Its probably the stagnation(in reality reduction in last few years) that is the bigger issue. You'd want to see your sport getting more popular Id have thought? As said AFL is just an anomaly in their attendance and pointless comparing ourselves as we will always fall short. Better to have a growth target and actively be pursuing it. Like maybe a 20k avg target lol.

That was in regards to why AFL has such huge crowds compared to us.

Of course the reduction in crowds is an issue. But we've discussed that at length over 200+ pages.

We had a 20k average target in the last strategic plan, but with no actual plan to get there. They need to first aim for games between 2 Sydney teams averaging 20k and Brisbane to average 35k. A small step to try and achieve that goal would be no big Sydney rivalries in stupid timeslots. Be a bit more proactive with the scheduling, for example play Dogs v Eels on Friday nights or Sunday afternoons and not have both games on Thursday night like they did last year.

looking at the AFL and other Aus sporting codes its worth noting that most sports are experiencing either a stagnation or a slide.

We were promised more of that this year with the NRL's much vaunted control of fixtures returning. Its hard to see any evidence that it has actually made any difference. Either they didnt get control back or they are merkins who couldn't organise a root in a brothel, hard to know which!

Wasn't AFL's primarily due to the introduction of two poorly supported (in comparison with rest of comp) expansion teams? They went back up last year and no doubt will go up again this year due to Perth stadium higher capacity. Hopefully new stadia for NRL will see a likewise boost in years to come.
A league has been pretty static for last 5 years
Cricket has grown due to big bash success
Basketball is team by team with some teams lots of growth and others reductions
Super whatevers is downward trend significantly, haha

If tigers hadn’t sucked for the past 3 weeks I think they would’ve pulled a decent crowd on Thursday.

Probably worth 11k at best now

Dragons Souffs should be minimum 30k regardless of Mother’s Day

the AFL had attracted 6,511,255 fans in 2008
it dropped to 6,238, 876 in 2012
in 2012 the 2 newest teams attracted a total of 269,173
so with 22 extra games , the aggregate decreased , that's right , decreased by 270K

an apples for apples comparison between the 2 comps , so without the 2 new teams
2008 Average 36,993
2012 Average 33,918

the 2017 figure 36,538

so no
the 2 new teams are not the reason the AFLs average has gone nowhere in the last 10 years

yeh but it was 6.7mill last year. It reached a low in 2012 but has steadily climbed year on year since then to highest ever aggregate in 2017.

NRL has gone from a high of 3.15 mill in 2010 to our low of 2.86mill last year. But Todd doesn't think 300k is much of a drop apparently.

we had sustained growth from 2001 then 2009-2012 was our golden period with an avg over 16k consistently for 4 years. Then the commission took over, new tv deal kicked in and we've been dropping ever since!

you suggested the 2 new teams were the reason the AFL's figure was stagnant
that's not correct as Ive shown
our crowds will rebound once we rid ourselves of stupid KO times , nothing surer

Well their crowd avg dropped significantly 2012- which is the year both expansion clubs were in the comp . Might be coincidence I guess? The avg only started to recover last year.

Their aggregate isnt stagnant, its been increasing year on year since expansion

I take it you're new to NRL crowd picking. Because prepare for a whole lot of disappointment. More likely to be 20-25k

Think Saints fans will lob up and plenty of them are Mums who may like a day at the footy. Rabbitohs fans should lob up too! Wonder if the marketing people have thought about a Mother's day promotion for this game?

their aggregate only rose due to the 22 extra games
the 2 new teams can't be the reason the average dropped & the reason the aggregate rose
you can't have it both ways
if the NRL added 22 extra games we'd have a record aggregate too

the fact remains
the aggregate for 2008 with no expansion sides was 6,511,255
without them in 2017 it would have been 6,438,618

It's not relevant to NRL so of little interest to me or most on here. You seem somewhat AFL fixated.
Why would I reply to a post on afl?

So we switch to aggregate when the stats don't support the general measure - per match average?

:joy: you cannot hide how desperate you are to shit on the NRL and promote other codes in any way possible.

Blah blah, play the ball

When did the 6pm schedule come in Einstein?
