Yeah another perfect example of how these narratives get built and people like to stick to them no matter what - no recognition for that big game (he got the recognition at the time, but no one supporting the argument that he doesn’t perform in big games would bring that up) but plenty willing to condemn him as not performing in game 3 when it was clear to see that not even the hybrid of Andrew Johns and Johnathon Thurston wouldn’t have been able to do anything on the back of the performance of the forward pack.

He is clearly already a leader in this team you could see it last year. Naden or someone did an interview and said Nathan is already like an old head at training telling people what to do. I liked Yeo for Captain but the coaches are there every day, even Gower thinks Nathan should be captain so I dont think its to extrreme to name Nathan co-captain.

As far as his big game performances go I agree that it is not anything to worry about, he definitely dominated some big games last year despite the poor GF. Giving him more control might make him play better who knows.

There has to be a captain advised to the ref at the commencement of play. We'll see who it is that questions the ref about calls when they are both on the field. I'm not a fan of multiple captains. Maybe the thinking is that it worked in helping Cordner get the NSW (and Australian) capaincy, it might work for Nathan too. He seems to be next in line after Tedesco.

Captain is more than gameday though. Spreads the off field commitments and so on

Bulldogs turn down Panthers’ trade offer for departing halfback Matt Burton
Penrith have a Canterbury star in their sights as they chase a deal to allow their young gun an early release.

Canterbury have declined Penrith’s first trade offer that would see Matt Burton head to Belmore a year prior to his pending move, with former Maroon Dylan Napa involved in the Panthers’ request.

According to The Daily Telegraph, the Bulldogs turned down the Panthers revised offer after Burton’s agent David Riolo stated his client should be granted an early release from his contract.

While Penrith are standing firm on holding Burton, there is room for a prompt move should the Bulldogs offer a suitable player in return, with Napa in the sights of the Panthers.

Napa remains unsigned at the Bulldogs past 2021 and could return to his best football in a move to the premiership favourites, with the Canterbury prop missing out on an Origin selection last year for the first time since 2017.

While Napa would land as a suitable successor to the departed James Tamou at Penrith, Bulldogs coach Trent Barrett is hoping to retain the 28-year-old past this season, where the club will gain Burton and Storm star Josh Addo-Carr.

According to The Telegraph, Penrith haven’t found much interest in other players currently listed with the Bulldogs, meaning any chance of an early release for Burton would lie on Napa’s future at Belmore.

Whether any move with Napa happens or not who knows, but these articles are literally just to get people to read them. Literally no quotes from anyone actually involved, only thing that has been quoted is The Daily Telegraph.

From one paragraph to the next it says that the Bulldogs supposedly turn down the offer and then ‘Penrith are holding firm on Burton’.

I gave him recognition for Origin game 2, lots of it both here and on Twitter. But overall his performances in big games are below par, he rarely takes the game by the scruff of the neck.

I really think the struggling in big games is a myth that has been fabricated by both the media and opposition supporters who like to hate for any reason they can.

Okay so he didn’t have the best game ever in his first grand final at a very young age - most halves never even come close to producing the type of season that Nathan had last year let alone the fact that plenty of halves also will go through the whole career without seeing a grand final. We win that game by 1 point and Cleary would continue to get praised for one of the greatest grand final tries in history. I know we can say ‘yeah but that didn’t happen’, I’m just using that as an example to show how tiny of a change can seem to sway peoples opinions by so much.

Why does no one talk about the Roosters game in week one of the finals as a big game? The game where Nathan scored a hat trick of tries basically because he wanted it more than anyone else!

I’m not trying to have a go at you or anything mate, I respect everyone’s opinion who posts on these forums as they have the right to their own opinion. I just think too many people are still living in the past when it comes to the state of our club at the present, and where it looks to be heading in the future - and are inclined to just head to a negative way of thinking straight away.

I’m more of a glass half full than half empty kind of guy HAHA

I look at things in their totality. If I say something like he doesn’t play well in big games, I don’t mean ever. I mean on the balance of things he doesn’t play well in those situations. It might change, but it took him 6 origin games to get his first try assist for instance. He’s played 8 origin games, only one has been truly excellent.

Personally I don’t think a round 1 finals game is in the class of an origin or grand final, but he did play well against the roosters for sure.

In that regard, and given his off field indiscretions last year, I think it’s the wrong time to make him captain. To me he needed to show a little more leadership before being given that role.

Okay, so you look at things in totality but have then just narrowed down the sample size of what you are judging him on to one Panthers game? That being last years Grand Final?

Well, for a start, the whole nepotism angle is BS.

If he’d gotten the captaincy in another 2-3 years after improving his big stage performances and keeping his nose clean off the field then I wouldn’t have thought nepotism would be involved, but given the circumstances I find it hard to believe it didn’t play a role. It was only 8 months ago Nathan lied to the NRL over a Covid breach.

Yeo has never been in any off field trouble, he’s more experienced, he’s more mature, he deserved the stand alone captaincy.

No, I specifically mentioned origin as well.

he’s played the grand final and 8 origins. I’d say he’s had one excellent game, one decent game and the rest were average/poor.

I think it's the position and chief playmaker part that gets him the criticism.

They’re intrinsic. He’s the highest paid played because he’s the chief playmaker.

My point was the money should be enough compensation to deal with the criticism. He doesn’t need the captaincy as well.

The rest of his origins were not poor that is ridiculous. Try assists are not the be all end all of whether a halfback played well.

My point was more meant to be that you specifically disregarded any Panthers game outside of last years grand final.

I think we both know that a game like the Roosters game is on a whole different level in terms of it being a ‘big game’ compared to say the game where we beat the Bulldogs 42-0 only just before that.

Nathan had one, only one, off field indiscretion, and you're ready to haul him over the coals. I do admit, he should have taken ownership immediately though.

It's a pretty bad one to be fair. Put the entire comp at risk and lied to nrl.
