Smith at times made statements let us say, were well meaning, but he did not know rugby league as rugby league people know rugby league.
It would be akin to Gallop making predictions or proposals in rugby union, if he were CeO.

it was a strategic goal in the NRL’s strategic plan so wasn’t just smiths ideas. The management and commission, you know all those RL people, would have also been involved.

what Smith could see from his financial background was the best way to grow a business is to get more customers.

So what have the Sharks done to get fans to come to the new home ground for this season? Prices look the same. No move in numbers so far

Are they in a position to drop prices ATM after losing money last year? Dropping prices not at their home ground, may or may not gain the extra numbers.I'd suggest if their early numbers are ordinary

No move in numbers said something, bit like when the Eels moved to ANZ,hardly rejoicing.BTW I don;t like it.

The money the club received for the developments, is to be used for asset growth and the new Leagues club.In the end a club who has marked increased revenue ,can fund debt which is used to build stands. You can't do that with losses or losing money on the football side regularly.

So he had zero input? Well all this rugby league people involved just like your comments re Cronulla geography, was askew.

I repeat one more time ,he had a financial background(which is commendable) but it appears did not understand the News influence in the game .We will never know what the code would have received if he hadn't done the Nine deal, and whether AFL would have received less.

Penrith 2 games at Bankwest crowds were no better then the old venues

Which is entirely my point on the fringe Sydney area clubs.Penrith form memory is an area with young families. It's easy for someone to say "oh there's a beaut stadium in the middle of Sydney"get there by 6pm Friday.Or Thursday, it's easy peasy according to the WA Transport Minister.

Similar to the issues Penrith. All of that is fair enough but you can’t say the clubs are trying then say the opposite.

I don’t think the TV money will increase, cap will keep going up as will expenses so need to forward plan for stuff now

well they did give them $3mill a year extra, I guess they foolishly thought the clubs would use some of it to build their customer base?

We know who did that. But then he wasn't involved in previous Tv deals, undersold or could have done better.

Perhaps they had zero idea about our economy over the last few years. And now the drought and bushfires, way beyond anyone's imagination.Perhaps some of the money was used to assist regional areas. The Sharks are tied up with Fiji, that would cost taking on promising juniors.Perhaps for junior rugby league development, the Sharks have mens, womens contact, and Touch teams.
Any club who wastes deserves a rap over the knuckles.

BTW how are Perth's membership numbers(those who have signed to say they will support the club by attending) .Long term financials all in place I take it.

Penrith and Bulldogs were on a Sat night though. If it was as easy as just the new stadiums that game wouldn’t of been 1/3 full

I'm saying some of the clubs are trying. In the Shark's case obviously ATM not in regard to memberships.
My point was the Sharks are setting themselves up and it will take time so they have a sound financial base to offer special deals.
The Sharks have stuffed up more than I care to remember.Building/buying assets and a new Leagues club is a decent start.
I agree I believe TV money will remain static.TV stations are feeling the advertising pinch and ratings drops.
That shows why it is so important to have revenue producing assets .

Yeah I understand, but it gets back to the point about scheduling .If the schedule is weeknights ,the numbers of visitors just don't show up.And if the schedule is friendly Saturday nights, you get families, uni students, kids, oldies, women,in numbers who actually support the club.

IOW it all gets back to scheduling. And I repeat the Dragons v Sharks derbies on weekends attract crowds>I doubt that would happen at say ANZ or even SFS.Else the term local derby is meaningless.

75% of games are on at reasonable times. Most clubs only get 2-3 sht time slots a season so the other 9-10 games are at reasonable times. If they actually treat those 2-3 games differently in terms of inducements for fans to go then that would all least be a start to building crowds.

There’s 4 games that are poor for Souths season ticket holders. Usually there are 5 or 6
Makes the value reasonable poor

I'm only seeing 2? Rd9 Thursday night, Rd20 Thursday night. Sharks got a shtter draw with 4 crap game slots including putting the derby game on a Thursday night!

NRL should have built in a capts pick of 1 game a round that it decides when it will be played. Keep Sunday afternoon for the big derby games like Sharks v Dragons. TV audiences barley change on which teams are playing so doesnt really matter to Nine if that game is on a Thurs or Sun.
