Decent result given the lopsided nature of the game, the fact it was not in melbourne (which would have generated more publicity there) and the fact that new rule changes have (arguably) let to a less engaging product on field.

Suspect the SOO2 will be significantly lower given Sunday night, while SOO3 should only register if its a decider.

yeh be interesting to see what peak was and how many turned off due to it being a no contest. Still, a 25% drop in audience in 5 years isnt a good thing.

STATE OF ORIGIN GAME 1 SOARS TO THE NO.1 SHOW OF THE YEAR AND GROWS YEAR ON YEAR PEAKING AT 3.152 MILLION

State of Origin Rugby League QLD v NSW, 1st Match was Australia’s No.1 program with People 25-54, People 16-39, GS + Child and Total People.

State of Origin Rugby League QLD v NSW, 1st Match was the No. 1 program in Sydney and Brisbane with all key demographics and Total People and a timeslot winner across the 5 City and in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

State of Origin Rugby League QLD v NSW, 1st Match achieved a national peak audience of 3.152 million (Metro: 2.147 million / Regional: 1.005 million) and an average audience of 2.708 million (Metro: 1.911 million / Regional: 797,000).

State of Origin is the highest rating program of 2021 and up by 13.4% on last year’s Game 1 (national). A further 228,000 viewers streamed the match on 9Now which is a massive 47.7% increase year on year (not including co viewing).

The State of Origin series opener attracted an audience of close to 3 million on Wednesday night, surpassing the corresponding game of last year’s November series with one in ten viewers digitally streaming the one-sided game.
An average national free-to-air audience of 2.7 million tuned in on Nine, the publisher of this masthead, to watch NSW’s 50-6 demolition of Queensland in Townsville. Nine’s streaming service, 9Now, also attracted 280,000 viewers - up from 155,000 in the first game of last year’s series.

Streaming numbers have affected TV ratings the past couple of years, however the NRL still experienced an increase in traditional television viewers as they returned to a winter timeslot following the forced spring reschedule in 2020. The 9now numbers shows the strong growth in streaming, or broadcast video on demand, is offsetting to a large degree the decline in FTA audiences.
The last winter series opener in 2019 attracted an average national audience of 3.21 million, a figure which hasn’t been eclipsed since. The average audience for game one on Wednesday night fell just shy of the 2.73 million that tuned in for last year’s series decider in game three, and well above the 2.38 million for game one.

Last year’s series opener crashed to an 18-year low, however the NRL believe the US elections and Melbourne Cup the day before impacted on its numbers. Origin ratings have steadily declined over the past five years and are well down on the numbers experienced during Queensland’s Origin supremacy. The top 10 most watched Origin games of all time were all between 2011 and 2016. However, streaming numbers have more than doubled over the past three years.
Origin's peak came in 2013 when an average national audience of 4.19 million tuned in for the series decider that was won by the Maroons.

Wednesday night's ratings lift is welcomed by the NRL, who are about to enter into negotiations with Nine Entertainment Co for the free-to-air rugby league rights for 2023 and beyond.

New Nine boss Mike Sneesby was with ARLC chairman Peter V'landys in his suite for the historic match at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville on Wednesday night.

Peak/Reach is literally anyone who switched on for at least a minute during the proceedings. Editors at Blackbox say its a rubbish stat thats virtually meaningless.

Perths is metro only(he main cities). Wookies includes regional viewers.

When does 9 regional go back to WIN TV? Their seems to be a drop since that came into Play.

When you add streaming it was almost 3m. I think that is best now given Netflix, Stan etc are popular. Easy for non sport fans to tune in elsewhere

Having Townsville hosting Origin was brilliant. Packed out a beautiful new stadium. However if we want Origin ratings to go over the 3 million mark, which includes regionals, then you need to have a game at either Melbourne, Perth or Adelaide.

Like with everything, the pandemic has forced changes at the last minute. Looking at the future, Qld have got two potential superstars of the future in S.Walker and Walsh.

When both get their opportunity, they will add a fresh injection into Origin.

I think that is the case across most programs. Too much access to Stan, netflix etc. no need to stick to FTA because it is the best option of 10 programs

I can't think of a night in the last 2 years where my household has watched FTA, if it wasn't an exclusive sporting event.

I think WIN's reinstatement as the regional provider is hugely important in gathering ratings correctly.
Prior to them exiting the AFL had between 60 to 75% of our ratings for games.
when WIN went , they're now about even.

We have 6 million people in our regional traditional areas
the AFL's , 3 million
everyone knows how popular NRL is in country NSW /ACT & QLD.
Anyone suggesting as many people are watching AFL in their regionals as are watching NRL in ours
needs to be committed to an institution.

STATE OF ORIGIN GAME 2 DOMINATES SUNDAY, GROWS AUDIENCE VS 2019, 2020 AND SCORES AN OVERWHELMING PEAK LINEAR AUDIENCE OF 3.122 MILLION

State of Origin was the dominant No. 1 program of the night across all key demographics and Total People.

State of Origin – Match 2 achieved a national overall audience of 2.929 million (Linear: 2.701 million / BVOD: 228,000) which was up vs both 2019 and 2020 2nd Match.

State of Origin - Match 2 achieved a national linear peak audience of 3.122 million (Metro: 2.110 million / Regional: 1.012 million) and national linear average audience of 2.701 million (Metro: 1.862 million / Regional: 840,000).

State of Origin – Match 2 was up in metro linear audience on last year’s 2nd Match by 12.6% (1.862 million v 1.654 million).

State of Origin – Match 2 live BVOD audience of 228,000 was up 48% on Live BVOD audience of 2020 and up 162% on Live BVOD audience in 2019 (excluding co-viewing).

State of Origin – Match 2 live BVOD audience of 228,000 is the No.1 live BVOD program for 2021 to date.
