If Smith captained we win this 5-0.

Yeah. I can make totally irrelevant hypothetical statements that can never be proven or disproven too... Fact is Smith is a weak tactician and his absolute failure of leadership in SA should have his papers stamped.

This is Australia though so he'll probably waltz back in because we're obsessed with making our best bat captain

Why would you burden Smith with the captaincy?? As Baz has said he wasn’t that great a tactician to begin with. Just let him bat and bat and bat and bat and bat. Without captaincy his batting had gone to another level not worrying about anything but his batting, and if in the field he sees something he can always give a heads up to the skipper. Options are thin on the ground besides Paine, probably Oozie or Head and both are out of this test. It’s shows what an utter failure CA have been the last decade with a vacuum of test quality bats and a lack of leadership around the game.

We're stuck with Paine as captain for another 5 tests most likely. If Smith isn't the answer at captain, who is?

We don't seem to have too many players even capable of retaining a spot in the team.

I guess that's why they default to giving the job to the best batsman, he's probably going to do just enough to not be dropped more often than not.

I'm not seeing too many tactical geniuses tbh.

Josh Hazelwood should be captain.

Look around world cricket.

There aren't too many tactical geniuses.

And what was wrong with Smith's captaincy apart from South Africa. He just come off blasting the poms again.

Only one batsman (an ex captain) demands selection.

But Paine is worse than poor.

Lol at those saying Smith isn't a tactical genius...Maybe compared to captaining the local division 4 team.

Captained 34 tests for 18 wins and 10 losses most of which were in the subcontinent.

Paine isn't a great captain. But he was, and still is, the only choice at the time after Smith soiled himself. At the time he was also the only choice for keeper.
...

He is an okay captain by other countries standards. By our standards he's a big step-down.
