Yeah we just hit our second rowers with short balls. It is our pet play.

In June 2017 I posted the following stats on this forum;

Cleary's passes to centres:

Blake - 6
Peachey -10
Whare - 8

At the same time of the year. DCE to Walker 67 times. Townsend to Bird 62 times.

That definitely sounds like something you train for. I'll happily be proven wrong next year but that's a gargantuan difference.

Kikau is massive but we need to have more variety in attack then just passing short to him and hoping he'll do something. That's an observation I made from the Cronulla game as until Blake scored, they wrapped him up quite well.

Cleary needs to develop that himself.

As many of us have said on this forum, if we are going to pay big dollars for Cleary we won't have much cash leftover to get someone to help him.

I know you don't rate Cleary. NQ had Coote/Morgan and TMM to help out JT. Smith and Slater helped out Cronk so even the best 2 halves I have seen needed help.

Look at all the halves we have on the books for next year. Keighran might make a decent FB. Edwards if given freedom maybe can add to that side of his game.

So we don't even need to go to the marketplace just evolve with a ball player back there. Bulk up May have him do the Wade Graham style something different

Our Salary cap is a little different to theirs. We spend big on our wingers and we also have 3 highly paid middle forwards.

Also, Melbourne cheated to keep those 3 together.

Didn't we buy Edwards as a half? I'm assuming now that we have Ciraldo instead of Griffin and Edwards is fit now he will come out next year with a bit of ball playing.

That would be ideal but we have a stack of halves maybe one becomes a decent ball playing option.

Edwards in for Crichton
Whare in for Peachey

From that semis team alone isn't enough to improve.

The right side is the better in defence so teams go to our left. Kikau is new so makes poor reads in defence, Maloney explains himself.. It also tires them so they are less effective in attack.

So need to go right more but even if DWZ plays centre still doesn't create much. The games Cleary missed still the right did not much

Assuming we keep Maloney. He and Cleary are our halves. Got Luai, May, Keighran, Coleman all contracted. 6 halves is a poor balance. Playing Keighran right centre or converting one to a FB costs us nothing.

I get we can't hit the market but there is options there

That right side was getting better slowly. We needed Whare fit though. Put Mansour on that wing with DWZ on the left and Edwards Fullback should be alright in attack. Just need Edwards to be the variation linking up qith the backline.

That is the thing that will help a FB that can join the line. Yeo and Whare are great in defence but bad in attack

Did fullbacks stand in the line and defend in 2013? Walsh was no better at setting guys up then Cleary is. I'd say worse

Other teams are executing backline moves in 2018 with fullbacks defending in the line.

The fact you are mentioning Cleary and Walsh in the same sentence is concerning.

As I said, there is a chance Hook was the problem. We will know after next year if it is Hook or the players who are to blame for our lack of set plays.

Crap! He was in great form before he broke his arm.
Re-read what you quoted. I never said he hadn't played well since. Just that he hadn't recaptured his 2014 form.

Which is tge truth. He was the best centre in the game before a few serious injuries.

Better pack and hooker will help him and all the backs.

If our roster stays as it is.. I can't see us getting any further in the comp

Ridiculous. Improving the discipline and getting rid of hook alone will get us into the top four next season.

No way do we need new forwards. Just let Merrin and Maloney go and get a hooker.

Our biggest issues for the year were easily on field discipline and leadership, particularly from the spine.

I honestly find the idea that our forward pack isn't good enough ridiculous. Look at Saturday, we had more than once chance to setup for a field goal and neither set was well constructed, we went wide like we wanted to score a try and then would desperately dump the ball inside to someone standing still, there was no direction, no organisation and no execution.

The L word is the big one. The club lacks leaders. Have seen enough from Jimmy to know he isn't the right guy for the C.

Either someone puts their hand up this off-season or we must recruit with the captaincy in mind.

Yeah we need a better captain, someone who actually wants to do it.
