I'll give Smith the NZ tour as opener. We've made a decision to back him I don't agree with making a change after 2 tests.

I'd have him skip the short format cricket and play shield in February. He has time for two first class matches before the 1st test in NZ. I think he is better served playing there.

Selectors won't do that as he will be considered for the T20 WC and there are x6 T20 matches to play between now and the test series in NZ.

Problem is, the bloke should have already skipped / rested a lot from white ball cricket last year to freshen up mentally .

Not only is he getting on, but being available and picked for everything aint for him at this stage of his career IMO

You are right plenty of players retire themselves from a format by this stage. Clarke did it at 29 (Though T20 was still in its infancy and he was about to get the test captaincy from Ponting). I assume he will do that himself once the T20 WC is over.

Other thing to consider is his drive. How long does he want to play test cricket for? Next Ashes?

Renshaw got rooted years ago...too slow for Test Cricket, according to Warnie and the like.

Disgracefully treated for a young Test player.

Now he's our professional subbie, while we fluff around to squeeze 2 all rounders into the eleven.

I can only assume Shane Watson is the pseudo coach.

He's the only player I'd consider but Smith deserves 12 months.

Change the date… so this terrible batting isn’t represented on Australia Day!

We really need true blue Ussie to get us out of this neck deep shit with some cameos from Carey and bowlers. Good for test cricket though to see Windies up like this!

He has earnt, and deserves another 12 months.....not opening though.

If we insist on shoehorning our 6 best bats into the side,(which I do not agree with), I would rather see Renshaw open, Smith at 3, and Marnus fired into the Sun.

Opening with Smith is like picking Kurt Gidley as captain off the bench.
