So sky nz are paying 32 million pa for a sport which doesn’t rate lol

They paid that to keep it out of the hands of a rival. Most non Warriors NRL games probably wouldn't be getting 50k on PTV., though streaming may be changing that.
Be interesting to find out what the FTA ones are getting this year.

The last definitive figures we have:

average match rating across the season in 2015 was 27,000. Warriors were hitting 150k every now and then but averaged around 90k, and non warriors games rating poorly

The grand final hit 140k, origin rated no higher than 113k. The ANZ test was the highest rating game in NZ at 272k.

140K for the GF , that didn't even kickoff over there til 9.30pm , finishing close to midnight & the Origins even later are very good numbers for a sport that according to kiwi toffball wankers is only popular in Sth Auckland

If New Zealand ever gets a second side, the NRL could ensure that the two sides play in regular slots so they get greater broadcast consistency. One of those slots should be the Friday 6pm game, which is 8pm in New Zealand. Every week in that slot the Warriors or New Zealand 2 should be one of the teams. Say roughly 8 Warriors home games, 8 NZ2 home games and the rest as a mixture of both teams playing away games. The other potential slot would be having Warriors/NZ2 as away teams in the Saturday evening slot. Again that 6pm game slot here is 8pm in NZ. That's how you start building more consistent audiences.

The thinking at the time with Sundays was to avoid competing with most Super Rugby games. But honestly, the NRL should just grow a pair and go head to head every week. Around two-thirds of the Friday 6pm matches should be in New Zealand if there's a second NZ side. You could add some more if Sydney clubs take some games there to other cities in NZ. Obviously, it also improves crowd averages too.

With Origin last night, there is no NRL tonight. However next week, it is going to be a busy Thursday night. Ashes cricket is back, plus the women's world cup kicks off with the Matildas playing.

The NRL could've been smart with it's Origin scheduling. They shouldve started the Origin series a week later and have Adelaide host the third game, because Adelaide Oval are not one of the venues in the women's world cup.

So in future, if there is a major event staged here in this country, the NRL needs to be smart with the draw and venues, and not treat it as a normal year.
