The basket case that are the Suns apparently bring in extra dollars for the AFL so a Rugby League team in Adelaide would surely have to add dollars to any NRL deal. The big problem is whether our management could sell this.

Well the Midgets as well probably so I’d say Adelaide and Perth would add money.

The thing about AFL expansion is that in Sydney AFL fans already had a team to follow if they wanted to - the Sydney Swans. It's not like at any point did the Swans say 'Hey Western Sydney, go f*** yourselves!' The option to support a Sydney AFL side has been there for decades. And up on the Gold Coast ex-pat Victorians were either following the Lions for decades or their old Melbourne teams. They haven't switched to the Suns because they don't need to.

But with NRL there is no alternative NRL side for people to follow. These aren't 2nd teams in already targeted markets. They're first teams in untapped markets.

But what about that western Sydney suburb of Canberra ?

The Lions lost about 4.4k members when the Suns entered. That would suggest 4.4k of the Lions' members were from the Gold Coast. There are a lot of Victorian retirees on the Gold Coast.

If we're going to argue that Lions and Swans are enough to cover SEQ and metropolitan Sydney then wouldn't the Broncos and Roosters be able to do it?

So now Vlandys has a rocket up his arse about the failed tv deal it would seem he is busy scrambling for new content ideas to bring in some more $'s in this tv deal period. So far we have on the table as possibles:

. addition of 18th club and ninth time slot before 2028
. pre season cup
. end of season tests
. expansion of NRLW to 17/18 clubs during before 2028

anything else I've missed?

realistically only the 18th club adds any real value as far as I can see.

All content is valuable to TV, It is hard not knowing exactly what a game is worth

Dolphins brought in $20m. 9th game should add more due to the extra content. lets say $30m
Pre-season Cup and Tests $10-$20m

Full Televised NRLW $50m - 9 games a week, Shorter games but Origin should push up the value

There is roughly $100m there, That is without extending games bringing in qtrs and other stuff like that

Did they really? Or did Vlandys cut news a deal that was $20mill under last time and recouped it with the Dolphins addition later? From where I sit it looks like Fox is paying the same for 17 teams as it paid for 16, Ch9 certainly are.

If all that fetches an extra 25% on current deal before 2028 I will happily eat my hat and as much humble pie as you'd like to throw at me lol

There is no new content for ch9. Why would pay more?

Only really Thursday night footy is valuable to them. They still get 3 games a week, none exclusive

well they were the ones going on about the value of a second Brisbane club for years to FTA due to audience numbers and advertising opportunities. And yes they are getting 3 more games.

  • Nine will have three extra matches per season from 2023, when the Dolphins join the competition, as well as the Brisbane streaming rights for all derby clashes between the NRL’s 17th team and Broncos.
  • Nine will also be able to broadcast all Brisbane Broncos and Redcliffe Dolphins matches into Brisbane on 4BC.
  • Nine will have three extra matches per season from 2023, when the Dolphins join the competition, as well as the Brisbane streaming rights for all derby clashes between the NRL’s 17th team and Broncos.
  • 9Now will deliver over 100 hours of Nine-produced digital content per season. (aided by the closure of the NRL media dept)

so they got all that for no extra $'s, had to keep them in reserve to bid for AFL I suppose!

and this was from 10 years ago!
'Nine boss David Gyngell has intimated he would pay an additional $100 million over five years in broadcast fees should a second Brisbane team be accepted, even asa 17th team, meaning a bye and the existing eight matches each week.'

The only reason the Suns were set up was because they couldn't move one of the Vic teams (I think Hawthorne) there. The place is full of Vic transplants anyway.

Different landscape now, 6pm Friday and 2pm Sunday means Fox keeps people from ch9. They likely lose money now on both these timeslots, Let alone pay more to potentially get more Brisbane fans in

amended my post to show the benefits Ch9 got from expansion in this deal for zero $ increase. Happy days if you're a nine exec! Especially after you nearly got your pants pulled down by Smith for $185mill in the last deal!

2017 -
Ch9 $115mill cash (+$10mill contra)
Fox $240mill
Sky $20mill

2023 -
Ch9 $115mill cash (+$15mill contra)
Fox $240mill
Sky $32.4mill

so so screwed over to prevent people catching colds..

4BC already took the Broncos games
When has an All QLD clash not been on ch9?

So they already had that anyway

with another Queensland added team they are getting MORE! Broncos + Dolphins on 4BC

4BC has covered All Broncos games for years
The only difference is that ch9 owns the station now
ABC Brisbane, MMM Brisbane also will do the same as they currently do

its not hard to understand!
before next season they got to cover ALL Broncos games.
Next season and beyond they get to cover ALL Broncos games PLUS all Dolphins games.
Doubling their coverage in effect.

Plus gallop had added the titans and they had to put a team in to try and stop the titans claiming the city

The proposed pre season cup is an interesting development , clubs will play trials anyway & the ones televised this year rated extremely well ..

To put a title on the line will add something & a lot of NRL fans will re activate their subscriptions to foxtel services early but.... I propose the NRL put the preseason out to tender & have anyone able to purchase it ,Give those slime bags at foxtel a little taste of what will be instore for them in a few years. Prospective bidders could put it completely behind a pay wall to entice the maximum amount of subscribers

Paramount
Amazon
Stan even
let them all make their case ...

500K plus subscribers at $30 for the month long tournament , I'd sign up to watch the Raiders for sure
Yea it mighten bring too much extra in $$ , but it would be a clear shot across the bow of foxtel to clearly tell them the days of being guaranteed NRL content are well & truly over
