Again with the lies about the Sharks. The club was actually quite flush with cash at the time. They were 5th or 6th in the criteria stakes. That is very easy to look up, once again you haven’t bothered to investigate before posting.
So when did it turn to sht and you run up the tens of millions of Debt?

About 8-10 years after. Your point was you chose the teams you thought were broke at the time, which wasn’t the case with Cronulla.
If you were really choosing teams that were broke then Perth would have been on your list.

Don’t tell me the Perth based ignoramus who hates Cronulla got it wrong?

Fair enough, ironically sharks were one of the few clubs whose crowds went UP during SL!

Technically the Reds were owned by News ltd in 1997 and therefore were not broke if the owners had chosen to keep funding them. They were running at a significant loss due to circumstances outside their control.

Does anyone still think this could be achievable what with potential bids coming from Perth, NZ2, PNG, Brisbane3 for the 18th team and talk about expanding to a 20 team competition by the early 2030’s?

You’ve also got to factor in other possible bids from cities and regions like Adelaide, Melbourne2, NZ3, Darwin, Tasmania and another Queensland team be it the Sunshine Coast, cairns, central Queensland or Logan/Ipswich.

growing population centres could also be a key factor with south east Queensland and Melbourne and even Auckland expecting high population growth.

One of the key things is how much content is too much for TV? end of day NRL will only expand if $'s are there to do so, and most money comes from TV.

Each team costs $17mil plus plus so Tv increase has to match that and then some. If TV keeps paying and locations are financially viable and ARLC gets its sht together improving participation rates then sure, why not?

Good point.

another thing you have to factor in regarding population growth and TV ratings is how much of the projected population growth will be fuelled by overseas immigration and from what parts of the world.

I can’t see people from south east Asia and the Indian subcontinent boosting NRL tv ratings.

I posted something similar yesterday. If the PNG bid gets in then I could see 22 being a chance with one of Perth, NZ2 or Brisbane 3 missing out if it stays at 20. The team that misses out is team 21 then Adelaide, Melbourne 2, Sunshine Coast, CQ, Auckland 2, Christchurch/Wellington etc go for 22.

In saying that I could just as easily see the NRL stalling at 18 for another 10-20 years again.

I guess it all comes down to what @Perth Red said about money and tv ratings.

tv ratings and money will dictate the future makeup of the competition.

20 teams by the early 2030’s is achievable and probably the maximum number unless a conference system is introduced.

Reality is "whats a conference system cost"
Cost nothing really, a conference system will break up the clubs enough to enter more areas to play the game, but only create an extra ladder and solidify borders within the comp and can significantly improve and create derbys/rivalries weve seen the impact of the dolphins against bronx and titans, introducing that one team into SEQ has just ignited all three teams..
Imagine 2 more in NZ to derby with the warriors..
Png vs Cowboys, basically adding certain teams near other ones will improve the league..
Perth is the outliner.. but with its 2 mill pop it should have been around since 1998 anyways.. going back there is a no brainer..
The American sports use conferences, and their comps have a lot of teams involved, it would work for the nrl, and scheduling would be easier, we need to boost the player pool and add more teams for reserve graders to get more opportunities to hit top flight... we are seeing too many players go to ESL rather that boost the existing clubs depth here, PNG and another NZ Franchise will increase the player pool

Sharks we in financial trouble. Had a rescue package a few years before

They looked good on the criteria because it favoured the News Ltd money injections

Are we going to pretend the op didn't nominated a Japanese team called samurais as one of the 24?!

A Japan franchise over an Adelaide or Perth franchise is insanity.

The easiest path forward is Perth, Adelaide, Hobart by 2032.

You forgot about Elle's dad.
He put in a load of cash and was about to become our 'Uncle Nick'.
Alas his passion took over in the guise of a pair of scissors.
