Weekly visit to this thread to throw in some pointless guesses

Cowboys v Panthers @ 1300SMILES - 13k
Souths v Dogs @ ANZ - 32k
Sharks v Storm @ SCGS - 16k
Roosters v Warriors @ Allianz - 14k
Manly v Raiders @ Brookvale - 11k
Dragons v Knights @ WIN - 15k
Broncos v Titans @ Suncorp - 38k
Tigers v Eels @ ANZ - 31k

Well hopefully you'd know that we can't just randomly play every single game when *you* want it to be held.

Ha, it’s not when I’d want it to be played, it’s when the average punter up home would want it played.

Lets not play the anzac game between st george and the roosters on the same day every year because be f**ked if you want to build a traditional game built around an ‘event’ to try and bolster the shit crowds overall by all the NRL clubs.

How many teams in sydney can/would draw 20k against melbourne on an Easter Sunday night? Zero. NQ have and would again easily considering the rivalry between the 2 clubs and the QLD flavour of the Storm.

You seem so against trying to tailor a draw around what works for each of the clubs, you working for the NRL these days eh? You probably think scheduling the Sharks at home against the dragons on a Thursday night was a masterstroke.

Weather permitting: Roosters v Warriors will be more. Also think the games at ANZ will draw more as they have actually been mentioned in the media this week. Moreso than the double header was that's for sure!

One of the funniest things is how like clockwork, whenever there is a wet weekend in Sydney and no one goes to ANZ, idiots chime in with "no excuses" most of whom dont live in Sydney.
Its wet and at ANZ, during the easter show.
f**k. That. Bullshit.

Is this the same Easter Show that will be used as a reason for a great crowd on Easter Monday?

1 ANZ is shit.
2 Ease of travel to ANZ is massively overstated. If you aren't on one of the train lines that pass through (eg. Manly and Cronulla) forget it.
3 Double headers are shit.

Ease of travel to ANZ is great when the special event shit is running, which it is, but ANZ offers little to no cover. No one is going to be like "you know what i would like to do today, watch 4 struggling teams play football in the rain"

LOL no. There are plenty of shit scheduling decisions, but I'm also a realist.

There are only so many timeslots under the current draw, only so many ways to fit teams into rounds in order to fulfill all club requests before you end up with an unworkable schedule.

So leave those clubs out of the DHs

NQ is about to get drenched from the remaining cell of cyclone Iris. Will affect the Cowbs/Penrith crowd most likely.

Up 10% or so with a bumper Easter weekend coming up

Feeling so positive

And weather in Sydney looks good. The cheaper ticket prices will come into play at ANZ stadium on both Friday and Monday for big crowds I suspect. It would have been good if the other games outside of ANZ stadium games offered the same deal!

My mistake. CC Bears, Brisbane 2, West Coast Pirates and take a pick.out of the rest. The two certainties for instant cashflow would be the first two. The Pirates are on there way for sure but risk is minimised with Bears and Brisbane2. Readymade markets that will provide more local derbies. Win win.

I actually agree with you that we should move to 20 teams over the next decade or so. But I'm not convinced that the NRL agree with either of us.

I think we should go Perth and Brisbane 2 in 2022 in time for the new broadcast deal (both will add value - Perth and extra time-slot and market, Brisbane a guaranteed Brisbane home match each week).

Then I would lay the platform over the next 10 years for NZ 2 and Adelaide to come in in 2027. I can't justify adding North Sydney back into the comp at the expense of Adelaide but I could (if they are interested) cop North Sydney starting now to build Adelaide as their own and then entering as the Adelaide Bears. The state colours match the Bears' colours and they would have away support in Sydney from the remaining Bears fans.

What would you think of that as a compromise to the situation?

Yes. Similar to what the AFL has done with the Bloods as the Swans and the Brisbane/Fitzroy Lions link. I get the feeling this sort of thing should have been thought of when the West Magpies were merged with the Balmain Tigers . But no It didn't. Yes a fair compromise and if some tangible links with the Bears in North Sydney are promoted then it's a win/win!

Those AFL teams were relocated/modified largely because if kept in Victoria they would not have survived. I can understand the need to expand using a brand that NRL fans can identify with but you also have to consider how those local fans of the expansion team need to connect with a new team in their city. That is often done with local branding to engage the local population. You need to consider the impact of what locals deem to be a Sydney team lumped in their lap or a team of their own that they can get behind.

An interesting consideration when talking expansion, hopefully the NRL can develop a long term strategy to put something in place soon enough or face a tougher challenge in an increasingly competitive winter sport market.
