Since the Sydney test in 2018 he’s had 8 tests where he took 3 wickets or less. For our main strike bowler that’s poor.

Well sure, if you want to ignore the circumstances entirely.

f**k me. People gave Lyon 847 innings without a five for, and then pummel Starc when he goes 17 innings without one, through sandpapergate and two tests in the UAE...

The only tests he was outright poor in were the couple in the recent India series. He bowled fine in the UAE in conditions that hate fast bowlers and he shredded SA before Warner and Smith had their brain explosion. And after that, no one was good, so why single out Starc?

Maybe the lesson is to pick him for the right conditions? Then again they probably want the footmarks for Lyon.

I think he was poor for more than just two matches, though. You’re being generous. He was poor in Brisbane, he was poor for the second test in Sourh Africa before the incident.

Interestingly Peter Lalor just said that his info is Starc won’t play all the tests in England. If correct they must be looking for an accurate bowler for the northern tests.

And I reckon you an others are being overly harsh to the point of willful ignorance.

But Aussie sports fans love a scapegoat almost as much as an underdog

The thing cricket fans (and geniuss like Warne) never seem to understand is that guys like Starc will go through periods of being less effective. It happens to all high pace fast bowlers. They're much more susceptible to small issues with their action or their confidence. But it often also only takes a few wickets to get everything working again
Same thing happens to spin bowlers - though Warne probably disagrees

Until Lyon it definitely did.

Gary had a period of time where he was worse than Krezja and still first picked. But that's not a complaint per se, although SOK could definitely feel hard done by over that period.

Anyway, the test has quietly ended the meantime.

We can say whatever we like about the quality of the opposition but f**k it's nice to win well again

Was thinking more about Warne's career at times

Exactly you can always control how you play regardless of the opposition. We played well in these 2 tests and deserve to win by those margins

He wasn’t being scapegoated by me, it’s clear our batting has been worse & the reason we lost a lot of tests.

That doesn’t mean the bowlers shouldn’t face criticism too.
