Below article from Roy Masters suggests Fox is paying around $300m per year.

He also suggests the $130m per year Nine is paying includes the NZ $32m per year

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/th...ould-be-commended-for-it-20211220-p59j3v.html
that article makes no sense at all

if foxtel are paying 300 mill PA, thats 1.5 billion for the deal . Dont think they're paying that much
the 130 mill pa may mean cash minus contra for both nine & NZ?

its bizarre
but thats 430 Million a year

& the reports are saying its MORE then 400 million a year too, so Idk
its all over the place

Well according to the reports last time we got $1.9bill. This time we got $2bill. So $20mill extra a year of which we know at least $5mill is extra contra, and who knows how much of the sky nz and fox deals may be extra contra? So a $15mill cash max increase. And for that we gave away telstra coverage to it’s customers, added an extra 12 games content a year, gave new ltd what they wanted re streaming, gave news ltd what they wanted in terms of expansion club, gave news ltd what they wanted in terms of closing down part of the digital arm and have to put up with 5 more years of sht tv covg from a “partner” that slagged the game off no end 18 months ago.

how far is that $15 mill a year extra revenue going to go? Dolphins are going to take $13 mill of it.

but like I said given Vlandys “friendship” with news ltd we could have ended up with less than last time so thankful for small mercies.

So basically, what your saying PR is we got more money bu you'll take that as a win anyrate because it was ,well, Vlandys.

Im not sure if Telstra sponsorship money is included in this deal but it was in last one. Also the 1.9m figure included all international rights .

Thats Roy for you- an old fart trying to stay relevant in Melbourne where he drinks at the fountain of AFL where they constantly feed him bullshit. AFL = $470m yearly, tell him his dreaming.

So apart from 9s continued involvement is there any other real world complaints ? And by that I mean non whining and specific.
I would have like to have seen the Saturday night game broadcast on FTA every week, not just the last 5 rounds.

I would have also have liked to have seen the NRL get back a bit of control regarding which games are on FTA, especially the Saturday and Sunday games via flexi scheduling. This works well in the NFL where NBC has an exclusive national slot on sunday nights but the fixture can be swapped out with a better match up by the NFL with an appropriate notice period. Only games scheduled for the same day would be eligible to swap.

I may have missed this earlier in the thread, but does the new deal with Nine shut the door on expansion to 18 teams (9 games per week) until after 2028 - or is there provision to add that team/game mid-deal..?

I think Roy has just stuffed up re the $130m inc NZ money.

The other article i linked was quite clear that Nine was paying $115m cash + $15m contra per year, with no mention of NZ. Given that Nine own the SMH, it's hard to believe they'd get that so wrong.

It is a good deal
Devils always in the detail but Vlandys hides the detail so we probably will never know lol.

on the face of it yes it is a reasonable deal. It increases revenue slightly and gives the nrl a guaranteed 5 years security. last two deals have seen massive increases each deal where as this is much lower increase and in terms of Australian value is only a small revenue increase overall. Most of the increase in this one has come from the nz deal. It sounds like there is probably a lot more contra in this deal compared to last one.

It doesnt match the increases some other sports have achieved in last couple of years globally but given the small market and lack of competition for nrl that’s to be expected.

In relation to our main competitor it still looks a fair bit less but the real test against afl will be in 2025 and what they manage to negotiate after their 2 year extension.

all in satisfactory but not outstanding

last tv deal australian $1.8bill plus $100mill nz
this tv deal Australian $1.85bill (approx)plus $164mill nz

However, in a big day for the NRL, Abdo revealed to AAP that expansion to an 18th team before the deal ends is still possible if the game believes it is profitable.
However the season's format could still change again during the life of the deal, if the NRL believes it can pursue an 18th team and a ninth game each round.

"If we do expand, we will revisit [the TV rights] cost," Abdo said.

"Of course it is [possible an 18th team could come before 2028], absolutely. It's not out of the question.

"If the commission is satisfied with the business case for expansion, then we will sit down with our partners.

"The business case has to make sure the incremental investment covers what the cost is and adds value for everyone."

Its not $1.8 billion it's over $2 billion plus or over four hundred million dollars a year - as per the media statements- get with the program. ( 5years times 400m p/a = $2 billion
Abdo
“From a financial perspective, getting certainty for a sport is critical and we now have our major media rights locked in until 2027. That puts us in a position to think about how we can invest to grow and having the most amount of people playing our sport, including touch, tag and tackle for men and women.

“For us to be able to get over $400 million per annum locked up in media rights in the new cycle is the highest the game has ever had.

Can you read? That “over $2bill” inc nz deal.
Ergo it’s around $1.85bill for the Australian deal. Now of course “over” $400mill could mean anything lol. Is it $401mill or $499 mill? in the laws of probability it’s likely to be nearer $400mill other wise you’d be sprucing the higher figure.

Masters article is a little unclear in parts. The 130m he cites makes no sense given what we know of the Nine and Sky deals - even without contra those combined are close to 150m. (115m + 33m) - unless the entire Sky increase was contra.

The Fox amount was never released previously, so all we can do is basic maths on it - which puts it around 240m+ depending on how far over 400m pa the deal is.

Yeh masters is usually one of the better researched articles but he’s totally got most of that that wrong lol. Must have been on the eggnog or something.
