How else do you measure it though?

The Warriors owners, sponsors etc need something to measure by, Nielsen data doesn't include reach breakdowns.

Nielson data does provide breakdowns - if you pay for it. Sky have announced reach before. Nielson use the same tech they do here for Oztam and elsewhere.

Do you know Neilsen even does Reach in their rating survey though?

yes they do.

According to Fifa, more than a million viewers tuned in to the Kiwis opening match. 39.2 per cent of New Zealanders tuned in across Sky TV and various free-to-air options for the opening 1-0 win over Norway, stating it is the highest TV audience for a football match in this country for more than 20 years.

An average audience of 623,201 watched NZ takle on Switzerland – the highest FIFA womens world cup audience, beating the opening game by 32%. Sky sport report a total audience reach of 1.86m – or 38% of the population

Simply the best

better than all the rest

I mean hes not wrong that the NRL probably lead, but given what we know about streaming ratings now, theres every possibility that AFL streaming ratings have been understated all season long by up to 40%.....

Oh wow

if that’s really true you should shut down the sports industry site for being so inaccurate

No. we were working off reported data. Its also worth noting that we were within a bees dick of the NRL announcement this year, and that Oztam had accused Foxtel of overstating its Kayo ratings....by up top 40%

I'd trust Foxtel, they'd have exact numbers

Abdo made reference to our total ratings recently anyway he would know what they are

what id like to see is if afl ratings fell this year which I suspect they did, even after the gather round added 4 million to their total

their ratings on fox and kayo were awful

Of course they do. Kayo knows all

This is the problem with assumptions. The data we're seeing from Oztam shows that the AFLs Kayo ratings are around 40% higher than previously thought.

Foxtel dont use exact numbers for ratings. From staff via dm on twitter

We take the total minutes provided by OzTAM , add the minutes measured in Kibana for Foxtel NOW/GO, as well as the internal minutes measured across Streamotion (Kayo/Binge) and divide it by the length of the program to get the total audience figures. Internal Linear TV numbers are never used. We use OzTAM for everything we can, and only add internal stuff into things that aren't there yet, which is just Streamotion.

Even adding in the streamotion numbers would realistically be undercounting because there's no co-viewing coefficient applied like OzTAM applies to it's audience data.

Seven’s AFL Finals reach a massive 4.9 million

The 2023 AFL Finals Series continues to kick goals on the Seven Network, with the Friday and Saturday night Preliminary Finals reaching a combined 4.9 million viewers nationally,

The massive numbers come ahead of Saturday’s unmissable 2023 AFL Grand Final at the MCG and the Brownlow Medal tonight – both live, free and exclusive on Seven.

And in 2023, Seven is making the 2023 AFL Grand Final and the Brownlow Medal available across the screens of Seven and all devices on 7plus, making both mass cultural moments more accessible than ever before for fans.

Saturday afternoon’s Preliminary Final between the Brisbane Lions and Carlton at The Gabba was watched by 1.4 million broadcast viewers nationally as the Lions broke Carlton hearts and roared into the 2023 AFL Grand Final.

The Lions’ 16 point victory over the Blues dominated its timeslot in all people, 25 to 54s and 16 to 39s.

The match was the #1 program of the week in all people and 25 to 54s and scored the biggest AFL national audience this year.

The average audience was up 172% on the 2023 regular season Saturday average audience and the game reached 3.33 million people nationally.

Brisbane’s audience soared 519% on the 2023 season to-date Saturday match average audience, Melbourne’s audience was up 181%, Sydney up 148%, Perth up 125% and Adelaide up 77%.

Friday night’s high-stakes clash between Collingwood and the GWS GIANTS scored an average of 1.36 million viewers. It was up 126% on the 2023 season to-date average Friday night average, up 400% in Sydney, up 155% in Brisbane, up 120% in Melbourne, up 106% in Perth and up 75% in Adelaide.

Seven was #1 in prime time on Friday night with a dominant 54.7% commercial audience share nationally in all people, 52.8% in 25 to 54s and 56.9% in 16 to 39s.

Seven’s coverage of Collingwood’s win over the GWS GIANTS at the MCG was #1 in its timeslot in total people, 25 to 54s and 16 to 39s and reached 3.48 million people.

Seven’s AFL Finals coverage captured 71% of the overall AFL broadcast TV audience across the two games, including 72% of all viewers in regional Australia.

Seven’s AFL coverage helped power Seven to a dominant weekly win across the week ending 17 September, with an unrivalled 44.5% commercial share across all people nationally – marking Seven’s 11th week in a row as the most-watched network.

Seven Network is #1 nationally and in the capital cities so far in the OzTAM 2023 survey year, and #1 nationally in 25 to 54s and 16 to 39s.

I think they want to avoid ever mentioning that NRL is the most watched sport because then they'd have to justify the TV deal that is so significantly below the AFL's (thanks to Vlandy's the News Corp plant) You can't paint a picture of the NRL's telwvision success while also ripping the sport off.

And is this cherry picked ch9 metro data only to create an even bigger false perception of disparity? Why not an article on the Broncos/Warriors game being the most watched prelim ever in either sport?

Why don't any journo's ever mention this?

Instead all we get is articles about how AFL is the national sport, the MCG, and fools like Laurie Daley talking out of their ass.

mostly because hes a twitter dude with no reputation or credibility?

Media and the tv industry in general - not limited to AFL or NRL media either - is still largely wed to the reporting of the overnight metro/stb data. First come, first served reporting based on the initial Oztam release for the day. Its not "news" if you wait for the later data with the regionals and bVOD attached - really the only value in the early release data is the city by city information - but for overall picture, your better off waiting until the voz release comes out around midday.

essentially

Daily - 8-9am - OZTAM overnights are emailed out, embargoed until 10am AEST. This includes 5 city metro, and stv preliminary reports, 7 and 28 day consolidated reports for the previous week/month in metro and stv
Daily - 12-1pm - VOZ releases including metro, regional and bvod, 7 and 28 day consolidated reports for the previous week/month..

Tuesday - RegTAM reports including regional WA/Tas data are released for the previous week (up until sunday)
Tuesday - Oztam BVOD reports for the previous week (up until Sunday)
