It's a really poor tactic from Ponting. The bowlers need to be getting the batsman to drive and the field needs to be set for that. For the quicks, I'd have 2 slips, a gully or silly point, a man in the covers, deep mid wicket, a silly mid off for the occasional short ball, a mid on, a fine leg and a forward square leg.
