With Origin last night, there is no NRL tonight. However next week, it is going to be a busy Thursday night. Ashes cricket is back, plus the women's world cup kicks off with the Matildas playing.

The NRL could've been smart with it's Origin scheduling. They shouldve started the Origin series a week later and have Adelaide host the third game, because Adelaide Oval are not one of the venues in the women's world cup.

So in future, if there is a major event staged here in this country, the NRL needs to be smart with the draw and venues, and not treat it as a normal year.

Adelaide / Melbourne / Perth will never pay for a game 3 .. as it can't be a guaranteed decider

Three match series theres always a good chance 3rd game is a dead rubber. But as we saw last night it doesn't really matter. Crowds turned up, people watched on TV, no doubt corporates bought boxes. ARLC made a sht load of money. Whats the problem?

The last definitive figures we have:

average match rating across the season in 2015 was 27,000. Warriors were hitting 150k every now and then but averaged around 90k, and non warriors games rating poorly
So that`s about 4.5 million for the regular season games we can add to the NRL annual regular season total. In fact given that was in 2015 I`d say you could probably make that around 5.5m at least nowadays.

It’s funny how I’m rugby league unless a figure is known for sure it’s always the conservative estimates

Dead rubber or not, Origin is still a major event. A crowd of 75,000 turned up, who for the majority, supported a team that had already lost the series. Also Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne don't host Origin annually. You'll still have fans from interstate (NSW and Qld) book tickets and accommodation from months in advance anyway. Fans may take leave from work around that time too.

The third game or decider, doesn't have to always be in Sydney or Brisbane. Qld's eight in a row dominance began in 2006. They won the third game of that series.

It was held in Melbourne.

Origin is getting bigger each year

the decision to take one game to neutral states has and will lead to growth in afl state for rugby league

next stop a Auckland and maybe one day if the nrl is feeling really bold, Wembley stadium

origin will soon become must watch tv for all of Australia and then grow internationally

the difference between the two is why the ratings arent strictly comparable from previous years. VOZ is theoretically more accurate and removes things like double counting that were previously included.
Was it still the lowest rating game since 03 once bvod was included?

When you factor in all the media focus and discussion leading up its probably around 12 weeks of NRL club comp focus that origin takes away. I'm all for 3 consecutive weeks and getting it over and done with rather than it compromising nearly half the season.

Playing origin on consecutive weeks also maintains the focus and flow of the series

the arguments for the status quo are its how it’s been done since day dot and that with no club nrl rugby league fans will flock to afl

Attendances & TV ratings would suggest its having almost no impact on the NRL ....
to stop the comp for 3 weeks would be

suicide

I guess if you just started following the NRL this year you might think this. It’s well documented that NRL ratings and crowds suffer during origin. Also ratings have absolutely suffered this year, no doubt you’ll blame the cricket but I don’t see how you can say ratings have remained the same because we can’t know that.

Why is it suicide? Fans apparently will tune out of the game because of a 3 week rep period but not after the 6 months off after the season. It’s bizarre logic.

The 3 week rep period would have wall to wall media coverage drowning everything else out even more than it does now. The idea that it would open the door to other competitions is ludicrous.

the NRL knows this too.. its why it will never happen
This is just a dumb appeal to authority. So anything the NRL does is instantly correct just because?

"RL Fans will start following AFL if they have 3 weeks without club NRL on TV."
Has to be the dumbest argument ever! You'd have to be pretty insecure about the fans of our game to believe that for one second.

What might be of more concern to NRL is that PI players would rather play for Tonga or Samoa than Qlnd or NSW if it was a proper 3 week rep period.
