Any of #1, 2, 4 or 5 almost ready for NRL? Because I think they are going to be needed this season.

Knights trial, fan day relocated to WIN Stadium

St George Illawarra wish to advise that the Dragons' pre-season trial match and fan day against the Newcastle Knights on Saturday, February 23 has been relocated to WIN Stadium, Wollongong due to the condition of Netstrata Jubilee Oval's playing surface.

Representatives from Dragons management and the NRL inspected the stadium on Thursday and informed Netstrata Jubilee Oval's management Georges River Council that the surface was unfit to be played on in the interest of player safety.

"This is extremely disappointing and inconvenient for everyone involved," Dragons Chief Executive Brian Johnston said.

"As a club, we believe the condition of the playing surface is not up to the necessary or required standard and we are not prepared to risk injury to our players or the Newcastle Knights by playing at Netstrata Jubilee Oval in its present state.

"I apologise to our members and supporters for any inconvenience caused, but player safety needs to be of the highest priority.

"We have already requested further discussions with council representatives with respect to our opening home game against the South Sydney Rabbitohs in Round 2."

As a result of the relocation, the Dragons will move forward with an NRL and Intrust Super Premiership double-header in Wollongong.

Details surrounding the Jersey Flegg Dragons' trial against Newcastle is yet to be confirmed, and will be communicated as soon as possible.

The fan day will still take place between 1pm and 4pm, and will now occur behind the southern grandstand on WIN Stadium 2.

New timings of Knights trial, fan day @ WIN Stadium, Wollongong –

Fan day starts: 1pm
Gates open: 2:15pm
Intrust Super Premiership kick-off: 2:30pm
NRL kick-off: 4pm

Should of thought of ground before playing heaps of soccer games in the offseason

Unbelievable.

Showcase Trial game & no one from management had bothered to walk 100m across the highway to check the state of the ground before this?

Symptomatic of the glasshouse the boys‘ club inhabits?
And I nearly bought a flight to Sydney FMD
Could they run a chook raffle?

As DQ says, samaras is great for Lebanese food. Manjits or JJs for Indian, Thai carnation or jasmine rice for Thai. Sakura for Japanese. All are within a couple of blocks of WIN.

There is a few restaurants under the stadium but not sure if open. Lebanese one is good food. Got the Brewery as well adjacent. You can always go the Steelers club opposite if you really want.

The poor state of the Jubilee Stadium pitch has forced St George Illawarra to move Saturday's trial against Newcastle Knights to WIN Stadium.

The club announced the decision to switch the game to the beachside venue after raising player safety concerns with managing operators Georges River Council.

"I apologise to our members and supporters for any inconvenience caused, but player safety needs to be of the highest priority."

The Dragons confirmed they have requested further discussions with council before the club's opening home game against South Sydney Rabbitohs in Round 2.

St George Illawarra Dragons forced to move NRL trial against Newcastle Knights due to concerns about Jubilee Stadium pitch

  • St George Illawarra have been forced to relocate their first NRL trial match of the season from Kogarah to Wollongong on Saturday due to the state of the playing surface at Jubilee Stadium - with uncertainty also surrounding their opening NRL fixture.

The Dragons announced late on Thursday afternoon they had moved their trial against Newcastle from Kogarah to WIN Stadium, Wollongong because of the sub-standard pitch.

Dragons and NRL representatives inspected the ground on Thursday and informed Georges River Council, who manage Jubilee Stadium, the surface posed an unacceptable risk in terms of player safety.

Dragons chief executive Brian Johnston said it was an "extremely disappointing and inconvenient" situation and indicated St George Illawarra's opening home game against South Sydney was also in doubt.

"As a club, we believe the condition of the playing surface is not up to the necessary or required standard and we are not prepared to risk injury to our players or the Newcastle Knights by playing at Netstrata Jubilee Oval in its present state," he said.

"I apologise to our members and supporters for any inconvenience caused but player safety needs to be of the highest priority.

"We have already requested further discussions with council representatives with respect to our opening home game against the South Sydney Rabbitohs in round two."

Jubilee Stadium is set to host the opening double header of the inaugural Cup of Nations featuring the Matildas, New Zealand, Argentina and Korea Republic on Thursday night in what is a key warm-up tournament for the women's football World Cup later this year.

Kogarah's pitch has had a larger volume of traffic than usual this summer with Sydney FC hosting seven A-League games at the venue.

There has also been a handful of W-League matches including the grand final between Sydney FC and Perth on Saturday.

St George Illawarra are expected to host five regular season matches at Kogarah this season including marquee fixtures against traditional rivals Rabbitohs, local rivals Canterbury and reigning premiers the Sydney Roosters.

Manly and Cronulla also shifted their trial on Saturday night to Shark Park due to concerns over the Brookvale Oval playing surface.

As well as the NRL trial, St George Illawarra have also relocated their fan day to Wollongong on Saturday.

The NRL trial will now kick-off at 4pm.

Kogarah Council should be hauled over the coals for this situation. How many years did we play there and now for the first NRL game the playing surface seems to be to bad to play there.
I hope the soccer teams don’t make it any worse, one thing they now advertise the games of soccer is played at Jubilee Stadium.
Very poor attitude by the council.
