The 6pm game is 100% about getting and maintaining viewers for the 7.30 simulcast game. It is their lead in and television lead ins are vital in the industry. Once people are watching that 6pm, even just the last 20 mins of it they are unlikely to switch to ch 9 for the 2nd game. Many people would choose to watch the Friday ch9 game on 9 because that is what they have always done.
Foxtel are trying to break the habit of people watching Friday night footy on 9
That's obviously the case. The question is whether or not it's actually effective and whether they're paying enough extra to make up for the huge loss of revenue on crowds.
The share of tv ratings for Friday night 7.30 doesn't seem any better than Thursday night so I don't really see the plan is that effective.
Basically the people who have fox tend to watch the game on fox (I mean seriously why wouldn't you?). The channel 9 coverage is struggling anyway and lagging in viewers compared to fox in all timeslots. They don't need the 6pm timeslot to steal channel 9s share.
The Friday 6pm game also isn't that high of a rating game. We could just as easily have another Sunday game which rates just as well. That way they could have a super Sunday like their super Saturday.

Seriously? You think nrl fox subscribers would choose to watch the game on nine despite:
1. having paid to be able to watch it on fox
2.no adverts
3.better picture quality
4.better commentary
.???? Haha
Be interesting to see who turns up to play for the eels next week.Be interesting to see how many turn up to watch the eels next week.
it's the same PQ if you have Fox HD3.better picture quality
Sorry I can't agree here. If you have Fox invariably you're more likely to watch the Fox coverage. Especially now Rabs calls one game every 2-3 weeks. The familiarity and continuity aren't there anymore.Yes. Because there are a lot of people who would watch channel 9 news every night. They would likely leave it on. Whilst rusted on sports fans who are on a forum think about the things you’ve listed, many wouldn’t notice the picture quality and are familiar with Rabs commentary. My mum has foxtel and loves watching the football. If ever I visit on a thu/fri night, or Sunday arvo, I’ll often change it from channel 9 over to fox. But it makes no difference to her, she just “watches the game” as she says, doesn’t notice the commentary or ad after a try. It’s these people the 6pm game is trying to attract, not people who visit a RL forum.

Why the hell would you subscribe(pay good hard earned loot) to Fox mainly to watch live NRL, without ads stuffing up the process, then midstream proceed to watch chNein with ads to stuff up the process?
You'd have to be one Rothfield short of a slab.

Not everyone has foxtel FOR the football.
And many older people have watched the ch 7 or 9 news nightly for 40 years.
But if you are right, as you always think you are, then explain why fox want the 6pm game, if it’s not to gain lead in viewers to stop people watching channel 9 coverage
15K should be the aim every week. So just a little under par.Rd6 summary

Pretty sure fox are targeting the 20-45 age group, not the 70 year olds!
That might be what fox want but it isn’t based on any evidence just a hunch, and thatbhunch is killing attendances even more than we’ve had before. For Fox it is more about subscribors and the simucast of every game and keeping fta out of the 4th game were by far their big wins in this deal. Smith should never have sold a Thursday night and Greenburg should never have sold the Friday 6pm slot. Both merkins formthose decisions.
