2017 Crowd Watch

The NRL only care about TV

This game should have been the Darwin game, hopefully next year it will go to a regional city......but to be honest, the NRLs obsession with Homebush and TV is always going to result in this. Thursday and early Friday is never about getting crowds - but stadiums with more staff at the game than spectators says it all.
Totally agree, this should've been a regional game but when ANZ is throwing Parra $100k guarenteed to play at the ground, you understand why they took the easy option.

Just another example of cromedome 1 and cromedome 2 exercising their failed administration skills

Like I said before you have to understand the NRLHQs conflict of interest in all this. If they had done what we all want they would have likely got X$ less in the TV contract. 1. That looks bad for them when the TV deal is announced 2. That gives them less central funding to spend.
under 7k turning out on a Thursday night really doesn't matter too much them in the short term from a business point of view, of course longer term it is going to potentially mean massive things for the game as less and less people follow it.

Where the real impact is lies on the clubs ability to generate revenue, but they are so short sighted all they can see the is the massively increased central grant about to come there way for not doing anything.

Those that go to games most likely watch footy on fox as it is, or free to air. So the TV contract doesn't really differ for lesser crowds at games.

The crowds will continue to fall and this will probably boost TV ratings further as those at the game tune in, therefore pushing the next TV deal higher.

Honestly, with clubs being funded 130% of the cap to ensure they can run their admin as well as pay players, clubs should slash ticket prices to games to encourage bug crowds to turn up.

next week is a prime example of ch 9 & their scant regard for anyone but themselves

Im not sure when it was made public Sam Thiaday would not be at the Broncos in 2018 & therefore next weeks game against Parramatta would be his last at home

but that game should be on a Sunday afternoon being played at 4pm ( so its still on 9) in front of 45 to 50,000 people & thats how many would turn up to say bye to Sam
but instead its on a Thursday night at 8pm

Why do so many people think this is the case with Thaiday's contract? The Broncos said they weren't going to extend him beyond 2018 (when his contract runs out). He's still contracted for next year. It was the most non-newsworthy contract story of the whole lot (and that's quite an achievement) and it seems to have confused a lot of people.

As for Thursday games, I would love someone to explain to me why they kickoff at 750? (And that's assuming it actually would kick-off at 750, it seems to be a lot closer to 8 by the time the game starts, if not after 8).

The 20 minute pre-game show is absolutely tedium at it's finest, I simply refuse to believe anyone tunes in for that other than those who just turn the TV on because kick-off times vary so much and they don't want to miss the start.

And don't give me the crap about not wanting to ruin A Current Affair or whatever is on before it. Kick the game off at 732 if you must, it won't impact any other shows and the game will finish at an hour that is socially reasonable for a Thursday.

It's really that simple.

Except tv audiences overall are dropping as well. If you turn on a game that looks like a nsw cup level game it hardly encourages you to keep watching the game and even less to tune in next time. I barely lifted my head out of my book last night to see what was happening on tv it was such a non event so I can imagine how non die hard rl viewers perceived it.

I'll be honestly surprised if the crowd tops 2,000 at ANZ tonight given the location, opposition, time slot and how cold it is in this wind...

Greenberg bows down to his masters.
He is like the three aliens (little green men) in Toy Story "The Claw, the claw"!!
Replace aliens with Greenberg, replace the claw with the TV remote control

I completely agree the pre-game show is tedious rubbish but they're stuck on doing it for whatever reason.

I'd prefer to see a 7:20 kickoff for Thursday games but as long as ACA nearly doubles the metro ratings the NRL gets, it ain't gonna happen.

That said I'm a bit over 1hr news bulletins, they're full of repeat stories, bad jokes and need to go back to 30 minutes.

But anyway, TV rules our game sadly, and crowds will suffer along with it.

Feels 2C in the wind.

4,000 would be a pass mark.......

Lots of damage has happened around Sydney today and I'm certain the roads are a nightmare plus the trains are late........

big hit!

just stretching out the length of prime time content. game starts at 730, game finishes about 900-910 with still an hour and half to go till end of prime-time survey. starting later gives them an extra half hour and keeps folks on longer and counting towards the survey before switching off.

i keep thinking there must be a flaw in the Oztam ratings as practically every night every show in the top 20 rates higher in Melbourne than Sydney

I am an Eels fan - I live and work near the airport. My choice last night - spend two hours getting to the game, match finishes close to 10pm, not get home until 11pm. And as a woman, I am not riding public transport at night. Plus I start work at 6am....

Not only does watching it on TV save time, it saves a lot of money too.

I dare say even if they opened the gates last night, you still wouldnt get 10K.

People have lives - work, school, study etc.

crowds are down
TV ratings are down too so your theory doesn't stack up

as i explained , If my team isn't playing Im less likely to watch a game on TV with no one watching it at the venue , as opposed to more likely I will tune in if the joint is packed

option A looks like an amatuer league hit out that

everyone has lives , school , work , study etc anywhere they live
Sydney is a bit harder to get around then other places .. ok.. a lot
so combining that with ridiculous KO times & or / on ludicrous days to play games , then we have a look of the amatuer hour & the perception is excatly that
that the NRL is amatuer

its when the sun shines on a Sunday arvo , or on a balmy saturday night that the excuses start to wear thin though & Sydneysiders need to support their clubs & what is essentially .. their game .. a lot better
