Yeah, Chambers had an off night.

Commentators referred to a 'raper tackle' and I wasn't sure what that was. Probably Chambers groping at thin air when Tedesco burst through a gap all night.

Johnny raper bootlace tackle
Maloney did the tackle.... try saver.

Agreed. That changed when RCG/Klemmer came back on. I thought Vaughan would have more punch.

I read it a little differently. I think QLD threw all of their physical efforts into that third quarter and largely were unable to convert it to points. NSW absorbed the pressure and ran away with it at the end. While RCG/Klemmer were definitely effective in their role in the last 20, credit has to go to Vaughan etc who helped to absorb and repel QLD in that time. That was when the match was won and lost IMO- the whole time Gould was rabbiting on about 'NSW being too nice in defense'

I'm not disappointed with Vaughan or anything. We just seemed to take it easier. Maybe a deliberate tactic to let QLD get tired.

Stating the obvious here but given all the debutants that was a very important win. I'm glad they got tested a bit too and put under the pump. It was awesome to see the young backs stand up for NSW, that was the biggest question mark going in.

Nobody cares how hard you try, if you're not effective at what you do than you shouldn't be there. Yes he was there taking the ball out of his own danger zone but he barely made 1 or 2 m's each carry. He runs a million miles an hour and gets absolutely destroyed each every time he runs it. He doesn't have the skillset or the origin mentality to be out there.

He was gassed pretty much the entire night. He was defending 1 or 2 in the whole night and was really struggling to keep up. Everytime QLD ran it out his way he was run around by QLD and they looked dangerous.

I thought he was selected to run some good lines and look dangerous in QLDs half? He did none of that. If he is now the guy that brings it out of our own half I hope he can start making some metres otherwise stand aside and let someone else do it.

He made the most metres of any forward in the game with a 94% tackling efficiency you dope. He was easily the best forward in the game (well 2nd best if you count hookers as forwards) and was better than anything Wade Graham could produce which is the reason you are salty over Cordner.

As for your ridiculous assertion that he was gassed the entire night, he was literally the only forward getting back to take hitups at stages of the 2nd half and he was the only one that played the full 80!

While the numbers suggest Qld forwards dominated, I think that's just NSW doing a good job of soaking it it up, and capitalising on Qld gang tackling elsewhere...

Anyway, injuries aside, I think Fittler needs to adjust his minutes a little, and while Crichton is a terrific player with a great future, what is the value in having en edge forward on the bench (in addition to Peachey) - Tyson is the best edge back rower going around, and the team is weakened putting him in the middle - add another middle to the bench, I reckon

Cleary and Maloney basically unsighted all night, except for Maloney’s f**k ups obviously. The win papered over their ineffective play - although at least they were smart enough to feed Mitchell out wide, unlike Hunt and muenster starving Greggie all night.

I don't understand how Maloney is somehow above criticism. His errors were directly responsible for both their tries last night and he was an inch away from giving them the momentum in the 2nd half after a bizarre decision to kick on the 3rd tackle of a 7 tackle set which thankfully landed in the field of play. The media are spinning this a performance where he was involved in all 4 NSW tries but let's be honest, Cook set up one, Teddy set up 2 and the other was a true try assist by Maloney via the cross field kick albeit it was caught by a QLD player and then stripped by Turbo. He did make an excellent try saving tackle though so full credit there. I certainly wouldn't drop him but he wasn't near our best last night and can be thankful that Teddy, Cook, Latrell and Turbo won the game when it was there to be won.

I think Cleary was fine though. QLD put immense pressure on him which stifled his attacking options but he made no errors, kept a cool head and stood up in defence. Well worth persevering with.

haha when did I ever say Graham should be selected in this series? I wouldn't have selected him either. The most metres of any forward, oh wow, got anything to do with the fact he played the most minutes? How many of those runs of his actually had any purpose at all? About zero.

He was had the lowest average metres run for a starting forward in the starting forward pack for NSW and the 2nd lowest between NSW and QLD. This is the NSW captain.

He is a line running forward and nothing more, he proved that last night. He added nothing to that match that any number of other backrowers could also have done.

Take your roosters glasses off.

JDB deserves a bit more credit than he is getting in this thread.

I thought that defensively we were much better when he was on the field, and when qld were dominating early in the second half, he came on about the 60 minute mark and their domination ended (obviously not the only factor but he was definitely a factor).

Two of the Blues tries also came off good middle runs and quick play the balls from him, with the dummy halfs (cook and Tedesco) capitalising off his good work.

Tedesco did what he always does, attempts to run into gaps using footwork. What was different was that Queensland concentrated all their efforts on stopping Roberts and Mitchell, and forgot about the danger Tedesco poses with the ball. Their efforts to stop him in the second half were embarrassing really. I'm willing to predict he'll be much more closely watched in the second game.

It refers to any tackle made by a queenslander with a bad haircut. There were heaps of them last night.

Eh???

He’s been playing like utter shit this year, Cook would have had a field day against him.
Sadly you're right. Matt Scott is starting to remind me of Webke in his last year when he struggled to defend around marker and especially around the try line.

This proves he made his tackles and he took a large number of hit-ups

It doesn't say anything about the effectiveness of said hit-ups. I would've thought any fair-minded observer would have noticed he couldn't dent the line at all. Given the sheer number of hit-ups he took it was hard to ignore.

Loved JDB's defence.. hits low and hard which is something we have missed for the last few series. nice to have a different kind of back rower out there. would have liked to have seen him out there for a longer period though.
