Can anyone work out this ..

Balmain tigers - working class area in past lots of RL fans now gentrified and expensive .. hardly any RL fans

Richmond Tigers - working class area in past lots of AFL fans- .Gentrifed now and expensive .. now more AFL fans

Yes, rugby league is seen as a working class game....and in the last 20 or so years as an untrendy sport

AFL is part of Melbourne everyday life and culture no matter what your background.

Melbourne is VERY passionate on AFL....Sydney doesn't have anywhere near the same passion for rugby league, they could take it or leave it.

Adopted them when I landed on these fair shores in ‘99. Expansion club and some reds players made them obvious choice over dragons (not to mention couldn’t support a club in same vein as St. Helens!) big fan ever since and usually fly over couple,of times a year. To catch games at aami. Great pleasaure of being at last years GF to see them lift the trophy. No bandwagon here.

It was a great pleasure to be at the 2016 grand final and see the one and only Sharks win their first premiership and making Storm fans like you cry.

Yep, as much as I cant stand it, AFL is in the culture down here. It's insufferable at this time of year actually. I wish Sydney had the same love for RL

Maybe it was just me.. but in the 80s RL passion in Sydney suburbs felt to me like what i think AFL feels like in Melbourne..

It was all anyone talked about.. we played footy at school all day we had footy cards we watched it all weekend.. daily mirror had pages of RL every day

It was a golden age.. for people in Melbourne who have 80 years of that passion I'm very jealous

When the Tigers play at Leichhardt in the so called "gentrified area" ,they get big crowds.
Next question.

It was just you- crowds were much less and the talk of league dying was strong

And whose fault is that?

If you know anything about the great divide, within the rugby codes over the past 100+ years ,you may have some idea. Particularly in this country.
I've attended a ru playing private school, and the chances of getting rl there in a sporting program, is about as likely as me scoring a date, with Liz Hurley.
And why rl is struggling in your own home country.
It's hardly rocket science.

Given that:
  1. Storm knocked Sharks out last night
  2. Storm have won the premiership more recently
  3. Storm have won triple the premierships the Sharks have in 2/5 of the time.
I doubt many Storm fans care much to be honest.

Anyway getting back to what this forum is supposed to be about and happy for Timmah to correct me but:

Assuming 44,000 tonight and 82,000 for the GF the total attendance for the season will be about 3,256,000. The best since 2014 and up 220,000 or over 6% on last year

This is the 11th all time highest but about 235,000 or 6.7% less than the 2010 record

I really shouldn’t do this but I will:

AFL total attendance for the year’s regular season was a record but the addition of 2 extra teams and 9 games per round makes comparisons of aggregates pointless (one of the best aggregates for RL was 1995 when there were 10 games per round). Looking at averages is more reasonable and their average this year is the 8th all-time highest

you think their average should be maintained after introducing 2 clubs in expansion states?

That’s my understanding when speaking with Victorians - the game is that compelling
(Personally I’d rather watch a Francis the Talking Mule movie)

This has last years total at 3,156,436?

The double headers and playing games in Perth, Brisbane extra and Adelaide has certainly helped this year.

I liken the difference between afl fans and rugby league fans to this:

Your afl fan is like a couple who walk around groping each other all day, fingering each other in the park and telling every merkin on Facebook how much in love they are.

Then you've got rugby league fans who are normal people.

Or more like the couple who spend the dinner date at the restaurant on their phones, dont really talk anymore, have little in common and are on the verge of a break up!

The rule changes, poor management, consistent pandering to tv, VR, refs performance and numerous other issues have caused the need for marriage guidance counselling !
