You know what happened to cricket & rugby on pay TV??
..& you think game will grow in non traditional markets without FTA!!

It is not going to happen anyway as anti siphoning laws wouldn’t allow a GF or SOO to not be shown on FTA

It exists because despite decline still produces numbers other formats cannot. Ultimately, FTA needs sports more than ever. Time for them to pay nrl

Instantly you'd lose those few hundred thousand viewers. Over time areas would lose interest. Regionals on FTA are strong for a reason

The key takeaway from all of this is to actually to foster relationships with all networks and encourage them in turn to bid. There is no point in locking out potential options by having seperate negotiations.

Also, to be fair, the coverage on both networks is incredibly stale and is not often very complimentary of the game. They have not really supported the game very well over the years, not just financially of course but also in terms of PR. So I would be subtly reminding them of this during the negotiations.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that the coverage will be better on another network (refer to cricket and Channel 7) but still I think these relationships have run their course (to be fair probably ran their course 5 -10 years ago)
This is very true I can remember when league was on 7 then 10 these networks pushed and promoted the game plenty of feel good stuff and supporting it.

Unfortunately that's true. Those laws help prop up the FTA "cartel". Reason no one is willing to touch them is that as the main beneficiary would (at least in the short term) be Foxtel, no one wants to be seen to be helping out the Murdochs.

Nine are paying $130mill ($115mill cash) for three games a week plus Origin (valued at $30mil) plus radio rights (valued at $10mil)

Seven are paying $185 mill allegedly in the next deal for 3 games plus some Saturday nights plus delayed coverage of different games in different states.

Seems to me at $90mill a year Ch9 are getting 3 games a week of NRL for a bargain price.

Interestingly Telstra have struck a deal with the AFL and AFLPA to use players for marketing purposes. This revenue from Telstra saw AFL up the payment to the AFLPA last year from a usual $37mill to $60mill. Nice when you can get a third party playing the bill and get greater brand awareness for your players and sport through third party advertising they are paying for!

Would FTA be viable without sport?

Ch10's performance says no.

So what? Few countries anywhere in the world have restrictions that certain events must be broadcast on only certain channels.

Know why the EPL gets so much money for its TV rights? Its because Sky paid an absolute motza to get them when pay tv first came about in the UK. Its why they get billions of dollars. In the US the FTA channels bid for the NFL and NBA (for example) because they know the cable channels will, and it rates. They make a ton of money, as does those sports. That is how those sports maximise their revenue, no restrictions.

Fact is anti-siphoning has propped up the FTA Channels in Australia, who do sweet bugger all. They do sports coverage at the lowest cost they can get away with as they know they only have 2 competitors bidding against them. Also if anti-siphoning legislation hadn't come in, OptusVision or even Galaxy may have become the dominant pay TV provider before Foxtel even got off the ground. If nothing else, it may have resulted in a bigger mass of subscribers, which in turn would have lowered the subscription charge.

Our FTA industry is a bunch of freeloaders, like many big business in Australia.
