2017 Crowd Watch

If Thursday nights are for the cash, why not have Thursday nights up to Origin. Then during the origin period it is only Friday, Saturday and Sunday games. Once Origin is complete, Thursday night can return for the remainder of the home and away season.

So for 2016. We have Thursday night up to and including round 11. Then Resumes round 20 till round 26. Making 18 Thursday night matches.

Every team bar the Warriors has a Thursday night home game. So there is 15 games. Only need 3 more. Give the Broncos a 2nd Thursday night. Only need two more.

So many options.

I would have had Canberra kicking off the season against the Sharks on a Thursday. Get their game done early in the Season. Or Even round 2.

A Thursday night in Melbourne, before the AFL season or when no AFL games are on.

Try a Thursday in Wollongong.

Brisbane, Townsville and Gold Coast games later on the season when the weather is beauitful in Qld and cold down south.

Easter Thursday game.

Games in areas when school holidays are on.

So many options.....

Broncos 2nd, other codes playing abd no excuses for broncos to get 40k plus. Self proclaim league capital should live up to its own hype by selling out suncorp on the regular. One team, top of the ladder, 'league capital' no excuses cue excuses.

Broncos folk might be saving up for a home semi sell out

Still reckon high 30s for tomorrow's game though

Embarrassing. Thursday nights are shit house but they aren't solely responsible for crowds that bad. If warning bells aren't going off at NRL HQ right now then I don't know what will get them to wake up.

The NRL only care about TV

This game should have been the Darwin game, hopefully next year it will go to a regional city......but to be honest, the NRLs obsession with Homebush and TV is always going to result in this. Thursday and early Friday is never about getting crowds - but stadiums with more staff at the game than spectators says it all.

We will still have dreaded Thursday nights.

the NRL selects 65 premium content games for 9 next year , & 18 or what ever of these 9 will put on Thursdays

the 65 games are the NRLs choice though , the NRL has an opportunity to send a very clear message to 9 , by selecting a lot of games where the term .. premium .. is a loose interpretation at best
theres nothing to lose doing this , but plenty to gain least of all better games are scheduled in better time slots. The NRL can let 9 know this is what you'll get for the 4 years after too or you can approach us & tell us you'll swap Thursdays for Saturday night if you give us better quality games. put pressure on 9.

the NRL can do the same to Foxtel , utter tripe for 6pm Fridays because we won't waste good games on that time slot , or you can switch 6pm Fridays to another weekend time slot for far better games for the rest of the deal.

anyone who doesn't think the NRL having far greater control over the schedule next year is a big thing , is kidding themselves
of course it is , its huge.

next week is a prime example of ch 9 & their scant regard for anyone but themselves

Im not sure when it was made public Sam Thiaday would not be at the Broncos in 2018 & therefore next weeks game against Parramatta would be his last at home

but that game should be on a Sunday afternoon being played at 4pm ( so its still on 9) in front of 45 to 50,000 people & thats how many would turn up to say bye to Sam
but instead its on a Thursday night at 8pm

a Sunday arvo game in front of a near capacity crowd at Suncorp is the look the game needs & thats a game I would watch on TV
not a half full venue which gives the impression , no one cares , so why should I , & I won't watch it on TV

Ratings for 9 are way down in 2017 , this is partially the reason why

But Big Reddy doesn't like improvements to suburban grounds even when 15k looks great and it's better for the fans (usually closer/more convenient ) Crowds have been the same for ........40 years
Dispute that Wombat

Average crowds in 1977 (40 years ago) were 8980. Just saying.

If the NRL only cares about ratings they should still be worried. Ratings are down as well, massively so on FTA.

these thursday and some of the sydney-market friday night matches seriously look like curtain rasiers rather than a main prime time game. it's an absolutely dreadful look.

and of course, the officiating, constant referrals to the bunker which really take the air out of try celebrations, and the negativity from Phil Gould in particular just doesn't sell the game any more. if guys like him who work in the game are always criticising it, then how do you expect the general viewer to enjoy it?

You'll have your die hards, but all the above collectively is doing nothing to pull in and maintain the general viewer who may have an interest in sport. my missus prefers the AFL and I reckon it's only because their prime time matches seem more like an event.

a crowd and atmosphere projecting through the TV is part of the experience. the NRL now seriously resemble those NT Thunder NEAFL matches that NITV broadcast every week. this is supposed to be the best rugby league comp in the world!

i thought sam still had a year to run on his current contract?

but i agree with the general premise. the NRL need to piss off thursday night matches completely and return to a fri-sat-sun schedule next season. the excitement of looking forward to games just isn't there anymore.

something also needs to be done about scheduling less matches at the olympic stadium. would transferring matches to the showground be an option? i know it's not ideal in terms of the distance from the stands to the sidelines, but surely it's got to be better than the cavernous atmosphere of the big house next door.

souths also have to go back to SFS.

Fully behind the whole fact we have an issue with scheduling and Thursday, Titans impacted last night but surely an in-form Eels have more than <7k fans able to rock up for a home game regardless of when it's played?

On a Thursday night at that dump they call ANZ? I'm amazed they got 7k! Awful ground, should have been played elsewhere.

I believe there are more ticketed members than the total posted last night, so,at last some realistic numbers ( ie not counting the STH who don't turn up)

I was there, so few children attending, I had a reasonable exit from the car park and still didn't get home until close to 11 pm. How the heck is that good for families to attend when there is school next day

Another example of the wonderful insight of the CEO, those programming decisions coupled with allowing ex Bulldog Patten in the bunker is up to its is usual standard ( the bunker despite its state of the art technical advantages is staffed by idiots)

Complacency and Thursday night. I don't blame them

Put the game on a Saturday and it probably doubles
