2019 ASHES: 2nd Test Australia v England, Lords Aug 14-18

Yes, im sure the cricketers on this forum would put in a better effort than Warner. I know he was great in the World Cup (like Starc was with the ball), but if Australia bats today and we have another top order capitulation, someone in the dressing room needs to slap some common sense into Langer that changes definitely have to be made.

Not saying changes don’t need to be made, but it’s not going to be Warner after only two tests. A guy with runs in the bank survives longer than that.

If you’ve got several guys struggling, the guy with the record survives. Bancroft doesn’t even average 30.

With Smith out for the rest of this test and the next I think both sides will be playing for a draw. England won't want to go 2 down, and Australia will probably look to try to hold on to the series lead until the 4th test

Oh Tim Paine is so gone once Smith's captaincy ban expires
I think thats what the national selectors have in mind.

I just had a look at the 2019-21 ICC World Test Championship schedule. After the 2019/20 summer (2 tests vs Pakistan, 3 tests vs New Zealand), we play 2 tests vs Bangladesh in February 2020. Then, we dont play another test for 9 months until the 2020/21 summer (1 vs Afghanistan, 4 vs India YET AGAIN!)

IMO, because there's no other candidates for the captaincy, the selectors are hoping Paine can still go around until Smith's captaincy ban finishes in March next year and then theyll give the captaincy back to Smith.

If Paine's keeping and batting form is no longer up to standard, he'll be shafted from the team altogether like Ian Healy was in 1999 (Paine will be 35 next year) and Wade or Carey will most likely take over with the gloves. Paine's captaincy has nothing on Smith's, but unfortunately due to the cock up last year in South Africa (and the current captaincy ban on Smith), there just isnt anyone in the current squad who can take on such a huge responsibility with leadership.

Btw, wheres Matt Renshaw? He was the flavour of the month 3 years ago or so, and like Peter Forrest/Clinton McKay/Dan Christian, faded into obscurity once dropped from the national side.

If we draw this test, we only have to win one of the last 3 test to retain the Ashes.

Ideally, a series win for the first time in England since 2001 would be amazing, but retaining the Ashes would be just as good.

And yes, in this situation, England wont want to risk going 2-0 if theres not enough overs to bowl Australia out, yet opening the slight possibility for an Australian win if the batting lineup clicks into T20 mode like England did when they nearly chased down the 5th day target at The Oval in the 2013 Ashes before bad light saved us with 4 overs to go. England will definitely remember that test match ( besides Steve Smith's maiden test hundred), and wont want to risk that scenario.

Renshaw's form has fallen off a cliff. Hope he can get it back. Definately jobs avalable for openers in the test team.

I did think he was unfairly dropped from the 2017/18 Ashes squad and with some players being huge confidence players, he psychologically may have not recovered from that. Hes still only 23 with time on his side, but Id hate to see him be a shadow of thr player he once was, like what happened with Phil Hughes after the 2009 Ashes test at Lord's (Strauss and his infamous false claimed catch), getting dropped from the team in favour of the grossly underperforming Shane Watson, and then the batting coaches tried to stuff around with his technique.

I agree he was dropped unfairly at the time. His form has been a roller coaster since. Langer putting pressure on him didn't help.

He’s struggling big time. They wanted to include him for this tour, but he’s been batting very poorly.
