2017 Crowd Watch

I feel this is definitely what has happened. People in Sydney are disengaged a lot more from sports in general for a lot of reasons. The Nrl really needs to make a push with help from clubs/media and the current fan base. Reciprocal rights for all club members should be standard or at least free if I have a paying friend. Meaning a sharks supporter would get free GA to a Brisbane v sharks game at suncorp. It would allow a full paying club member potential access to 24 games. This incentive would obviously help the Sydney clubs a lot more than any other clubs. If it was a free entry if you have a ga paying friend it helps grow the crowd. Something out of the norm has to happen. The Sydney clubs spend a lot of time together in meetings, why can't they come up with a way to increase crowds. It helps there bottom line after all.
It's so much easier to attend sporting events in Melbourne and Brisbane too, IMO. Suncorp's nice and easy to get to up there, it's well placed and an atmosphere is noticeable on Caxton St. The G & AAMI Park are right across from one another and Etihad is directly adjacent to the western end of the city - all easy enough to access from major public transport hubs.

By comparison Allianz remains a bus or uphill walk from central (til the light rail's finished), and ANZ is 12km or so from the CBD and serviced by an intermittent rail line.

I hope the light rail to Moore Park is a success and furthermore that more clubs play matches at Allianz because it makes sense (particularly Souths as @adamkungl has said).

Yes Sydney transport is a issue but not souly to blame. If a nrl club fan lives on the other side of the city they are highly unlikely to go to many games or no games at all. The benefit that the current Sydney nrl teams have is they play out of many stadiums all over Sydney. So if a cronulla fan living in north Sydney, can go to a manly game, why not. Same as a cronulla fan going to a broncs game.

If Clubs especially Sydney clubs know what fans want why aren't they doing anything about the issue? Sydney clubs need to combine there forces and put a plan in place to help improve Sydney crowds. Yes transport needs fixing and that's probably more a nrl influenced issue but why there can't be a club committee? Combine average Sydney crowds by the stadium deals for each club and divide it amongst the 9 Sydney clubs. Any increase in crowds will directly increase income to the clubs and memberships. Clubs will never agree to this due to self interest but long term this would be incredibly beneficial. Reciprocal rights are a must in my opinion.

Don't be stupid, Souths have already relocated mate.

Homebush/Perth/Cairns Rabbitohs

I thought they'd just settled on the Diaspora Rabbitohs.

Kids in America have Souths posters on their walls right next to their limited edition Russell Crowe Gladiator posters don't ya know.

Why are people bagging the giants crowd, you look at some photos of the stands that are blindsided to the camera and they're pretty full
Because the stadium holds 26000 people and it is very obvious that 1 in every 2 seats isn't occupied especially given the fact that entire grandstands are not even open.

It is the same every single time they play there. Compare their posted crowds to similar announced crowds at wanderers and thunder games and it is clear they are lying. Nobody in the media pulls them up on it!

Part of the problem I see is that it is popular in country nsw but tbh the figures for Sydney are pretty poor when you look at tv audiences, attendances, memberships etc. is it really that popular in Sydney, a city of over 5 million when two Sydney teams are lucky to get 12k attending?

Yes it really is that popular.

Head to any pub on an origin night in Sydney and it's packed to the rafters not to mention the sold out crowd.

We need to get these pub people to more games, that's the issue

The ends at ANZ should have retractable seats so that on game days not semis, GFs, SoO...they're set up as beer garden type things where people can hang out and socialise and what not.

For what it's worth, can anyone explain how a light rail to the SFS is better than a bus to the SFS?

I think it is the positioning of where it is and where you can get on/off. At the moment you must go to central first, when the light rail opens, it won't matter where you are in the CBD

At the moment I go for a beer near central before the game which, let's be honest, is the crap end of town. After the light rail completion I can go anywhere in the city including darling harbour and circular quay and leave 20 minutes before the game starts and can be confident I will be on time. That means that if I am at work I don't have to trek to central to get to the game, it just feels more convenient. Additionally, It opens up the whole 'going to the footy is a social event including dinner/lunch/drinks" to areas in or near the CBD beyond the EQ and Surry Hills.

I take your point that it is still an added leg of travel but I think (am hopeful) it will make the word of difference to all events at the EQ. Also, for whatever reason, people seem to prefer rail/light rail to buses

There are bus routes from Circular Quay/Elizabeth St/Oxford St that go down Anzac Pde like every 2 minutes.

I have a lot of doubts over the light rail project, one of which is having any effect whatsoever on Moore park crowds.

Wouldn't light rail have a far great capacity than a bus?

According to the NSW govt system capacity on the line past the SCG/Allianz precinct is 6750 / hr in each direction. One tram every 8 minutes, 7am - 7pm. More for events. So maybe 10,000 an hr for events

Each tram can carry 450 people. (Supposedly this is 9 buses worth)

A fully loaded heavy train can take 1000 people. 900 seated.

and quite often these buses coming from Circular Quay and Elizabeth St then along Oxford st get caught up in traffic especially on Friday nights where as the light rail has a free run with no traffic to stop it [ unless there is a car crash which blocks the tracks].

Listen to all you muppets hypothesizing weird and wonderful ways to get the crowds back. It's a simple, two-pronged approach.

1. BRING BACK THE BIFF - Let these gladiators belt each other to kingdom come. Let them bash and brawl, we all love it!

2. CHEERLEADERS - What straight man alive doesn't love scantily clad song and dance?

Fighting and bare bodies are our two most innate human passions. Combine then, along with beer and footy, you'll have 30k each week.
