Setting aside all the social issues....

What's concerning to me is that a decision can be made to wear a new jersey as a marketing exercise without apparently any consultation within the club itself.

No wonder we are getting a million bloody jersey variations.

Home, Away, Alternate. Full stop.

Sell the others as training shirts.
totally agree and they are all crap!

No. My suggestion is that these homophobic players will be jerking themselves off to lesbians.
homophobic players? sounds like your heterophobic... maybe we need a Hetrophobic round also... and also we need purple wig round, or how about left handed round... we have to be inclusive

I think modern progressivism/"wokeism" does much more harm than good, and it's not fair to put any player in a position where they're forced to openly take a stance on a complex social issue. However, I completely agree with people pointing out the hypocrisy in being walking alcohol/gambling advertisements while taking a stance like this. "Sin" isn't something you get to pick and chose, certainly the bible doesn't elevate some sins over others. If these players made the same amount of fuss over those scourges we might genuinely be on the way to a better world.

So in about 48 hours we've had:

* Stephen Crichton graphically lose a chunk of his ear from a controversial head clash/dangerous tackle
* The Tigers lose after last-second all-time refereeing howler; club threatens legal action; NRL unbelievably defends their process but admits wrong decision#
* Kevin Proctor films himself vaping in the sheds at half time and post it to social media; then gets immediately sacked by the Titans
* A player referred directly to the judiciary for an eye gouge
* Seven Manly players stand down from the weekend's game in a massive match for their top 8 chances, over a pro LGBTQIA jersey

Rugba Leeg baby!

Who’d have thought wearing a jersey that encourages a marginalised group of people to engage with the club/game was a complex issue? I’d argue it’s a very simple issue.

The players aren't forced to take a stance. They could choose to keep their mouths shut and play the game, and avoid any of the backlash - just like all the gay players currently do.

Reason why 4 Pines and Pointsbet is accepted then as drinking alcohol is permissible (Jesus drank wine), as long your not drunk, also gambling isn't stated anywhere but Christians advised don't let love of money drive you so both alcohol and gambling are allowed to a certain extent as long not abused. Homosexuality is quite clearly forbidden so that's the difference. Myself as an atheist think their view is fair as I won't wanna a jersey with Bible verse or Islamic Symbol.

Mixing anything with religion is never simple.
When it comes to justifying hatred and exclusion - yes it is.

White supremacists have used religion to justify their racism - is that complex and should we just accept it?

How about when religion is used as justification for sexism?

If society keeps giving them an out using religion as justification, then where will it end? Those opinions do not deserve reverence or respect.

If a homosexual player played for a team who decided to wear Islamic Symbols and Quran verses on their Jerseys will the gay person be Islamophobic for not wearing that jersey? Of course not, no one should be forced to support beliefs they don't share.

Inclusivity isn’t a f**king belief.

Would anyone support a player’s right to not wear an indigenous jersey because they believe that they’re an inferior race? No.

So, just to clarify you think a gay person should wear a jersey with Islamic symbols. A religon which is opposed to homosexuality?

I’m a Catholic. Nowhere in the bible does it state homosexuality is forbidden. In places where it is mentioned, such as Leviticus, it is specific to a certain group of people, in particular Hebrew priests - although the code of Leviticus is superseded by the commandment to follow Jesus.

In the New Testament, the one brief mention is theorised by many scholars as a strike against the then-common practice of adult men having sex with young boys. It never specifically mentions that all same-sex relationships are bad - love thy neighbour is a much more common theme, and there are no qualifications to that command.

Now of course the church has historically been at the forefront of the persecution of same sex attracted people, and it is to their great shame. In my opinion it is based on at best a misinterpretation of the original sacred texts, and at worst a wilful misreading to codify the prejudice of early senior members of the clergy. It’s abhorrent, but to the current Pope’s credit, they are righting some of the wrongs of the past by saying that we should welcome and live all people regardless of their orientation, and that simply being same sex attracted is not a sin. There’s still progress that needs to be made, but I have hope.

To be a Christian is to believe that the Pope is God’s messenger. As he has said that we should love and welcome everyone regardless of sexual orientation, I’m afraid hiding behind religious beliefs doesn’t wash with me. To do so is to cling on to the old beliefs that even the church has moved on from.

Oh and one final thing - the church has always banned sex outside marriage - it’s one of the 10 commandments. If any of the Manly 7 have ever had a one night stand, they’ve committed a far graver sin in the eyes of God than wearing a jersey with a few rainbow stripes.

They’re hypocrites, cowards, and they deserve all the condemnation they’re going to receive. They’re using religion to cover for homophobia and I’m f**king sick of it.
