Johnson Gone - Official - never thought I'd see this, particularly not like this:

Vodafone Warriors grant Johnson a release

Wed 28 Nov 2018, 08:42 AM
Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George today announced halfback Shaun Johnson has requested and been granted a release from the last year of his contract in 2019.

George said the release was effective immediately.

“Yesterday (head coach) Stephen Kearney, (recruitment manager) Peter O’Sullivan and I met with Shaun and his manager Peter Brown,” he said.

“During the meeting Shaun clearly demonstrated to us that he didn’t want to be at the club in 2019.

“On the basis of what Shaun told us, we are not going to compromise our culture on and off the field with people who do not wish to represent our club, members and fans in the way we expect.

“Everything we do is about the club being first and what’s best for our future, our development and ultimately our results.

“While it’s disappointing it has come to this, we must acknowledge the contribution Shaun has made to the Vodafone Warriors. We’re proud of what he has achieved at the club and wish him the best for the future.”

Johnson finishes his Vodafone Warriors career with 917 points from 162 appearances.

Not a player but Steve Kearney re-signs as coach for a further 3 years until the end 2022:

Kearney secured until end of 202
Vodafone Warriors head coach Stephen Kearney has signed a contract extension keeping him at Mount Smart Stadium until the end of the 2022 NRL season.

The deal will see the 46-year-old Kearney remain in the role for six seasons, joining Ivan Cleary (2006-2011) as the longest-serving head coach in the club’s history.

“Securing Stephen for another three years is a huge boost for us as we prepare to begin our 25th season in the competition,” said Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George.

Without stability in our football department it’s extremely challenging to improve and to achieve continuity

Cameron GeorgeVodafone Warriors CEO
“We haven’t enjoyed a lot of stability as an organisation, especially in the coaching area. Without stability in our football department it’s extremely challenging to improve and to achieve continuity.

“It’s vital to have the right people in the right roles and in Stephen we have someone who absolutely fits what we need. He has all the characteristics you would want as both a coach and a person.

“We’ve been talking with Stephen for some time about ensuring he remains to continue the work that has been going on and we couldn’t be more pleased he’s staying on for another three years.

“He’s very professional, he has a very good relationship with his staff and players and has hands-on experience as a premiership-winning player, a Test player and a coach who has all the attributes needed.

“Stephen is a big part of our future.”

After four seasons as an Auckland Warriors player from 1995-1998, Kearney is now on track to take his connection with the club to a total of 10 seasons with his new contract.

“When I first came back to the club, I was honoured to be given the opportunity to help the club move forward and improve,” he said.

“I’m pleased to have my future sorted out with this new contract and to know I’ll be with the club for a few more years.

To be honest, the focus for me is always what’s next

Stephen KearneyVodafone Warriors head coach
“We made progress last season but, to be honest, the focus for me is always what’s next for us and that’s preparing for this week’s trial against Wests Tigers in Whangarei.”

The Vodafone Warriors’ season-opening match against the Bulldogs on March 16 will be Kearney’s 50th as the club’s head coach and his 92nd overall. His 100th match is set for the NRL’s historic Magic Round in Brisbane when the Vodafone Warriors meet St George Illawarra in their “home” match on Saturday, May 11.

After finishing his playing career in 2005, Kearney moved straight into coaching starting with five seasons as an assistant coach with Melbourne as well as launching a nine-year term as Kiwi coach in 2008. During that time, he guided the Kiwis to three major titles – the World Cup in 2008 and the Four Nations in 2010 and 2014.

Absolute long shot, but with james roberts on the outs at Brisbane and having previously worked with kearney, wonder if its with having a chat with him.

A Herbert/Roberts centre combo would be great.

Kodi Nikorima signed until the end of 2021:

Vodafone Warriors snare Nikorima
Richard Becht & Photosport.nz
Fri 3 May 2019, 09:59 AM
Kiwi international Kodi Nikorima is to join the Vodafone Warriors immediately after being snared from Brisbane through to the end of the 2021 NRL season.

Vodafone Warriors chief executive Cameron George confirmed the Palmerston North-born 25-year-old Nikorima would be in line to make his Vodafone Warriors debut when they face St George Illawarra in the NRL’s inaugural Magic Round at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Saturday, May 11 (5.30pm kick-off).

“We couldn’t be more excited to secure a player of Kodi’s calibre, especially at this stage of the season,” said George.

