Channel nine bid of 500 million made fox and seven pay more. Implies nine had no real interest In it

obviously the previous bid was below 500 million for the winning bidders

Why didn’t you buy the rights then? Do you actually think the people charged with these types of deals are stupid? Are you smarter? If only you were were there man, things would be very different.

One thing I know is V’Landy’s isn’t stupid, very, very good operator, appeals strongly to the NSW knuckle draggers with his anti Victorian/AFL rhetoric, he play’s you like fiddles, done incredible things with NSW racing, actually it’s mind boggling what he’s achieved with NSW racing taking the crown from Victoria, he is the best CEO the NRL have had but even he can’t sell ice to an Eskimo, but if anyone could it’s him.

Deary me. There’s so much wrong with this post but I’ll pick a few of my favourites.

The usual (poor) tropes of arguments are coming out here

False equivalences - I am not a ‘media company’ so I couldn’t buy the rights even if I wanted to.

Appeals to authority - ‘Do you actually think the people charged with these types of deals are stupid?’ I am presuming that you always have such faith and slovenly compliance to authority figures? There isn’t such things as corruption or incompetence in authority? Don’t criticise your boss, politicians etc because ipso facto because they are in that position they are eminently qualified to be there? Wouldn’t criticise fumbleball management if the shoe was on the other foot?

If you’re actually being intellectually honest, how sad that people launched democratic revolutions for the past 250 years only for people who enjoy the fruits of such freedom of thought to fall back to the tropes of the caring, benevolent dictator.

Straw man argument - why are you talking about what V’Landys did in racing? His resume is totally irrelevant to the performance of his current job. If I hired an individual on the strength of their resume and their performance was sub par then that resume is irrelevant - he/she is not suitable to undertake the role that I employed them for.

Finally, if you are approaching this with any sort of intellectual integrity, compare how the deals were struck, carefully read the Webster article that was present on this thread and also compare the data/ratings of both codes and come back to me.

Article doesnt support your last sentence at all.

and flies in the face of every report that says otherwise.

Dude this isnt written by an AFL or sports reporter. Its an AFR business journo. I mean I COULD take your feelings over them.....

I don't know who wrote it but given you run an industry website

Have you ever known a deal to have no contra?

The AFL statement mentions Telstra so put them in to and it is zero contra, which given the schedule changes seems very unlikely.

It doesn't lessen the deal they got but there is no way it is all cash

Article doesnt say they didnt pay contra. Deal is 642m per year (4.5b over 7) as announced - article claims 600m in cash. Do the maths on 600m pa and it comes to 4.2b over 7 years, leaving 300m contra - about 43m per year - which is about double what it currently is, and what Id expect with an increase this size.

And what did Telstra pay though? Not mentioned in the article but by the AFL so we know they are involved

Also the article says Nine declined to comment. Yet later the author says Nine was going to drop NRL? If there was no comment. How do they know?

Is anyone quoted besides the AFL head of commission in the article too?

No one even knows what Fox paid. The SMH has taken to writing "between 100 and 170m" as the gap between the two codes. Fact is beyond announced totals, no one has a breakdown for either code, except what the networks have released to the ASX.

Are you still playing this game? Thankfully there was another article about club bosses being absolutely p***** (quite rightly) about the difference between the deals and V’Landys negligence in that. Hopefully some momentum is building

Hahah are you still arguing they didn’t get $4.5bill total package and that they won’t be getting over $4bill cash from ptv, fta and telstra? Give it up mate, that’s the sad reality we now face.

$643 v $402. That’s all that really matters and the ever increasing revenue gap between the codes that this will bring.

There has thankfully been another article about club bosses being angry. Hopefully there is a push on

Never thought I would be celebrating such a possibility but this incompetence needs to be punished

Correct

All we know is the deal was $643m cash and contra

It involved Fox, 7 and Telstra

We know ch7 is around $170m from the ASX

Too be fair no one knows the Fox split in the NRL deal either, atleast not until it starts and the revenue split is done.

So too soon to compare the 2 without knowing that. Even more too soon to be declaring $600m in cash from Fox and 7, especially with the sloppy work to leave out the 3rd partner

I suspect that Telstra is included in the "fox/7 bid" part.

We know from Mclachlans presser than the cash part is over 4b, we know the total is 4.5b.

Why would they use Fox money for the upgrades to Marvel though?

It has be a straight payment from Telstra missed in the reporting

Because Telstras deal is for DIGITAL RIGHTS (including replays and highlights for the AFL and clubs website network) and tech work at Marvel. Not just the Marvel stuff.

I never said it was for Marvel only, Telstra run the NRL club sites too. I suspect that is similar but there is tech work done at Marvel that wouldn't be under the Fox banner.

So there is a Telstra only part of the deal somewhere
