Thats not based on fact either. from 1992 the AFl were paid more for broadcast rights, they always drew more crowds, and they attracted more revenue.
Murdoch was from Adelaide

why didn’t he go after afl for his pay tv network if it rated ?

He spent 500 million on super league thats how desperate he wanted it

what weee the afl rights worth back then ? 5 million pa ?

the lions and swans both flirted with bankruptcy

indeed the lions were moved from Gold Coast and renamed bears to lions after killing off Fitzroy

Let’s see how foxsports fairs if they lose the nrl to Stan and only have afl as their main winter sport

He reportedly did make enquiries in late 1994 to John Elliot (who had been behind a proposed breakaway league in 1985) who declined involvement, but the AFL had perpetual club licensing since 1985 meant it was almost certain not to happen unless the AFL broke the licensing arrangements themselves.

Rugby league had much shorter license terms - from memory I think renewed annually - which lead to them being very easy to tease out of the league at the time. The license issue is covered in some depth in the book "The Commission we had to have" by Dave Trodden.

Garbage.

He went for ARL because of its governance structure. Clubs were invited every year to joint ARL - they were free to leave the comp as they pleased.

AFL had no such idiotic governance framework for clubs. The AFL basically owned the club under its licensing framework and the players under its employment contracts. AFL also owned clubs IP and trademarks.

Murdoch would have made a super league for AFL if he could. He never seriously considered it, even though Optus vision held the pay tv right, because the AFL had a professional governance framework which couldn’t be undermined like the ARL was.

Brisbane Bears first season was in 1987 at Carrara. They moved to the Gabba in early 90s. They then merged with Fitzroy in 1997, as the Fitzroy licence was taken away and gifted to Port Adelaide Power.

Do you now see how AFL governance, leadership and vision works wonders for the competition as a whole?

Don’t know, dont care. Al I care about is the end outcome which is $’s to the game that tv is worth And the game can then spend to get bigger and better.
did we beat them for the bragging rights?
$402v$643 is all I care about!

No we didnt beat them..

But my point was, with a very one sided score line like that cant read to much into it regardless of who's playing who
tv deals are showing tv ratings are only a very minor part of how the sports are valued, gf ratings mean little, 100k here or there doesn’t change what tv is willing to pay.
There prepared to pay more if

Oh lord. Hahahaha keep deluding yourself. He went for ARL cause it was easy pickings. Murdoch is nothing more than water, path of least resistance and easier to gain control, power and money

So my understanding is AFL averaged 3.1m ish nationally (in afternoon time slot) while NRL averaged 2.4m nationally.

So both teams from NRL heartland in West Sydney don’t actually equate to high ratings nationally. Yet the NRL and NSW diehards are backslapping and booty slapping each other for a West Sydney GF? Moronic

It’s absolute idiocy to think Sydney or Queensland is the future of the game. Its

The future is NZ, Adelaide and Perth.

If you aren’t growing your economy you are going backwards. If you aren’t growing your code you are going backwards.

If Storm don’t make it, no one in Victoria watches the GF. When Storm make GF, Victoria and Queensland watch plus NSW watches hoping they lose. That’s an extremely valuable asset, if not the most valuable asset, the code has - yet they too busy waxing lyrical on all things Sydney they too dumb to see it.

Let’s say Cronulla got shifted to Perth and they made a GF. Even if Melbourne didn’t make it and it was Perth v Broncos or Perth v Panthers etc - you still have another 3m people in WA interested, as well as 7m in NSW and 5m in QLD.

And as West Australians are very parochial, love sport and will always back winners - they’d watch a Perth team in NRL GF in droves.

some people couldn't see the nose on their face if it was pointed out to them! There is no growth for the game in NSW, there's very little in Brisbane. New markets is where the opportunity for growth sits. If this so called Sydney blockbuster GF doesn't show them that, along with the mammoth tv deal disparity, , well there's no showing some people.

AFL averaged 3.1m in the afternoon. NRL will come in around 2.9m for the AU and with NZ would reach 3.1 or thereabouts.

Ratings would have been fine if it hadnt blow out early. Parra fairy tale would have a similar effect to the Western Bulldogs win a few years back

Lack of a QLD team didn't help but 18-0 game over means fans tune out.

Parra fans started leaving with 20 mins left, Neutrals would of gone sooner