Peter O’Sullivan and our recruitment team have done a terrific job in securing Kodi

Cameron GeorgeVodafone Warriors chief executive
“We’ve been patient in watching the player market for some time. Peter O’Sullivan and our recruitment team have done a terrific job in securing Kodi, who will certainly add value to our club.”

Nikorima joins the Vodafone Warriors after making 86 appearances for the Broncos, the last of them in last Saturday night’s 29-6 win over Cronulla. In his rookie season in 2015 he was on the bench in Brisbane’s golden point grand final loss to North Queensland.

A Kiwi debutant the same year, he has now played 13 Tests, starring at halfback in the Kiwis’ 2018 end-of-season internationals against Australia and England. He was the man of the match in the 34-0 third Test win over England at Elland Road in November.

“Kodi will bring a lot to our club with his ability and experience,” said Vodafone Warriors general manager football Brian Smith.

“He’ll also be a huge help around the club in helping to mentor our young halves.”

Nikorima will arrive in Auckland this weekend and will be at Mount Smart Stadium to watch the Vodafone Warriors take on Newcastle on Sunday.

I’m really excited about coming to the Vodafone Warriors and moving to Auckland

Kodi NikorimaNew Vodafone Warriors signing
“I’m really excited about coming to the Vodafone Warriors and moving to Auckland,” he said.

“It’s a new challenge after being at the Broncos for so long but I’m looking forward to working with the coaching staff and the players. I like the direction the club is heading in and it will also be good to be around a lot of familiar faces, both the coaches and team-mates.

“I also want to thank the Broncos for the opportunity they gave me to develop as a player. The club has been a huge part of my life and I’m grateful for the way so many people supported me there.”

Throughout his NRL career, Nikorima has demonstrated his utility value. Used off the bench in his first two seasons, he provided options in the halves as well as at hooker and fullback. Since then he has been used mainly at halfback but has also started at fullback.

The NRL has released the official player contract details for all 16 clubs and it has revealed a few pieces of information that we may not of been aware of, or are different to what has been in the media,
for us these are follows:

Jazz Tevaga has a player option for 2020.
Jackson Frei is signed until end of 2020.
The club has an option on Hayze Perham for 2020.
Chanel Harris-Tavita is signed until the end of 2020.
Taane Milne & Patrick Herbert both signed to end of 2020.
Kodi Nikorima has a player option for 2022.

This is all good news, unfortunately with the good there is some bad:

Solomone Kata signed until end of 2020 (was widely believed to be only 2019)
Adam Blair has a player option for 2021.

Kata officially gone.

Kata granted release from contract

The Vodafone Warriors have today confirmed centre Solomone Kata has been granted an early release to continue his NRL career in Australia.

The 24-year-old double international was off contract at the end of next season but sought an immediate release to join the Melbourne Storm.

“Sol has played a lot of football in all grades since joining the club but after being an NRL regular over the last few seasons he has been in reserve grade (Canterbury Cup NSW) recently,” said Vodafone Warriors general manager football Brian Smith.

“With limited NRL opportunities he was keen to look at other avenues and asked for a release after Melbourne showed interest in him.

“He goes with our best wishes and we thank him for his contribution to the Vodafone Warriors.”

Born in Neiafu in Tonga, Kata joined the Vodafone Warriors in 2013 after playing rugby union for the Sacred Heart College First XV.

He made 26 NYC (under-20) appearances for the Vodafone Junior Warriors in 2013 and 2014 while also appearing for the club’s reserve grade side in 2014.

Making his NRL debut in 2015, he finishes his Vodafone Warriors career with 93 games in five seasons including 46 tries. His last appearance was the sixth-round loss to North Queensland.

He has represented Mate Ma’a Tonga since 2014 and also played five Tests for the Kiwis in their end-of-season campaign in 2016.

Josh Curran signed until the end of 2021:

Vodafone Warriors sign Roosters back rower
Promising Sydney Roosters back rower Josh Curran has today been signed by the Vodafone Warriors until the end of the 2021 season.

The Sydney-born and raised Curran, who turned 20 just two weeks ago, made his NRL debut off the bench in the Roosters’ sixth-round 21-20 win over Melbourne at AAMI Park on April 19.

Vodafone Warriors general manager football Brian Smith said the former Parramatta junior comes into the NRL squad replacing centre Solomone Kata, who was granted an early release from his contract yesterday.

“We’ve been watching Josh closely and he’ll give us more depth among our back row options,” he said.

“He’s an accomplished player who has excelled in every age group representing New South Wales at under-16, under-18 and under-20 level as well as playing for the New South Wales Residents against Queensland this year.”

