No way 30k was there to watch Panthers v Tigers for example. Not sure of the best way to count it but even with the inflated ave for that round the crowds are still down from last year.

Sad thing is the wrong things will be blamed and not the schedule or the poor standard of play this year
Yeah nah.

The figures that are down on 2018 are not 'inflated averages'. If you were to use 'inflated averages' - that is, to count all 8 games' crowds and average those out, then crowds are well ahead of last year.

It seems that the NRL tactic is to use the well attended derby matches to boost what would have been a poor Thursday night crowd instead of scheduling them on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday to boost crowds. We are trying to minimise the downside rather than maximise the upside.

Just doing the NRL Fan Survey.

Interested to see what time most people prefer to watch games on TV.

Currently at 18,128 votes. Results:

Friday 8pm - 30%
Sunday 4pm - 16%
Saturday 7:30pm - 13%
Friday 6pm - 9%
Saturday 3pm - 8%
Saturday 5:30pm - 8%
Sunday 2pm - 8%
Thursday 8pm - 5%
Sunday 6:30pm - 1%
Monday 4pm - 1%

Yes it's not related to crowds, but it's important to see that people like the Friday 6pm slot. As bad as it might be for crowds, you can see why it's not going anywhere anytime soon.

Where would you prefer to watch finals series? 18,066 votes so far.

Suburban grounds - 42%
Bigger grounds - 34%
Dont care - 24%

All over the place that one, no real consensus.

Would revise your comment on the 6pm timeslot for crowds. It depends on where the game is played at. Cities like Newcastle have consistently hosted bigger crowds on Friday 6pm kick off times than other timeslots. The most onerous crowd attendance timeslot is clearly Thursday night. And surprisingly this timeslot has gone ok crowd wise over-the-past two weeks. So factors like weather and where a club is coming and special occasions do matter. I do believe that more daytime weekend games during the winter months are a better fit for increased crowds. Fans do like the sun during winter.

yeah nah. Thursday’s game is normally a 24-25k crowd when it’s on a Friday or Saturday night in Tvl. Down 7-8k because the NRL cant nut up and tell nine to shove it. Last year got 24kish from memory on the Thursday but it had the ‘JT last ever derby game’ factor dragging people along.

You’d have to imagine that sort of effect on the crowd would cost the club $150k at least in ticket revenue. I get that someone has to play in that slot but making clubs play their traditional biggest/rival games is pure stupidity. We’re not the only ones that have copped it as well, cronulla/dragons should always be on the marquee timeslot and not a Thursday.

Yeah/ no. I agree with no Thursday games and having all games on the weekend (Friday to Sunday) .My comment was not meant to endorse Thursday night games but note that a few fair crowds had been achieved over the past few weeks(Leichhardt over 10000 despite $40 to be on the hill). The Thursday night game detracts from the weekend games as far as fan anticipation/enthusiasm is concerned. I personally get confused/less informed with whom is playing when as a round approaches due to Thursday night games upsetting my footy anticipation 'apple cart'.

Leichardt is not 40 on the hill, I live locally and have paid 20 last year and I think 25 this year.

When I said it's not related to crowds, I meant the survey question was specifically about TV timeslots. I understand 6pm Friday isn't ideal for crowds. What I'm saying is that people like it as a TV timeslot, and that has to matter for something, rather than just looking at whether people think it's inconvenient for crowds.

Yes. Got that. The jab at 6pm crowd numbers is probably a bit unwarranted if looking at numbers in Newcastle etc.Just pointing out 6pm is not so bad for crowds especially compared to Thursday games.
