The bears got a raw deal, but it’s honestly over now, at least in NSW.

There’s simply too many teams already in this space, the game is at a crossroads and must expand beyond its traditional areas. We can’t afford to think small anymore.

Its not thinking small. The Bears would be a very handy revisiting of rugby league in this part of NSW. That does not stop other areas around Australia entering the NRL. Its an easy fix and fit. Other expansion areas like Brisbane 2, Perth & Adelaide etc can all be part of the top flight.as well.

This is so true.
I have a cousin, a girl in her 50's now, who grew up in Granville and later on, Greysteynes.
Absolutely hated sport all her life. She was an arty farty snob.
Following any sport would have been number 100 on her list of favourite things to do. Completely despised it.
Anyhow, she travelled, met a Melburnian while in Paris, eventually moved to Melbourne with him and now is as big as a Geelong fan as you would ever meet. Never misses a game. Brainwashed? Perhaps. Stupid? Yes. Enveloped by the culture? Definitely.
Sydney is very blasé when it comes to sport. Take it or leave it.
Victorians have always had a point to prove to the rest of the world because of the chip on their shoulder. They use their stupid sport to prove it.

Which would be an answer if it was restricted to Melbourne but what about perth and Adelaide where the afl teams have equally huge attendances or sydney where an afl club leads the attendance race? It can’t just be a Melbourne thing.

There are heaps of Union and league fans on the north shore. More the reason to bring back the bears in some form. I think we need to expand to allow for Perth, another Brisbane, norths and nz2.

ROFL, lol, bhaha. Are you f**king geniused? (rhetorical question.)

The structure of the commission shouldn't be thrown out of the windows just because some KPIs weren't met.

Some? You dumbo NOT ONE of the major targets were met and many not even close to being met, in most businesses there would be accountability for such monumental failure. How did our leader respond? “They were aspirational and shouldnt be looked at too closely”. Lol

AFL and Union are boring as. Just look at the state of the league table - who’d expect parra and Cronulla to be winless after 2 rounds. It might take 4-5 for all teams to have a win. What an even hard to pick and exciting competition. Something for everyone.

Yes, it does stop another team entering. There’s finite places in the comp, we’ll only expand by two.

Even the bears have given up on central coast happening.

f**k it, let’s bring back Glebe and Annandale. Oh and don’t forget University. Let’s just expand back into those old areas again, you know it makes sense!!!!!

Cumberland can go get f**ked though, there’s already one geniused team representing that area.

This.

Set up in Adelaide, even if it is just a junior academy or something small to start then aim to play some NSW Cup games there. Make a connection with a community that is a chance of an NRL team and build your brand in that city. That should be the aim for the Bears now, not latching on to other people's hard work and/or misfortune.

Done well, North Sydney would be worth more than Adelaide. You connect a major Sydney CBD back into league. From a sponsorship, proximity to major oval perspective - you can’t beat nth sydney. I might even go to a game despite being a saints supporter in the north shore.

Re: AFL comparisons, the AFL has spent decades pushing two key aspects of their agenda; "it's better live than on TV" and "The AFL Premiership is the peak level of competition".

Say what you want, but the casual RL fans only care about Origin and that's been pushed by the NRL brass for decades. A huge portion of the population are put off because the NRL Premiership is treated as a second tier comp, you can't bring in casual fans of all of your marketing repeats the idea that premiership games mean nothing until after the Origin period.

The other aspect is definitely tv, I've lost count of the number of RL fans who's attitude toward attending games has been "I want the best seats, they have to cost nothing or else I'm watching from home". One's an issue of marketing, the NRL gets it wrong by pushing Origin at the expense of the premiership. The other is culture, if RL fans are content to stay at home and watch on TV then that needs to change.

What I dont get is all the comparisons with the AFL on this forum.
The AFL mob dont fret about the NRL all the time so why should we worry what the AFL is doing?
Our game is good enough to stand on its own feet and not try and copy everything the AFL does.
What works in Melbourne dosent always work the same in Sydney the two cities have very different sporting cultures and whingeing about it wont change anything.
The NRL needs to find its own ways to get more people involved in the game and not sitting on the couch in front of the TV at home..

Thats where the problem is . Many on this site seem to think the NRL should be some finite number. That should not be the case. As Australias population grows so should the NRL. To secure the NSW eastern seaboard is a wise move for the code and very doable with instant return. The other places like the long overdue Brisbane 2 team are obvious and ofcourse Perth. Other places are potentially inviting as well like Adelaide & Melbourne 2 one day. Constricting the code is not a wise thought process. It should be unashamedly looking to genuinely grow. After all it is a superior football code product compared to others in the market. Insular thinking will get it nowhere. Respect and smart consolidation with strategic growth will.

Glad to see you agree we need less teams in Sydney not more.

consolidate
kənˈsɒlɪdeɪt/
verb
  1. 1.
make (something) physically stronger or more solid.
"the first phase of the project is to consolidate the outside walls"
  2. 2.
combine (a number of things) into a single more effective or coherent whole.
"all manufacturing activities have been consolidated in new premises"

Because they get good crowds and we need to learn how to do that.

Lol. I shall not use the word "consolidation" again in that context. "Strengthening" may be the world. Not into imploding the code at its foundations.

Haven't noticed any publicity or chat for this Saturday's double header at ANZ stadium. Perhaps the inclement weather will ruin this promotion as well! ?
