o There are 3 that we tried and failed to move on: Turner, MaxF, BMM
o MMolo has to have a big year with the young crew coming through..
o FMolo was on origin money and probably due for a decrease.
o Bird will be close to the end
o Hunt probably moves on
o Ramsey & Amone out
o Su'a and Suli may choose to leave..
o Mulheissen I dunno about what we do with him..
o Coric is on a knifes edge also in terms if he's going to make it

So thats 12 or 13, and there could be others we dont want to sign who's contracts are starting to finish up.

We just desperately need to get some respect back into the club in 2024 to get recruitment firing, and hopefully the current playing group get behind Flanno and want to stay put.. cause right now our only likely signings are some of our development players getting upgrades.

Supp players is the new term for the old "development" players. Rather than only being able to play from round 10 onwards, supplementary players can now play from round 1. Maximum of 6 players can be on this list. Train and trial players are a level below this, and get paid about $1200 a week whilst they train with the first grade squad. Used to not be able to play NRL at all but can now play from round 11 onwards.

I thought the RLPA agreement increased supp list to 10 not 6 or was that one of the things that was knocked on the head in negotiations.

If you are correct on 6 then if Ramsey is bumped back into that list you may find one of the others promoted to top 30. Muhl if we dont get another hooker ASAP?

I don't think the plan is to put Ramsey on any sort of playing contract, he'll technically just be an employee of the club over the next two seasons at least.

Yep Ramsey would be paid but not on a contract is my understanding, but if he ever did get back to playing, we would have to lose someone to fit him in.. which is obvious but I think helps to articulate it when convincing the NRL.

I'm hoping the NRL will resolve this quickly, they took was it 4 months+ last year and it destroyed any chance of us finding a replacement.. but there was no blowback on them (which is I assume what they were scared of), and I think everyone has sympathy for the situation now given its rolling into a second year.

Excuse my ignorance but why can't Saints simply employ Ramsey - not as a player? If and when he's healthy enough to play again why couldn't they give him a contract as a player at that future time? The poor guy's crook. We just want to pay him a living wage and we hope his health is eventually restored. Seems a lot of unnecessary dicking around IMO.

It is really around ensuring the integrity of the salary cap and stop potential rorting.
I know in this case it is not a rort but any precedent creates unintended consequences.

He has a top 30 contract in place which has some kind of relevance for our roster management. Cancelling that contract before it is completed and then paying him outside the cap could be rorted.
As a rostered player, he also has access to rights/support as part of that - so health cover/rehab etc could all be covered by insurances if he is maintained within a playing roster somewhere.

The additional complication is that medical retirement usually requires the player to obtain medical advice that he will never be able to play again, which is why clubs are allowed to cancel the contract. In this case we are actually allowing him the opportunity to return to the playing field. Under normal circumstances this would not be allowed. Therefore the club and the NRL and basically "breaking the rules" in order to put Cody in the best possible position. So it's a complicated legal precedent that's being created hence the need for care in documenting why it has / will be allowed in this circumstance.

Clubs don't cancel contracts when players are medically retired, they're just not counted in the Salary Cap, players get paid out either by club or insurance, the NRL has guidelines around medical retirement BUT look at all cases on an individual basis and make a decision based on whats best for the player/club/game and they "supposedly "make sure its not a rort, every policy the NRL has isn't a hard and fast rule, they can "break the rules" when required.
Dragons are trying to make sure that Cody get the best possible medical help, by keeping him on for another 2 years this will help him out and the NRL know this isnt a rort by us, they also know its very highly unlikely he will ever play first grade again, this is just looking after his welfare and mental health as well, hopefully we do something like the West Tigers did with Simon Dwyer and keep him on in some capacity if he can never play again..
