The Fans survey has just came out in today's Telegraph newspaper and The fans unanimously voted 66 percent for Surburban grounds over the concrete eyesores ANZ and Alliance..

I have been baged on here by a couple for liking the older grounds.. The fans overwhelmingly want revamped Suburban grounds.

What if the government upgrades the suburban grounds and lifts the capacity to 20k.

I believe the Gosford stadium should be the blueprint for future 20k capacity. Not too big and not too small.

A similar ground would be great at Brookvale.

As long as they don't run out of beer by half time again.

Small but heavy thunderstorms have been sweeping through Brisbane this morning.

Meant to continue all day. 25k will make me happy, tickets were selling well though...

They also said there are too many Sydney teams lol. If our ambition is 12k crowds and the local pizza shop as your main sponsor than suburban grounds fit the bill perfectly.

But Tim Flannery promised us droughts ,and all the dams will be empty, due to global yawning.

They are somewhat land locked in their supporter base and don't seem to have been able to stretch into broader Sydney markets. Their crowds are a bit Jekyll and Hyde but 14k is around norm for them it seems. Taking 2-3 games to Gosford would be a good idea for them and the RL fans of Gosford. Having said that the Eastern suburbs have a population of around 237k. That's as many as my birth city and we have three clubs; two RL drawing 13k and 8k and a soccer club that draws 20k in a similar population, so 20k shouldn't be out of the question if RL is popular.
Then someone else can pick up 1-2 games in Adelaide as a secondary fanbase to boost their numbers.

The trouble is it is not. The Eastern Suburbs of Sydney is just not core rugby league demographics. Union is masive, AFL comes second and league is a distant third. It's one of Australias wealthiest areas, with a big Jewish population and a heap of highly skilled migrants from the U.K and U.S. That 237k is almost the same as the Sutherland shires population and there are 14 junior clubs in that district. The Eastern Suburbs has 3 junior clubs and has zero representation in some of the older age groups. I lived and coached there for a long time and apart from a few die hards the game just doesn't rate.

Maybe they should move to anz then lol

If what you're saying is right then the only hope they have to grow is to look beyond their borders. the great response from Adelaide and Gosford this year gives them some potential you would think. Maybe 8-9 home games and the rest on the road is needed for them.

If you count only crowds as their growth metric (which according to you is the only thing worth measuring) then yes. But they are reluctant to move out of the area. Their sponsorship revenue is the highest in Sydney by quite a way, that allows them to sign good players, and win games and believe it or not teams that win footy games are more desirable for those that run them than teams that draw crowds.

is it true that the Roosters who apparently have no fans are on track to have the highest crowd average for Sydney teams?

That's only because of away fans who love the roosters so much that they always flock to our games but won't go to their own home games.

We are also not allowed to count our top 3 crowds this year, we are allowed to count the bottom 3 though.

Good post! I have to start by saying that I am not denying what you are saying isn't true, RL clearly has an issue in the Eastern and probably Northern suburbs of Sydney.

My issue is more for the NRL. Why are they not doing something about it instead of just giving up and retreating to Western Sydney. NSW and Sydney in particular is the game's largest market and no matter what area of that market we should be in front of AFL. The NRL needs to actually do some work to turn it around. How will we ever market our game to new areas of Australia or the world if we can't be bothered marketing to certain areas of Sydney?

Why would the nrl give a shit about doing any work? Just wait for the new tv deal payday. Ask the networks what they want every few years to try to squeeze some more cash out of that sponge. Coming soon to the nrl, 6pm Thursday games.

conditional support
ie , unless I can travel across the street i live on , I won't follow my club ??

this is Sydney & its apathetic sports fans to a tee
for the clubs of these surveyed fans to survive the next decade , they must play at large centralised stadiums

end of !!

if myopic Sydneysiders want to remain in the 1970's & play out of grass hilled goat paddocks & play other sydney teams only

let them
allow the NSWRL to take all their Sydney teams back & re create 1981 before expansion started
Balmain , Wests , Norths , Newtown .... hell bring back glebe for all I care
it'll be amatuer hour so it should look like it too

then start 4 new NRL Sydney franchises to Join the 7 present non sydney teams
North , South , East , West , playing out of Allianz , Parramatta & ANZ

re-admit Wollongong , bring in Perth , a 2nd Brisbane side , a 2nd NZ side & Adelaide
a 16 team fully nationally , fully professional comp
& be done with it

Sydneys present dumbo teams & fans can do what they want

A fabric roof over the suburban hill like this.....Won't cost a bomb
http://www.makmax.com.au/projects/sports-recreation
Terrace/rails and seats this then gets fans out from the elements/rain. Allow more food venders and bars...
Every day game at suburban grounds looks great on TV and having been their this year ....It's great atmosphere.
another fabric roof
more ideas..Do this

I have a stadium development idea too to coincide with return to retro RL in Sydney

lets rebuild the Sydney sports ground just as it was in 1986 or whenever it was standing last !!

a few covered stands , wooden seats with splinters for your arse .. mmm nice
& a f**king great big uncovered hill all the way around
whoo hoo

how awesome would that be ? ?

That would be good but I suggest a fabric roof over the hill sections like this.
