I’m not coming on here to defend anything I think using religion to hide behind bigoted beliefs is weak……however be interesting to see what the nrl players in question cop in the media compared to the aflw player who refused to do the same thing on her religious grounds. The media around it was fairly kind and was either hushed or the words brave were used. I don’t think these lads will recieve the same soft treatment as she did because A they’re (assuredly) Christian, B male and C nrl players.
What do we reckon

A bit of a useless analogy because the players have allegedly said that they do not wish to wear the jersey due to their religious beliefs. This quite clearly means that they do not support the LGBT community, and if that is the case, they are homophobes.
The reason I call them homophobes and zealots is because they pick and choose which parts of their book they want to follow. The Bible says that drunkenness is a sin. It warns against the love of money and get rich quick schemes (ie gambling). Both are a day to day reality of being a Manly FGer, but no one had any issue about that. Yet the Pride thing is apparently a major issue, so much so they won't play in a hugely important 8th v 9th clash that could decide their finals hopes.

Why? Why is the homosexual thing such an issue, but not the pointsbet or Four Pines Stadium thing?

The idea from Manly is great but probably shouldve done properly. Now theyve caught up in a difficult situation. From some reports the Manly players have been named which I dont agree with

AFL had a huge problem with how crowds reacted to Goodes, so wiping every controversial thing under the rug after that is paramount.

Whos to say its not an issue, but if it pays the bills and it does since its everyones sponsor then why are you offended by RL hen every club is sponsored by gambling and alchohol, and 30 years back ciggerettes (Winfield cup)

Gay pride isn't paying the bills, they shouldn't have to wear it, but its the Manly club issue now, now that they announced it, so i think that they should wear it since they are already gone this far, and if the players aren't wnting to play then thet get docked

I guess they were going to be named at some stage after not being in the team. I just wonder if they’re giving up 1/25 percent of their salary? If it’s really about their beliefs they should not expect pay right?

Tattoos also seem fairly common for people so devoted to the bible that they can't wear rainbows for 80 mins

I just feel as if I'm a fair and reasonable person. I have no necessary issue with anyone of any skin colour, sexuality, gender, religion etc. I judge them on who they are as a person, not the pigment in their skin, what they do in the privacy of their own homes, who they pray to etc.

What I have do have an issue with is people, groups etc who want to make others feel as if they are less worthy as human beings. And want to hide behind the Bible or other lame excuses for doing so. I think if I was religious (I'm not an atheist, incidentally), I'd question the logic of a book that says God creates the earth and all in it, but he created people we need to hate on too. And I'd question whether I want to be the sort of person who fuels the condemnation and struggles of minority groups.

I'm not the least bit offended by gambling or alcohol, or ciggies.

But those three things cause death (alcohol and ciggies) both to the people taking it and those around them in society (alcohol especially), massive harms to society in cost (all three) etc.

Oh but that's OK, because they pay the bills.

Again, they don't have to wear the jersey. And they're not. Good. I'm sure they'd say only God can judge them, but let's see how that plays out this week.

I can tell that you are. I've so appreciated such nice words throughout this thread.

I believe the religious folk think passive gayness causes harm
