Surely the good state of the game and the success of the Dolphins pushes the NRL to bring the 18th team bids forward to bring the tv rights back onto the table
Not really, revenue for a ninth game wont increase until the next deal so why increase expenditure now? they've been pretty consistent saying they'll wait to see how Dolphins go.Surely the good state of the game and the success of the Dolphins pushes the NRL to bring the 18th team bids forward to bring the tv rights back onto the table

Unless the 18th license is going to Brisbane Tigers (unlikely) or the anywhere Bears, then its going to be a new club start up and you'd want at least a 2 year lead in time to build a brand new club.
No but youd want to have got full value for it before you did it or else its costing $20mill a year. Sure the incumbents may be willing to up current payment leve by that or more but I suspect theyd want an extension as part of the deal and we should not be entertaining that notion! So your saying if the NRL comes out tomorrow and says there will be an 18th team / 9th game in say 2026 that the NRL would give that 9th game content away for free until the end of the tv rights .....
They can pretty much do exactly that. Bringing in the 9th game just before the current deal expires gives a year or two of more proof for the NRL that the 18th team has a fan base and that a 9th game will increase overall viewership and subscriptions. That pays off for when the next auction happens. I have no doubt that if a 9th game was introduced early that the current rights holders would push for an extension or 9/Stan might try to freeze foxtel out of the next round early. Not saying they would get it though.Well have those discussions now with the providers. Tender in the background for 2026 9th game for the rest of the contract, no extension.
Nine and fox have already bought 12 of the 24 games a 9th game provides When they bought the 2023+ rights with dolphins added. If the NRL brings in a 9th game tomorrow, the next 4 years of rights for that game should be sold to Network 10 or 7.
Then when next negotiations come around you already know whats its worth.
For a team to be ready to go in 2026 or 2027 the call out for tenders should be in October this year with a decision made in early 2024.If the NRL brings in a 9th game tomorrow, the next 4 years of rights for that game should be sold to Network 10 or 7.

Doesn’t make sense for a new broadcaster to get it now they won’t have a game each week to showFor a team to be ready to go in 2026 or 2027 the call out for tenders should be in October this year with a decision made in early 2024.
At the moment they can only sell 12 games across the whole season unless they increase from 24 to 25 games a season per team for those particular seasons, in which case they can sell a 21 game yearly package. Or add a 19th team to create another 12 games. The 9th game can't be aired in timeslots that compete with 9 or Foxtel game slots due to non-compete clauses.
It's 12 games which other broadcasters won't be interested in. But increase the comp by one round you add another 9 games to that, which makes it 21 games over 27 rounds. I can see a broadcaster being interested in a Sunday or Monday night game for 21 weeks of the year. The NRL only have to extend the number of rounds for 1 season then change it back in the next deal. If I were betting man, I'd say we'll have 27 rounds even after an 18th team is added. The NRL is trying to maximise its season length appeal. The other thing is adding two teams makes a whole new slot with 24 games. The point is that the NRL has options.Doesn’t make sense for a new broadcaster to get it now they won’t have a game each week to show
More likely get an extra 20 million pa from nine and fox for 2 years with a new team starting 2025 and then go to marketIt's 12 games which other broadcasters won't be interested in. Most likely but remember if another broadcaster is serious about gaining the post 2028+ rights, having a weekly game for one or two years beforehand can build up their future audience. Particularly for a rival streaming service to Foxtel.More likely get an extra 20 million pa from nine and fox for 2 years with a new team starting 2025 and then go to market
Makes sense just to sell it to Stan exclusively as a tasterMost likely but remember if another broadcaster is serious about gaining the post 2028+ rights, having a weekly game for one or two years beforehand can build up their future audience. Particularly for a rival streaming service to Foxtel.
$20mill for 12 games a year? HahahahMore likely get an extra 20 million pa from nine and fox for 2 years with a new team starting 2025 and then go to market

They got 20 million pa from fox so the nrl could cover their running costsGWS and GCS was worth 50m a year to the AFL.
The Dolphins are bigger than both and the ratings for the Dolphins dwarf both.
20m a year extra is being conservative.
By the way you seem to be under the impression networks pay for expansion teams before they know what value they bring to the table....
NRL was not paid for Dolphins, that comes next broadcasts deal.