A 185cm, 99kg second rower or loose forward, Curran was with Parramatta as an under-16 and under-18 player in 2015 and 2016 before joining the Roosters in 2017.

He made 28 under-20 appearances for the Roosters in 2017 and 2018 and also turned out nine times for feeder club Wyong in the former Intrust Super Premiership last year.

He has played 11 times for the North Sydney Bears – the Roosters’ new feeder club – in the Canterbury Cup this season.

Hooker Karl Lawton has re-signed with the Warriors until the end of the 2021 NRL season.

The new deal was confirmed on Wednesday, a day after the 23-year-old was named to start in the No 9 jersey in the NRL "Heritage Round" clash against Penrith at Mount Smart Stadium.

It will be Lawton's 13th appearance for the Warriors after joining the club from the Gold Coast Titans in March last year.

"We're delighted to secure Karl for another two years," said Warriors general manager football Brian Smith.

Vodafone Warriors front rower Agnatius Paasi has been re-signed until the end of the 2022 NRL season.

The 27-year-old Mangere East Hawks junior has become the cornerstone of the club’s pack, earning him a new three-year contract.

The father of four will make his 93rd career appearance in Saturday’s clash against the Brisbane Broncos leaving him on track to play his 100th game against South Sydney at Mount Smart Stadium on August 30.

“Iggy has done a tremendous job for us since coming home,” said Vodafone Warriors head coach Stephen Kearney.

“He has really developed not just as a first-choice player but also as a leader in our group.”

Paasi returned home on a two-year contract with the Vodafone Warriors last year after spending three seasons with the Gold Coast Titans.

He was a 2011 NYC premiership winner with the Vodafone Junior Warriors and then became a reserve grade regular for the Vulcans and Vodafone Warriors in the New South Wales Cup over the next three seasons. He also made his NRL debut against the Broncos in 2014.

It was his only NRL appearance before he linked up with the Titans but was lured home to rejoin the Vodafone Warriors for the 2018 season.

Quickly establishing himself as a front-line player as the Vodafone Warriors reached the NRL finals for the first time since 2011, Paasi appeared in 23 of the club's 25 matches and started in all of them. He has added another 14 starting appearances so far this year.

By the end of the 2018 season, Paasi had also won selection in the Kiwis' 24-man squad for the one-off Test against Australia and the three-match series in England although he didn't make an appearance during the campaign.

Earlier in the year Paasi and his partner Chloe welcomed the arrival of their fourth son.

Tevaga re-signs for two more years

Energetic utility forward Jazz Tevaga has extended his stay with the Vodafone Warriors until the end of the 2021 NRL season.

Confirmation of the 23-year-old Toa Samoa international’s re-signing comes as he eyes his 50th career appearance and fourth consecutive start in the No 13 jersey in the Vodafone Warriors’ 18th-round encounter with the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks tomorrow night.

“We’re thrilled to have Jazz signed for two more seasons,” said Vodafone Warriors head coach Stephen Kearney.

“He brings so much to our group with his energy on and off the field.

“He isn’t the biggest forward going around by a long way but that doesn’t bother him. What he offers is intensity and enthusiasm either starting or coming off the bench.

“He certainly gives us tremendous value and it’s wonderful having him around the club.”

Named the 2018 Dally M interchange player of the year, the Christchurch-born livewire has firmed in a starting role in the last few weeks.

Impressive contributions against Penrith, Newcastle and Brisbane in the last three rounds have seen him retain the loose forward’s job.

He was given the opportunity to start when regular Lachlan Burr was rested for the clash against Penrith. Tevaga responded by making 184 metres from 21 runs along with 50 tackles and backed it up with a 56-minute stint against Newcastle last week when he made 114 metres from 11 carries plus 39 tackles.

He was on the field for the full 90 minutes in last weekend’s 18-18 extra-time draw with the Broncos when he made 184 metres from 22 runs and complemented it with a herculean defensive workload of 72 tackles.

Tevaga is another product of the Vodafone Warriors’ development system.

He was originally signed following an NYC open trial in 2013, going on to make his under-20 (then NYC) debut in 2014. He played 20 times that year including the grand final when the Vodafone Junior Warriors won the premiership for the third time.

Yes that’s correct, left off contract are Sao who is off to Super League I believe, Asyhford, Soosemea and Perham, who the club have an option on for next year, I believe they’ll take this up, plus Luke of course.
