The Game 2023 Crowd Watch

Souths going back to Allianz as their primary venue is possibly the only way for the Rabbitohs to get back to an 18K+ home average.

They can still leave Good Friday at Homebush, as that match has developed a history there and is unlikely to perform as well away from the Easter Show, but beyond that they are likely to draw better crowds against Manly, St George Ill, Cronulla & Easts, whilst they are unlikely to draw any worse against the other teams.

No triggering, we know that when the cult calls the cult gathers. I'm just hopeful that not too many people were racially abused or bashed this time round.
I've refrained from playing this card up to now because I'm a Pom on an Aussie forum.

But... aren't you all deeply embarrassed that 88 thousand of your compatriots had nothing better to do on Thursday night than sit there watching blokes fumbling around on a gigantic field?

It's no wonder some of you get a bit tetchy.

I'd feel the same if 88 thousand English people showed up to the Gloucester Cheese Rolling Festival.

9 and 7 are never going to drop their 6 to 7:30 programming block. It’s the only thing keeping them relevant.

I suspect that is because of how OzTam select its people to survey. I'll bet few of them are younger than 30. I'd bet more and more people are switching off FTA TV for streaming services, especially the young. I mean seriously the 6pm News and show like A Current Affair are not the ratings draw cards the FTA channels would make you believe.

It's blindly obvious to everyone, except perhaps the NSW Government and Nick Politis, that the whole sport would benefit from South Sydney moving back to Allianz Stadium in 2024.

I can somewhat understand why it didn't happen this year - the 3-year agreement to play at Accor Stadium + the FIFA Women's World Cup has created some scheduling headaches - but it really needs to happen next year.

The way both the Roosters and the Rabbitohs talk about Allianz being "home ground" creates inevitable hype and anticipation for every game played at Moore Park.

The game day experience at Moore Park is significantly better than anything offered up at Olympic Park, from the pubs in Surry Hills and Paddington to the accessibility to the stadium (I caught the light rail from work to Allianz and then home with a bus change) to just about everything about the stadium itself.

In 2024, I'd like to see the Charity Shield game vs the Dragons switched from pre-season to R1 of the NRL draw, and this would be South Sydney's first home game at Allianz. It would be a great start to the new football season in Sydney.

Please don't get triggered

People always rave about the AFL atmospheres and they are the biggest myth. I've been to numerous AFL finals games and grand finals (not by choice) and have always been unimpressed by the atmosphere.

NRL grand finals and SOO at Suncorp absolutely shit all over them. It might be because of the more intimate venues and better noise containers, but live sport is more about the atmosphere than it is a pretty number.

So do A-League Grand Finals to be honest.

Game day experience is everything. A big crowd doesn't equate to an improved experience.

For instance, playing at Leichardt is on most footballers bucket list because it brings a very dense crowd that rides the game till the end.

It's always been my opinion that here in Australia, we think we understand what it means to be a supporter but having been to Europe to watch Rugby, EPL and ESL or the US to watch NFL and NHL, we are a long way off their level of intensity on game day.

I've also been to AFL grand finals and its just a large crowd with a small contingent of supporters that do anything and everything to get the adjacent crowd into the game.

As a kid, I used to watch the Cricket test matches and my fondest memories were being amongst the crowd giving it large to anyone on the boundary. I was encouraged to call Pat Symcox a wanker by some older kids, he turned around and said "yeah, I am a wanker, my teammates think so too but at least I know how to spin the ball on your shitty turf"

Next over he ripped two through the stumps and when he returned, he thanked the crowd for giving him the motivation.

100%. I went to all three A-League Grand Finals at Suncorp and they were pretty hectic.

Still the top three noises that I've heard at Suncorp involve Rugby League.
1- Ben Hunt try 2022 SOO G3
2- Darius Boyd intercept 2015 Prelim
3- Matty Bowen intercept 2005 SOO G1

Dead set thought the place would fall apart

How come no nsw highlights made that list ?

or knights defeating broncos at the opening of Suncorp

I wouldn't watch the Gay fl if they paid me,a pansys sport for poofs
I happen to be gay, and some of the dudes I've penetrated have been the most masculine and muscular blokes you could imagine (I go alright too, if I do say so myself).

I'll fix this for you. What you mean to say is: "I wouldn't watch fumbleball if they paid me. A messy sport for people that don't like structure"

Many NSW moments are quiet as a mouse. Knights bring about 300 fans to Broncos games - but the cholesterol of about 2,000!

You'd be correct. I doubt the people have changed in 20 years
