Anyone wanting theBears or PNG before Perth( & as much as it’d be epic reading PRAFL rants) it’s a no brainer.

Perth has to be next .
it should have been this season with the Dolphins .
Nz2
Brissie 3
Then coin toss between png and Perth (I would go png)

How much did the Reds spend on travel back in the day?

Is it feasible to send the fringe guys and an U20's team East every week?

Given QLD Cup want their comp to stay as is we aren't getting a National Reserve Grade comp. That needs to go with Perth coming in.

NZ2 should be the next side in. Still opens a new timeslot.
Has a rival to atleast build up like the Warriors they can afford to send fringe guys to NSW Cup.

They'd match the 20k ratings Storm often get too

NZ2 wouldn't match Storm ratings for Australian broadcasters, either what they get in melbourne, or especially whatthey get across Australia. And its they who pay 92% of the tv value!
There's a lot of value to consider in NZ2 for the game, but not for Australian TV value. And have we have seen with the Dolphins choice he who pays the piper...

For NZ2 to make sense Tv value wise SkyNZ would have to double the current deal. And given we had a decade of no increases from them, and only this time due to Spark who no longer exist, good luck with that negotiation!

I take it you have no answer then?

National 2nd tier comp is needed when you expand to such areas or the club will have too much money to outlay
Funnily enough you don’t dictate to me how I respond on this site. What I can say is that the game’s current lack of sponsorship, profile and political goodwill compared to our major competitor is a result of the narrow view taken by people like yourself. I know because I sit here in Hobart and can see and experience it. Luckily I have the $ to deal with it by flying to games in nsw and qld. When I do I see the increased afl footprint. Every else I go I don’t see the increased nrl footprint although I am aware of it. I have to read about it to know it’s happening. In qld and nsw I can see afls growth. That’s a big difference. But whatever.

What are you on about

the arl expanded to Perth

it’s news ltd that killed them off not the arl

now with expansion spots so scarce Perth just rank below better places

the way you talk it’s as if the Sydney clubs never wanted to expand out of Sydney

if if wasn’t for the Sydney’s clubs desire for expansion afl really would have a national comp and qld would be a fumbler state

Perth just isn’t a high value option compared to nz

Perth should get a team when we’ve expanded to the crucial areas that can grow our tv rights so we can fund a vanity project like Perth

That post doesn’t address one point I made so why did you respond to it?

Yes it does

you said his narrow view is symptomatic of why afl has a bigger footprint and sponsorship than we do

he’s not even anti expansion he’s saying other places are better than Perth

Perth should wait

Except Perth has had a team and had moderate results.

Debuted with 24k
Ended with 5k crowd 3 seasons later

on the back of lack of money, due to the distances.

No one wants a repeat of that as we saw with the Titans.

Business case will come in and the best location will get picked with all factors considered

The next team should provide new money, Players and be sustainable long term.
As it stands they provide 1 of those

lets keep this to media deal value shall we? Plenty of general expansion debate elsewhere.

1. Australian tv doesn’t value one nz team yet alone 2.
2. Australian tv pay 92%of the media revenue.
3. skynz are not paying more than this deal if you put 5 nz teams in, they only upped this payment to close down their only competitor.
4. everyone is sighting afls massive tv deal gap as partly due to their much bigger national Australian metro reach
5. Perth brings a new valuable tv game time without handicapping clubs every week with a fan unfriendly ko time,
6. all nz2 offers is filling an already sht slot with warriors.

nz2 would be a great choice for growing international game, growing game in nz and better pathways for local kids. But let’s not pretend they are anywhere near as valuable to tv as perth.

Obviously nz2 tick all those boxes
So does Brisbane 3

that sets the game up for another club that can rely upon qld and nz juniors like the storm do

So where to then?

Perth will take a few million extra to get guys 2nd tier footy. Is that sustainable long term

There isn’t a perfect option. If there were they would have already have a side (you’d think)

The options are really Perth and NZ 2. What Canard said is pretty much the problem with NZ 2: where are you going to put it.

You put it in Auckland, you damage the Warriors. You put it in Wellington and Christchurch and you have two relatively small places which are on par with say Newcastle and their surrounds wherein RU is a much bigger sport. Now I’m definitely for another Kiwi side (particularly for player potential) but NZ 2 is a much bigger challenge commercially.
