You do realise Telstra have the same agreement with NRL to run the websites as AFL does? Just is classed as something else

Ch9 in NRL counts radio too. Yet MMM, SEN are left out of that money

So that is why you can't make such comparison without the full details
What are the details of Telstra's deals with NRL and AwFuL?

If I go onto the NRL's official YouTube channel I can watch a full replay of games on the Monday following the conclusion of a round. I went to AwFuL's official YouTube channel and didn't find any full match replays.

Does Telstra pay AwFuL for the exclusive broadcast righs to full match replays and highlights?

If so then that's part of the broadcast deal.

The fact the NRL's YouTube channel is broadcasting full replays of all games suggests Telstra aren't paying for exclusive rights to this feature. If I wanted to get rid of Foxtel I could still watch every game on delay for free without a Telstra subscription. I cannot do that with AwFuL.

You been on a club website? Notice they are all the same? That is cause Telstra runs them

The pop up ads you get, that money goes to Telstra. They pay the sports a certain amount to do that

The last Telstra deal to AFL was $50m a year. For the new deal no idea

I mean the big clue is the "created by Telstra" in the top right corner of the AFL website, as well as at the bottom of the page. Telstra branding outside of the NRL premiership and sponsor lists doesnt exist on the NRL.com site.

oh and this

The NRL Network websites, applications and other digital platforms (“NRL Network”) are operated by National Rugby League Limited on behalf of Queensland Rugby League, New South Wales Rugby League, Country Rugby League of NSW, NRL Clubs and each of their respective associates, related entities and subsidiaries (we, us, our).

All the contact and terms links for the AFL site go back to Telstra.com. All the ones on NRL.com stay with NRL.com.

We got dudded from both Nine and Fox. Fox is particularly disgraceful considering our ratings vs theirs.

The only that anybody got in any way argue that fumbleball didn’t get a great deal would be if it were $200 million in contra or something ridiculous like that and what’s the likelihood of that?
Foxtel should be paying NRL more than AwFuL going by the ratings. Total match length and advertising is irrelevant to Foxtel as their model is based on subscriptions with no advertisement breaks during game time. Foxtel is rippling RL off to a serious tune. The only way we fix this mess is by working with Ch10/Paramount+ to create a rebel rugby league competition.

So?

Those websites don't come under the broadcasting banner.

Digital rights were part of the NRL package until the 2018 rights when Telstra didnt even bid, because the year before they'd been taken off them and had those rights handed to Fox. Around the same time the NRLs digital revenue rose itself as it started selling its own inventory.

NRL Digital Revenue
20135.029m
20145.008m
20154.983m
20164.960m
20176.583m
201823.593m
201924.066m
2020?
2021?

Didn't V'landys shut down the digital arm in 2020?

If so then he's cost the game valuable revenue.

“When you have that much more money over and above your biggest competitor, that translates to hundreds of more development officers in NSW and Queensland, which can further erode the cultural strength of rugby league in its heartland,”

Last week, the academic produced an economic analysis showing that the AFL could be getting more than 50 cents of every $1 going from broadcasters to Australia’s four major football codes by the middle of this decade. Those numbers are believed to be circulating among some NRL stakeholders.

Don’t forget under his guidance the NRL placed the 2nd Brisbane team away from the future growth corridor and will have little impact on the News Ltd owned Broncos.

They’ve also gifted the AFL a foothold on everything south and west of the river with home ground on redeveloped $1b government funded Gabba by 2032 and new HQ in Springfield.

If I didn’t know better I’d say the News Ltd just magically regained 51% ownership in the NRL and are making sure everything is weighted in their favour.

The cheap TV rights and placement of a club in north Brisbane appears to substantially benefit both News Ltd and the AFL.

When is the Commission ever going to make decisions that benefit the NRL first and foremost?

Honestly, if NRL fans actually understood how much they’ve been screwed over since Greenberg got the ass there would be pitchforks and torches outside Moore Park HQ right now.

AFL have got at least $500m more for 2025, 26 & 27. Plus cart blanche to take over the south and west of Brisbane over the next 20 plus years cause there is no NRL team in the growth corridor. These NRL decisions are rancid and have generational impacts. They shape the sporting landscape for the next 50 years. And the future landscape is all AFL

Webster is the best sports journalist working in Sydney

I don’t know how they could be renegotiating soon but let’s say hypothetically they know who they are picking for the 18th team (that worries me because it will be probably the Bears or something stupid) why wouldn’t you do this before the last broadcast deal was struck. Seriously does this guy not know how to negotiate?
I heard Roy Masters recently say he thinks it will be NZ2.
No 2nd tier footy for the past 2 years, likely takes a season or 2 to catch up

That is it. NRL being on FTA in NZ on the back off a strong WC from them may see a huge growth over there and that is a clear team 18.

The next 2 years are a decent enough gap in the deals given the length of games etc, NRL does fall behind on the last 3 years of its deal - how far behind is the debate area.

2028-2031 is the unknown for NRL, Plenty of time to collect data to decide if 18 teams is viable and where to put it
He didnt shut it - the sites clearly still exist and operate - but he did neuter its effectiveness as a news organisation.
Because News Corp considered it competition so saint pete did what they required.

Yet RL dominates two of the 3 biggest markets in Australia and 4 Of the top 5 Rating football games in a year. How does Vlandys justify this.

NZ 2 would be a terrible idea after just what happened. There is not a massive amount of TV revenue to be gained from NZ broadcasters and Australian broadcasters wouldn’t care about a second NZ side.

You only have to look at the Warriors to see how ineffectual they are in the Australian market. If the gap was only 5 or 10% then I would be all for it but the gap between Australian rights is just way too big. Wouldn’t surprise me if it happens though.

He was saying its the playing talent league and union that will favour it to NZ2.
