Also, from Fox Sports,
He was dubbed the
āman of the momentā during his best performance in recent memory. And now Michael Ennis believes Anthony Milford can be considered a āgreat buyā for the Rabbitohs.
For the last couple of years Milford has felt the burden of the $1 million price tag. His form has suffered, he was dropped to reserve grade and was told by the Broncos he wouldnāt be offered a new contract beyond this season.
The Rabbitohs swooped in and signed the 27-year-old on a cut-price deal. Whether that peace of mind contributed or not, Milford gave his new club a taste of whatās to come when he led the Broncos to a thrilling two-point win over the Warriors with a try, three try assists, four tackle busts and three linebreak assists.
Ennis believes if the veteran playmaker can continue with that same brand of free-flowing footy he could end up being a āgreat buyā for the Rabbitohs next season.
āThereās never been any question about his talent,ā Ennis told Big League Wrap.
āWhatever was involved in his preparation this week, whatever his mind set was going to the game today, he needs to bottle that.
āThereās a great footballer in Anthony Milford. Itās just about him bringing it consistently. Heās been able to do that, he did that in 2015, but heās struggled to reproduce that.
āJust seeing the freedom and the smile that he played with today shows thereās still that desire deep down to have success. South Sydney have seen that and theyāve taken a chance.
āHe looked like he played with a real weight off his shoulders. The moment he scored was brilliant. We havenāt seen that look on Milfordās face for years, it was so good to see. āListening to Ben Ikin throughout the year, before he went to the Brisbane Broncos, he said if Anthony Milford gets put with a really good half then thereās still a footy player there, thereās someone worth taking a chance on. Souths have done that and it may just turn out to be a great buy if he can produce what he did (on Sunday). He was brilliant.ā
It was a dramatic turnaround for Milford, who just a fortnight ago was playing reserve grade. He was recalled in Round 22 to play a bench utility role, but Tyson Gambleās suspension saw coach Kevin Walters promote Milford to his first start since Round 12.
It now seems Milford will hold that spot.
āYeah, my word he does, particularly on tonight,ā Walters said when asked if Milford stays in the conversation for the final two games.
āI thought that was the best he played in a long time. He brought his natural game, his defence was strong, he kicked well and he was looking quite threatening with the ball.
āWeāve got a great working relationship and I had no hesitation putting him back in the side. We know what he can bring.ā
Milford was on from the get-go. He linked up with Xavier Coates, who ironically was also axed mid-season and is departing at the end of the year, for Brisbaneās first two tries.
He set up Albert Kelly for a try in the second half and then scored the match-sealer.
āThis is the Milford weāve grown to know and love,ā champion halfback Cooper Cronk said as Milford played like the shackles had finally come off.
It didnāt take long for Broncos legend Corey Parker to notice a change in Milford too.
āThereās a weight off Antony Milfordās shoulders, thatās for sure. Heās got a smile on his face, heās bouncing around, heās energetic, he wants the ball in hand,ā he said.
Meanwhile, Fox League commentator Warren Smith said what every Broncos fan was likely thinking.
āBroncos fans must be scratching their heads saying āmy goodness.ā Itās like the clock has been turned back to 2015,ā he said.
Well, even the man himself admitted after the game there was shades of vintage Milford.
āYou could say the old me came out there in the second half,ā he said.
