Yep. That’s why the heritage rule applies well. But they are not ‘Pacific Islanders’. They are Australians of pacific island heritage. I have no problems them choosing to play for their country of heritage. It’s great for the game and it’s seeing growth across Tonga, Samoa and Fiji as a result. Good problem to have.

As we expand more, more kids will come directly from the islands. Which limits these decisions needing to be made but for now, this is how it is

Outside of Victoria and a few wasteland states of Australia, that last sentence pretty much sums up AFLs place in world sport

The AFL seems remarkably happy to keep it that way. Half ass forays into NZ and China have been led by clubs, f**k all funding goes overseas to long established AFL leagues. Back in the day the AFL would invest in sending exhibition matches in the states, canada, the UK....but nah not any more and not for decades.

That said for all of its lack of world wide presence, Its not exactly shrinking at the moment, its revenues continue to grow every year, as does attendance, membership and sponsorships - even tv was up this year. There are some limited, if expensive options, for expansion within the borders of Aus.

And they still get more television money, what does that say about us?
It says we were media owned for a long time after the SL war creating a conflict of interest and it also says that we've traditionally been poorly run and don't leverage our advantages properly at the negotiating table

Said it a million times, it’s a completely different sport with its own set of pro’s and con’s, comparing the 2 codes is apples and oranges, I don’t care what anyone says AFL is bigger in Australia overall, fans are much more passionate and they have a much larger following in the NRL states than we do in the AFL states.

It has probably cost the AFL hundreds of millions to establish the east coast expansion clubs, gaining a foothold in RL territory hasn’t come cheap, are the NRL willing to spend that kind of money to gain a real following in the southern states? Do they have the money?
They don't have a larger following though as evidenced by the consistent TV ratings hammerings we give them

No and no, sadly.

BUT what of AFLX - surely this is the path to the Olympic Games!

Afl tried China and New Zealand and failed miserably at both

as someone else posted about aflx was an attempt to make their game more attractive to nsw and qld markets … again a massive failure

the suns and giants have been a massive failure as will tasmania

meanwhile the dolphins are one of the richest clubs in the land with 30k members after one year

and the nrl will soon announce png and Perth as the next two expansion teams whilst nz2 will round it out to 20 teams

this will give the nrl a footprint of 45 million people

league will be the dominant sport in the South Pacific

Honestly I think there is scope for a shorter/smaller variant of the game, but AFLX just wasnt it. Way too over the top and gimmicky.

Well before AFLX was launched or a thing, Id quietly proposed a variant of the rectangular version of AFL used in parts of the US (metrofooty) and Europe (Eurofooty) where they play anywhere from 9-14 a side on rectangular pitches. Modifying existing 9-a-side games to this format should have been simple, throw in some recently retired players, some up and comers and guys hoping to be drafted, and you could have had a handy little summer league - and a variant of the game that was easily transferable overseas. But no the AFL were ass clowns.

To that end, I think league Nines could be used in a similar fashion, give the league some more offseason content to sell, and some talent to look at for the following season.

China was driven by Port Adelaide and paid for by Ports chinese sponsor. The AFL went along for the ride, but made no real investments of its own.

New Zealand was driven by St Kilda and subsidised by Wellington Council. Again the AFLs investment was minimal. And even the league was like...."maybe in a few decades...maybe??"

as someone else posted about aflx was an attempt to make their game more attractive to nsw and qld markets … again a massive failure

AFLX was about developing a product for overseas and areas with less access to ovals. And very little to do with QLD and NSW.

the suns and giants have been a massive failure as will tasmania

Long term projects. The Swans took nearly 30 years to get off their knees, the AFL will persist with this. Tasmania will be ultimately successful, if not from day 1, but damned if they wont make it difficult to get moving.

meanwhile the dolphins are one of the richest clubs in the land with 30k members after one year

The AFL should have probably used Southport - which is one of the underwriters of the Suns - but other than Port Adelaide havent wanted to isolated supporters of other clubs from supporting them.

The Dolphins were proof that Brisbane - a hotbed of rugby league - has been massively underserved by the NRL since Superleague, and that not all rugby league supporters in Brisbane are Broncos fans by choice.

and the nrl will soon announce png and Perth as the next two expansion teams whilst nz2 will round it out to 20 teams

Maybe. Its the NRL after all.

this will give the nrl a footprint of 45 million people

Most of whom dont give a damn about sport. The same is true in "afl states".

The expansion paths for both sports each have their difficulties:
NRL
1. Perth appears obvious but has failed in both RL and RU in the past - I think it will be a drain on the NRL for years
2. PNG/Pasifika - plenty of fans but requires $20M + from the Commonwealth for years
3. NZ 2 - should be a winner
4. Brisbane 3/Sunshine Coast - also a winner

AFL
1. Perth 3 - a winner but probably dilutes the existing market
2. Adelaide 3 - ditto
3. Canberra - will eventually become the dominant part of GWS
4. Cairns +/- Townsville - spoken about by AFL but is there much support?
5. Newcastle - only if you want your supporters to be exposed to endless mockery

I think a problem is the size of rectangular fields.
Is 100-120 m x 50-80 m large enough for a high quality game?

Tassie are obviously going in and that should be seamless, Darwin might be team no20
