Former New Zealand five-eighth Benji Marshall is standing proud for the Kiwi jersey and has disgraced a ''disrespectful'' Jason Taumalolo after the superstar betrayed his home nation to represent Tonga in the Rugby League World Cup.

Just a day before David Kidwell named his 24-man sqaud, Taumalolo announced his return to the red Tongan colours to give back to the nation that handed him his international debut at the 2013 World Cup.

Initial reports suggested the Cowboys lock was unhappy with Kidwell's decision to suspend Kiwi leaders Jesse Bromwich and Kevin Proctor for their cocaine scandal in May, but Taumalolo insists it was an opportunity to develop a smaller nation into a dominant force.

The barnstorming lock is joined by Cronulla prop Andrew Fifita who traded in the green and gold to boost Tonga's World Cup bid.

A loyal servant to the Kiwis, Tigers and now the Broncos, Marshall can't understand Taumalolo's reasoning and feels his home country has been stabbed in the back.

“I don’t really care what the reasons were and why he is not wearing the Kiwis jumper. For me, it is an honour and privilege you grow up dreaming of,” Marshall told NZME.

“I just don’t know what part of society has changed that you all of a sudden decide three weeks out from the World Cup you are not playing.

“It’s just a bit disrespectful to the jersey when you’ve been part of the team for a certain amount of time. If you really think that, the decision could have been made seven or eight weeks ago.

“It is an honour to wear the jersey. It doesn’t matter what the excuses are, you shouldn’t be allowed to to-and-fro and choose, to say I don’t want to play this year but I’ll play next year.

“Jason feels like he has the right. If you were in the All Blacks environment you wouldn’t dare — I don’t know why we feel like we can make these decisions.”

International eligibility laws allow Taumalolo to choose between his tier one nation in New Zealand and his nominated tier two nation in Tonga.

The Kiwis are set to be without a host of stars including Tohu Harris and Kieran Foran who are out with injury, Jesse Bromwich and Kevin Proctor unavailable with their suspensions and Issac Luke and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves who are both set to be overlooked due to poor form.

Revenge is on the cards in the final fixture of the pool group with New Zealand set to face off with Taumalolo's Tonga in the last leg of the group stages on November 11th.
