I just want to specify that the main point i'm making is that you simply can't compare storm ratings to the lions and swans as there are huge differences. As I said traditionally storm games weren't shown on FTA whereas lions and swans games were, this makes storm fans far more likely to subscribe to fox. Further NRL viewership figures in general skew heavily towards fox/kayo. If you only look at FTA viewership the AFL wipes the floor with the NRL every game but that doesn't make sense just as it doesn't make sense to only compare FTA when comparing the storm to the lions and swans.

Without a regional breakdown of fox/kayo data it's impossible to make anything close to an accurate comparison. I will say that the storm are one of the highest rating teams in the NRL, is the same true of the lions and swans?
The reason I`ve read that Storm rate so well on those services is because they have long been considered a second Queenland therefore attract a lot of Queensland viewers. The viewers they get from Victoria are an added bonus hence their high PTV figures.
I don't see this as a reasonable suggestion and it should be pretty easy to test out. If this were the case storm games vs non Sydney teams should rate higher than QLD teams as QLD viewers are more likely to already be tuning in.
Bsaically, in that case why weren`t that 64 000 who tuned in last night watching on "those services". You can`t have it both ways. When numbers are poor they`re watching on Fox, on a good night they`re not, they`re watching FTA. I would say those viewers last night were largely unique Melburnian viewers that we need to be getting every week.
I'm not having it both ways. Not every person wants or can afford to have fox/kayo. Just because the storm skew towards fox/kayo doesn't mean that any person with a passing interest in league are subscribed to fox/kayo.

I never said the NRL shouldn't be trying to get those viewers every week, we have long neglected the Melbourne market and should have been doing more.
Can`t speak for the Loins but from what I`ve seen swans are mostly on Seven`s secondary channel in Sydney just like I believe the Storm are in Melbourne. Yet the swans average about 30k, Storm considerably less.
I said historically not last week. For most of the storms life you either had foxtel or you didn't watch the storm in Victoria. If you were a lions or swans fans you could watch them every week on FTA. That surely pushed storm fans to be more likely to be subscribers.

This all makes sense. As a Tasmanian nrl follower I’ve only ever watched Fox for the simple reason of access. To watch league I had to get Fox. As for fta ratings. The fumblers usually win Fridays. We usually win Sundays. We only compete on Saturday’s for the last 4 weeks of the season which is ridiculous. On fox it’s almost all our way.

Won't those local team FTA games be reduced when the new deal takes effect?
No, the deal is practically the same in terms of fta covg.

'From 2025, Seven will show at least three games per week on free-to-air channels, while Foxtel and its streaming arm Kayo Sports will broadcast all nine AFL and AFLW matches a round under the new agreement.
All AFL finals will be on free-to-air TV, while Seven will also show all 15 Thursday night games.
Foxtel and Kayo will have exclusive rights to Saturday games for the first eight rounds of the seven seasons.'

There’s something about reduced coverage in home markets

Dug this article from 2020, worth a read and interested in people`s comments.

From the article:

"That the Storm are a top rating team in the centre of the AFL universe is an eye-opener to the way the game has changed in the last twenty years and it’s worth a closer look.

Regional ratings breakdown (1)

A Storm game doesn’t have a huge impact on ratings in Sydney but does add 25,000 FTA viewers and 17,000 PTV viewers from Victoria and another 10,000 viewers in Brisbane (4k FTA, 6.5k PTV). It’s likely that this impact is understated, given how rarely the NRL rates at all in Melbourne. While these numbers sound small in the grand scheme, assuming that those figures generally hold across all games, the Storm would go from having the second highest average on PTV to twelfth, and from second to fourth on FTA without their local audience.

Relative impact of the Storm on regional ratings (1)

This really puts paid to the idea that teams from Sydney and Brisbane can have any meaningful appeal in the southern states without expansion. To truly engage Perth, Adelaide and other places in any form will require teams in those cities. It is simply not enough for Sydney clubs to move the occasional lack lustre game and hope that simple repetition engages with a wider non-traditional market. If those places are to care even a little bit, they need their own teams.

In Brisbane, a small rise in FTA and a 15% jump in PTV ratings strongly suggests that the Storm are serving as a surrogate fourth Queensland team thanks to the well-documented exploits of the future Immortals that played in purple and in maroon."

My take on this was that the Storm aren`t adding a lot of viewers out of Victoria on either on FTA or PTV, about 42 000 back then, but what they are adding when added to that fact they are a successful team who people want to watch (high rating anyway) and given timeslots that boost their viewing numbers this led them to be the second highest rating team over that period in the NRL.
It would certainly be interesting to know how much they have grown those numbers over subsequent years.

Pretty much agree with that article. To attract a local audience you need a side to follow.

I've seen something to that effect. Can't remember the details.

If true, would the reduction be sufficient to put Fumble fans in Sydney in the same position as RL fans in Melbourne i.e. payment is required to regularly watch the local team on TV.

AFL's insistence on local team FTA coverage suggests a desire to turn casual observers into paying fans at the grounds rather than paying TV viewers. Meaning they have no interest in helping Fox sell more subscriptions. Which again begs the question why Fox are so keen to give AFL so much money.

It’s only for something like 8 rounds

Nrl tv deal next time better be good with the ratings and the extra content thrown in

most afl games on Fox are shared with seven (free to air) in the home market. Six nrl games a week are exclusive on fox

fox are paying nrl less and afl more than their worth

Getting back to normal ratings

it looks like nrl ratings were up this year and afl were down but they did an extra round so maybe that makes up for it

Where`d you get your NZ Sky numbers and surely one extra fumbleball round wasn`t enough to compensate for our domination in ratings or was it that close, normally we`d be miles further ahead than that.

These aren’t my tweet

one round of afl is 3 to 4 million viewers

So a fall of 3 percent on last year would still end up with a similar total to last year

it looks like ours rose
