Are you serious? He cocked his elbow and slammed a guys head into the ground. That left Matterson unconscious for a while and concussed. Then he had to leave the field and not return.

Firstly a penalty and going on report is not a fair and just punishment while we lose a vital player for the rest of the game. Where is the deterrent in that decision? It is almost and encouragement to take out a teams best where possible.

But what is even worse is that Matterson has now been concussed at least twice in around 8 months. I don't know how many times Matterson has been knocked out overall, but he could have more and as we know the more you have the easier it is to get knocked out again. We don't need to look any further then Friend, Keary and Cordner at the Roosters.

They are all maybe a concussion away from retirement or at least very limited as to the way they approach a game and play, not to mention the ramifications of a life of head trauma induced disease waiting for them in the future.

So with all that in mind the NRL should come down on this type of offence very hard so as to make it clear to all that recklessly and or deliberate hits to a blokes head, that result in concussion, the penalty will be immense.

In my opinion Kafusi should have firstly been sent off once Matto was obviously knocked out/concussed and would not be returning. Then he should front the judiciary and since his offence can be argued both either reckless and or deliberate, the penalty should be in the 6-10 weeks for a first time offender.

If he ever fronts the judiciary for a similar offence, 12-16 weeks. Reckless and or deliberate head shots, with all we know now and the severe negative impact to the victims short and long term livelihood/career and add to that the damaging affects to their long term health, it is mandatory that the NRL get this right.

I would give Kafusi 8 weeks for that offense.

I remember when Jnr copped either 7 or 9 weeks for a dangerous throw. And it was just a tackle that went wrong. No real intent.
This should of been 6 weeks for mine. But it is hard to prove if it was accidental.

wtf - Say Dunster in, there you go just need an extra player to top up the 30 a Junior will do.
Minus upgrades to existing contracted players, as well as potential upgrades to anyone we retain.

With the salary cap roughly static it's hard to argue Matterson, Moses or Brown deserve upgrades, but it's likely a more desperate club could decide any of them are worth paying overs for. We need to stick to our guns on our assessment of their value, but if Sivo keeps up this level of involvement he will allow us to put some nuffy like Dunster in the other wing spot. We are a significantly worse team without Moses' kicking game, and our edge defence would also suffer without Matterson. I'd say we will keep those three but lose Nrown and Ferguson.

With this latest concussion I suspect there will be no takers for upgrading Matterson next year and he will take up his player option on deadline day.

we'll save the difference between his salary and whatever we pay for whoever replaces him in the roster.

yes agree, it saves money as we may pay less for a winger.

But @hindy111 example assumes the money is still available to be spent.

The club would be signing players / putting the 2022 squad together (remember we re-signed a few players last too) on the assumption Fergo isn’t here. Thus just because Fergo isn’t here doesn’t automatically mean there’s now $500k free to sign someone. Good chance it’s already been spent (or budgeted for)

Regarding our cap, we are probably in a good position because of the Jennings situation.

If he is eventually suspended won’t we have his cap money from this year to spend - how would this work?

Does that mean that $400k or whatever his contract (for this year) is available to us to spend next year. Thus we are allowed to spend above the cap amount next year ?

Plus with his 2022 contract amount, We could have potentially $800k free to spend next year.

I'd say we could use this year's cap space to front load an extension or even the final top 30 signing if some useful merkin comes available.

I don't go in for all this "it may have been accidental" malarkey in this case.

The Storm more then any other side train to wrestle and hurt you in tackles and in this case(tackle) what did Kaufusi think? That Matterson doesn't have a head and his elbow was going to hit the turf only?

He at the very least should know that there is a players head right there where his arm/elbow is coming down hard and adjusted it accordingly. But no he didn't. Instead in accordance to the way the Storm flaunt the rules more then anyone when tackling is concerned he cocked his elbow instead and knocked him out

What a wanker. I stand by my previous post, if we want to help protect the brains of our players, then this "accidental" head tackle should be eradicated from the game.

At the very least Hindy he should be getting 6 weeks, but I personally think he should be getting 8 weeks, but 2 is an absolute joke and doesn't send a strong enough message at all.

No disrespect to George and it's only round 2 but would Gennings be Bellamys first ever failure?
Thank God Vunivalu wasn't playing last night.

Drowns long kicking game is improving Poo. Maybe thank Joey as there are a few green shoots this year with Mitch, Drown and in particular, Rheed.

Not counting any chickens, but the two wins so far remind me of when Brian Smith took over. They could win the close hard slogs and find a way to win. Just not premierships sadly.

Junior had about 160 carry over points, many of which were for a similar offence. He picked up an attacker who had stopped running (was trying to play the ball in fact) and droppped him on his head. The offence would have attracted 3-4 weeks other than his carry over points. He obviously didn't mean to drop the guy on his head, but there was no need at all to lift him

I agree, he should at least have bin sin-binned (according to the NRL's own apparent guidelines). Then suspended for quite some time.
