He definitely didn't play at that, but was unaware that was a thing when it touched hands.
That's the thing - I didn't know it mattered if they played at it or not.

What about all the balls that get knocked down by a defender in a tackling motion but not played at? They're always ruled knock ons so how is that any different?

So no different when the ball hits a defender trying to make a tackle, they don't know where the ball is, yet it is always classed as a knock on.

I guess in that case they are making a play at the player at least.

On the flip side, how is it different to a charge down which is allowed off the hands?

That interpretation started around 09 and is bullshit for mine but was put in so refs would've have to do their job and evaluate the contact on the ball in a tackle attempt.

What Roberts did there is and has always been the interpretation off kicks.

Bunker making up rules to suit itself. If it touches the arm it's a knock on, regardless of whether he was playing at it or not.
