Vlandys has made mistakes

he’s admitted that was one of them (indirectly)

but the guy gets things done

he managed to add the dolphins during the covid crisis and when a majority of clubs were against expansion (remember the 10 million they paid to get their own report)

go back through every other nrl boss and who actually did expand ?

I love foxtels coverage of the nrl but if it means watching all games on nine to get better value so be it

and on the previous post above of the above the afl could’ve added tasmania and Perth 3 and they probably would have the same result

The ratings they get in nsw and qld are not the reason for their large tv deals. The ratings in nsw and qld are awful

The mistakes he has made are massive though and likely not to be fully repaired. That’s the problem. We are in a position that we are in a massive revenue shortfall against fumbleball and if he tries to fix it now he will probably make it worse. This is where his impulsiveness is not beneficial.

Look I’ll say that his autocratic push through behaviour can be a positive however it is very much a double edged sword. I also agree that previous chairs were too conservative.

What you need is a balance which we have never had. We also need a proper structure in the commission: somebody who is a chairman but acts like a chairman, somebody who is a CEO rather than a lieutenant. We actually need the directors who can reign in a chairman or thr CEO if they go too far. We also need a commission that is truly independent.

I’m in the dictator camp

I rate him as the best leader rugby league has ever had

and as someone who idolised arthurson and Quayle I put him ahead of them

Lol this is delusional. The storm are one of the highest rating teams in the comp and have opened the NRL up to one of the largest markets in Australia. They likely add more value to the comp than almost all other teams. This sort of thinking is exactly why we’re so far behind the AFL.
Their ratings come from NSW and QLD not from Victoria. We’re behind the AFL because the Nine executives are not NRL lovers in the way the Channel Seven chairman loves AFL. Vlandys also negotiated a poor TV deal last time around. We also have the rugby union problem to deal with in our main markets.

I’m not saying the Storm shouldn’t exist but it needs a serious overhaul to ensure it doesn’t collapse once Bellamy goes.

Dictatorships never work and it’s starting to unravel for him now. You can also refer to history on that point if you like.

You need teamwork and you need consultation. It stops people making errors due to impulse or for some other reason.

This is why I am so concerned about this whole ace up his sleeve. This is all been brought up because his ego has been bruised and his id will mean that he will try and win one over Pay TV or AFL because he has been made to look like a fool.

The best thing to happen would be News saying sorry, we are not turning back. I know that sounds perverse but if he does get them back at the negotiation table, he’ll do something like locking us in more years with a small increase or try to rush in another side when nobody is ready. Both of these situations would be worse

I would prefer a second side in NZ to a third Brisbane side. Ideally you would relocate one or two Sydney sides and you would have both (but we know that won’t happen)
Many Sydney fans agree until it’s their team mentioned for relocation. One relocation would open up a spot for WA or NZ and another Brisbane team

Come back to the question about how the sports are perceived. Why does top end of town value AFL more? Why does TV value AFL a hell of a lot more? Pretty simple questions that people really need to think about when they talk about what the game needs to do next.

1. Content amount. They have more games and games have more ad breaks that benefits FTA
2. Metro city reach 16/18 teams in 5 main capital cities v 13/17 for NRL in just three of them
3. Ability and skill of the board and CEO
This is true and an area that Quayle and Arko had built up over 10 years to the point we were number one. The question is what is vlandys and abdos plan to get us back to that point. They dont seem to have a vision other then saving Foxtel.
How about top dollar for night GFs super saturday etc. This is why afl is getting big bucks they are helping fixtel grow super saturday and building foxtels subscriptions in sa tassie and wa by using afl. We give our assets away too cheaply ie we dont know their value.

How many locals play for Storm?

They are basically a QLD team
someone doesn't understand the world of professional sport lol Guess how many players Man Utd have that are from Manchester or even Lancashire. Go on guess. I'll tell you its one. Yep one of the biggest sports clubs in the world in a soccer mad city of 3million has one local player in their squad of 31. Know how many people care? none.

The level of ignorance on here really is astounding.

Our ratings are much better than of of the winter code.
We make more money.
We have an overseas presence.
Not only that, we are recognised on social media as being No.1
But all that doesn't help greatly when the networks can better Recoup there outlay with AFL.

Doesn't help when your salesman is terrible at his job. Vlandys negotiations are akin to a bad car salesman selling a Ferrari for the price of a Holden because they buyer claims to be poor!
We know as we are the NRL must be worth a heck of a lot more than we got now we know what the market is willing to pay for AFL.
Either we really aren't worth anything like AFL, or Vlandys is compromised and sold us down the river, or Vlandys is incompetent along with the commission. Which is it?

That’s kinda irrelevant really.

Storms ratings are mostly on Kayo and fox, since when do we get a breakdown on where their ratings come from?

Well that depends how you want to interpret it. If Vlandys sold our PTV rights for $20mill a year less than last time, then yes Dolphins admission recouped that loss. Though why Vlandys would sell our rights for LESS than last time would be a very serious question he would need to be asked.

You dont say "over" $400mill if its much more. That gets used when its slightly more but less than sya $5mill plus more. We know what ch9 are paying, we know what SkyNZ are paying we have a good idea what the total amount is. We can work out what Fox is paying from that. Its hardly rocket science!
Going on what we've learnt over the last few weeks, it wouldn't surprise me if V'landys signed us to a smaller deal!

Murdoch would happily hand over $20m pa for the Dolphins because their inclusion over Easts Tigers benefits the Broncos.

You want to make sure they don’t catch a cold further down the track; or maybe he can give them some further savings so Foxtel can spend even more on fumbleball next time. V’Landys could claim credit for that.

Seriously that interview was the weirdest thing I’ve read for a while

Arent they owned by Indonesian billionaires? Why would Roar want a poorer owner?
Roar wouldn't have to pay rental fees at Dolphin Oval and Redcliffe Dolphins would have a reason to promote the club across Moreton Bay.

Dolphins would have a professional soccer club from a truly national competition to generate business at their Leagues Club over the summer.

2019 Suns had a revenue of $16mill before the AFL grant and acheived a surplus of $250k. Good luck PNG achieving that lol.
Once we have our metro reach and a media revenue of $643mill we will have more than enough money to fully fund a PNG NRL team if we want one!!
Suns benefit from Victorian tourists travelling to the Gold Coast for a holiday when their team plays at Carrara.

That doesn’t explain why roar would be better off with much poorer owners lol
roars crowds have dropped since moving to dolphin stadium

It would be great if Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs relocated to Christchurch and rebranded as Canterbury Bulldogs. New Zealand Warriors revert back to Auckland Warriors. Leaves room for a third NZ team in Wellington when the market can support it. We should be looking at three or more teams in New Zealand to help the game grow in that country. The fact its time zone is two hours ahead of us will help us screen more games in Tonga, Fiji and Samoa at a decent hour.

I'd like to see the Wests Tigers' license go to the Easts Tigers so they can rebrand as the Brisbane Tigers. Let Penrith become a super club that takes over the south-west under the Western Sydney Panthers brand. That's seven teams for Sydney. Just need the Sharks to relocate to Adelaide and the game is set with the introduction of the Pirates.
