Luai has a solid at least short kicking game, he has more than one try assist from grubbers. I don't ever see him being an NRL 7 just based on how erratic and all over the place he is naturally.

It frankly astounds me why Penrith fans continually want to swap where Cleary is playing for those who have lesser talents than Nathan.

Nath is still learning how to control and manage a game and team. But to swap him for Lui who is one of the most unstructered players in game in my opinion quite silly.

A couple of weeks ago it was Hooker.

How bout we continue training and teaching Nathan the qualities I menrioned in the first sentence. Rather than continually shift deck chair, and stuff players like Lui around.

A short kicking game is handy but the issue I see is say we are 40 out and Cleary is playing it... That is where we will miss Maloney atleast intially

I agree, however, if things aren't working, or a deficiency has been identified, I'd prefer the coaching staff try something different rather than the same old story.

When they were juniors together, Luai played 7 and Cleary 6.

the discussion comes up because people think Cleary isn’t a natural at 7, there’s no doubt he’s capable of it, but I think he could be a star in another position. I doubt he’ll ever be a star at 7.

and that’s not to say Luai would be the answer at 7 if we shifted Cleary, it might mean looking outside the club.

Re Luai at 7, though. Go back and watch the game against the Warriors last year. He’s capable of playing with more structure when he’s closer to the ruck.

Also worth pointing out it’s not just Penrith fans who think this. Nathan Brown & Andrew Johns have expressed they think he’d be better at 5/8.

Here’s the highlights of that warriors game.

It’s wrong to assume Luai would play the same way at 7 as he does at 6.

but it also depends upon the attacking structure Ivan Cleary employs. If he continues to have the team play up the middle, there won’t be a heap of difference between 7 & 6.

Jerome played 7 recently in nsw cup and played very much the same way. The team was all over the shop.

Just saying I think he’s capable of playing a more structured game.

This year he was playing minutes off the bench, 5/8 in FG & 7 in reserves. Not a good recipe for structure or growth.

Anyway if Ivan sticks with his structure of a half either side, we’ll get to see him play some first receiver on the left.

Yeah you are probably right about him being able to play 7, but it would be something he would likely have to to work on(playing within that structure).

Forgetting their style of play I think mentally Cleary is far more suited to leading and directing as a 7, he is very level headed and handles pressure well. Luai is a firey and emotional character on the field.

Which goes with all the times I have seen him in lower grades as a regular half

There’s an argument that’s exactly what our FG team needs.

In my view we were a better team when we played more off the cuff football under Hook.

Obviously you don’t want to overdo it, but if he can dial it back just a little it could work well.

For you is it more about getting Jerome into the 7 jersey or Nathan into the 6?

I think Nathan could play 6 easily, Jerome can probably play 7 but I don’t see how it makes Jerome more effective...if he’s in the halves id rather have him playing 6 and looking for chances rather than spending time directing and organising the team and getting us up the field. Jerome is effective playing off the cuff, i’d not want to stifle that. I think you are right that we need more of that in the team, just not from our main organiser if that makes sense.

It’s a bit of both. Ie about Cleary & Luai.

If Luai can pull back the fancy play a bit, I think we could benefit more from having an attacking minded player as first receiver.

And I also think Cleary can be a better player a little wider. Would give him more of a chance to use his excellent running game.

Either way I’m excited to see what Luai can do given an extended run at 5/8.

I really disagree with those who think he’s a utility. I thought he was bad in that role, and all his better games were in the starting side.

Nice to see a few highlights from Hetherington in that video. I'm glad we didn't release him, if he can start the season injury free and in the right head space he can add a lot to the team next season.

Burton will push Luai out before the year is done. Im very confident about this

If he does, then I'd like to see Luai move to fullback. With his speed, footwork, passing and short kicking game, he has everything we lack at fullback with Edwards playing there. A spine of Luai, Burton, Cleary and Koroisau would certainly help our attack.

I know it won't happen though, the safe way to start the season is Cleary and Luai in the halves and Edwards at fullback.

I'd play him at fullback or centre if he doesn't work at 6. I think we need his x factor but also need structure
