2018 Trials

Rein is the worst passer of a football I've ever seen and this is still true

He managed to look better than Wallace somehow. I'm not ready to discount magic as a possible reason.

The things is it will happen if or when it's needed.

Sometimes yes. Clubs don't always do what's needed for various reasons. With Wallace he was good last year before being injured and has 2018 on his contract. He was always going to be our frontline hooker even if other players can do it better now, unfortunately.

Hook and Griffin were interested in a couple of things.

`^ Seeing if the blokes that had surgery late last year were good to go.

^ Getting miles in the legs of forwards and backs alike.

Read some thoughts of a person who was at the game last night.

Thought Panthers dominated for first 30 mins. Couple of errors let to 2 tries.

2nd 40 a bit of rust (tiredness perhaps as all played first 40)

The big guns were replaced fairly quickly in the 2nd 40 for those on the fringe.

Thought Maloney would need a body guard during NRL season.

Hook and Griffin (I know I will get yelled down for saying this) were interested in a couple of things.

I'll repeat what a bloke I know who went to the game last night said. (he's probably better than a lot with his footy knowledge, he has a backgound in being a ref too)

" Panthers dominated for the first 30 mins. Dogs took advantage of a couple of errors, (lead at the break) one of those tries 3 meters forward (my words not his). One looked all the world like an obstruction (my words)
'Last 40 was a bit rusty' he added that some big guns didn't play much in the last 40 either'

He liked the look of Maloney seemed to set up play really well. At least one tackle late, he will need protection come the season.

He also said all forwards played first 40 minutes. (getting miles in the legs)

So I think the coaching staffs went in with a plan to work the fowards in particular real hard.

This is a bloke who does not sugar coat stuff either.

This time last year. We had 2 back from ACL. No Mansour. Merrin and JFH with no gametime. On those counts alone we are better off

I agree on the match fitness thing. That makes perfect sense. The idea that we don't play properly so other teams don't work us out is rediculous though. What happens after round 1? The whole club doesn't go into meltdown because there's 25 rounds to go and everyone knows how we play.

Theyre grasping at straws to defend our full strength line-up being destroyed by a reserve grade side.

Of every team to play this weekend. We were the only full strength roster who didnt want to give anything away. The others used the trials to test themselves. Some teams know they still need more work now.

Trials are supposed to be for running your set plays and testing your combinations in a match situation. But no... apparently we just wanted miles in the legs. We risked injury to every full strength player just to get miles in their legs.send them for a run on a hot day ffs.

Best we can hope for is a humiliating loss fires us up for Round 1. Although we should be fired up for Round 1 regardless. But as we saw last year,it took a third of the season before wefired up.

Agreed. Also match fitness isnt earned by running up and down the field. You get it from the workload in attack/defence. If we wanted "miles in the legs" the best way to do it is to attempt to play our best football. We'll know the year they're going to have after round 1. Any team worth their salt will be embarrassed by that and want to aim up next game. If they do what they did last year round 1 then they have no heart. I'm hoping for the best though.

Yep theres simply no way we gained enough for what we risked with that lineup.

Its funny before the game we thought Bulldogs weren't doing us any favors by giving us a piss easy training run. Then they go and flog us.

Lets just hope we can reverse last years pre-season and early rounds. After how we started last year. I just see us ready to repeat it considering we look worse heading into Round 1.

I also hope we axe any player who doesnt seem to care. Peachey for example. I love him as a player. But if he wants out dump him to reserve grade and let his value drop. Dont reward him.

Both Panthers and Dogs fans who went have said Gus was angry about it. I think that shows what's up more than anything.

I notice how you ignore other teams scratchy trial form.

Explain to me how we are worse off going into round 1 then last year?

My game review, notice the bold and tell me I'm ignoring it again:

"I've downloaded the game to my phone and watched the start a few times and there was definitely two different Panthers teams yesterday.

Before RCG try: we were rusty as hell but ran good shapes in attack and the defence kept the dogs in their end well. We looked like we just needed time between here and round 1 to fine tune things like timing. Reminded me of the Cows in the "TPA Trial". Unlike last year we had depth in our attack and we used inside/outside runners off the halves every time they had the ball with a deep backling meaning plenty of options. There was also a varied kicking game.

Post RCG try: We looked like elite Griffinball. Centres/wingers running sideways and props plodding their one outs. No effort in defence.

Players who stood out:

Kikau should have a big year. Very impressed with him since the world cup.

Merrin is playing as a ball playing lock + looks fit/strong and can bend the line back. Nice hybrid between prop style/ball playing lock.

Peachey looks like his head is at the Titans already. Real shame hope he improves as I'm a fan.

Crichton looks to be the goods.

Which team shows up in the regular season is anyone's guess and I hope they were just told to not take it seriously after the dogs named a reserve team."

Storm also lost 3/4 trials. Does that mean we put a line through them too?

We are better off than last year when no one had gametime. No injuries so in that case it was good.

Mansour for one is better than he dished up. A lot of it would of been fatigue too

Hook will be gone in a few weeks, say what you want about trial form etc but that was a deadset reserve grade team that beat us. Griffin is a shit coach, all the boys had to do was put in and he couldn’t get that out of them.
