What were our senior players supposed to do? Not drop the ball or not pass it? We weren't threatening them by playing safe, and when you shift the ball you increase the chance of errors.
We punished the Cowboys few mistakes (our long range tries) but they punished our biggest one when Smith let the bomb bounce and then got stripped for the go ahead try. But that's to be expected from a third string fullback. After that we were no chance of grinding back in front, and the Cowboys were unlikely to offer any more shitty attacking kicks.
Smith was a massive and unavoidable weakness. The Cowboys had no weaknesses - they had no third stringers and their only second string players were Jensen and TMM. Neither were glaring weaknesses the way Smith was, and both probably as solid in defence as the geriatrics they replaced.
Losing Thurston and Scott hurt the Cowboys attack, but once they got to 12-10 that wasn't a problem.
