comp - each team can play 3 games a week (double headers or even all teams playing at one venue on a weekend). This will satisfy the hell out of Fox and Nine.
Then reduce the NRL season by 5 games. There are too many games in the NRL season (26?) and the games are devalued through Origin period with people focused on that series and key players unavailable.
Nines comp.

Not about a band ffs. about creating an event. Yes it should be entirely possible for Canberra, or anyone else, to get 15-20k to a game. mediocriy is what is making our game stagnant. At least we are good at that! We now just shrug our shoulders at less than 10k people at a game and say what can you expect?

NRL signalled its intention to frick fans off when they signed a deal that screwed real fans.

Ps NRL is giving clubs $1.5 mill extra a year, they could have insisted $600k of that went to creating an amazing game experience to get fans to games, but hey ho I've learnt to not be dissapointed at with RL and its inept management.

To recoup $50k they would only need to get an extra 2000 people at the game. That shouldn't be fricking hard for a sport that considers itself number 1 in It's market.

It's ridiculous.

Green Bay Packers have sold out every game since 1959. Current capacity of the stadium is 81,000-82,000. The NFC Championship game in 2008 was -32c with wind chill. The coldest game on record there was -38c with wind chill.

The issue here is the fair weather nature of Rugby League fans be it rain in Sydney or cold in Canberra.

It's fine to use weather as an excuse (I do it in extreme examples) but understand that relatively speaking, you have it pretty good.

You haven't addressed the figures that Saint Doc gave you. And they were generous figures.

Nor have you made any suggestions on improving things like Timmah said.

I'm just not sure whether 50K in entertainment would result in a substantial increase in crowd on a Monday night in Canberra?

What type of entertainment are you suggesting?

I go to the football, surprisingly, to watch football.

I get there at kick off, talk to friends at halt time, and leave at the siren.

I don't need people jumping up and down with their backs turned away from the action shooting off flares to enjoy a game.
